Robert Jon & The Wreck Ending UK tour in Southampton as the band fill The Brook full of Live Music with support from Laura Evans

Support from Laura Evans

Smack on 8 pm, guitarist Joe Coombs took to the stage, solo before being joined by hotly-tipped upcoming Laura Evans, a petite singer-songwriter from “The Welsh Valleys” as she put it. Doubling up on both acoustic and electric guitar, Laura showed how she kept herself busy during the lockdown, writing about breaking up “Fool”, the new single “Fire With Fire“, a cover of Chris Stapleton’s “Arkansas” and the title track from her forthcoming album, “State Of Mind”. Laura probably fits more into the Americana style, not being derogatory, what she and Joe did as a duo was superb, but people, if you’re paying good money in these difficult financial times, give the artists the respect of not chatting, shouting, clinking glasses…..one of my pet hates !!

We didn’t have to wait too long for the arrival on stage for one of this reviewers’/radio presenters’ flavours of the month Robert Jon And The Wreck to take the stage. Thanks to the generosity of the management, both the venue and the band, I had the privilege of sitting in on the soundcheck and what came across is what a friendly bunch of guys they are. This, the last night of their UK Tour, had not taken a toll on their togetherness and professionalism. Led by their talisman, Robert Jon Burrison (guitar/vocals), the band are Andrew (a dead ringer for Noah Hunt!) Espantman (drums), Steve Maggiora (just returned from touring with Toto) on keys, Warren (just married) Murrel on bass and Henry James Schneekluth (Henry James to us) on guitar. Why did this guy not get a mention at the recent Blues Musician Awards in Memphis? In general, but in particular, his slide work is worldly!

Okay, down to the show…..much has been posted about their performances on this tour already, I will just select poignant moments for me (I know, selfish!). After the opening “Devil”, we were treated to the wonderful “Do You Remember”, Rob’s pleading vocal style emotes goosebumps on the skin moments, as does “Oh Miss Carolina” (which at first I thought was “Home Is Carolina”, but what do I know !). Joe Coombs joined in for a jam on I can’t remember, but the memories flooded back to the good old days of a battle of the two guitarists, swapping solos……perfect! Rob called Laura on for the beautiful “Old Friend”, which made me think I’d like to see her in a band setting, no disrespect to Joe! “Shine A Light On Me Brother” closed the set, and the encore “Cold Night” was a perfect ending to a successful tour, Rob and friends, you have a huge following over here, come back soon and give us the tonic we need!
