Glenn Hughes performs Classic Deep Purple “Live” at the Manchester Academy 2 I was so excited and grateful to be at this show. Kicking off, supporting Glenn Hughes, Laurence Jones certainly did not disappoint tonight.
The multi blues award winner Laurence Jones smashed it with his blues-rock set. Blasting out some of his own from his albums including his latest Truth. and also covering some timeless classics. Particularly ‘All along the watchtower’ was a brilliant version and note perfect. Along with this, the 11 minute blues epic ‘Thunder in the sky’ showcased him as a guitar hero. Closing with ‘Fortunate son’ this band showed they are one to watch over and over.
For the past few years, Glenn Hughes has toured consistently in support of a steady stream of impressive solo albums; each of those tours has featured a Deep Purple song or two. On the current tour though Glenn has gone all out with the full setlist consisting entirely of Purple songs. Joining him in the band is Soren Andersen on guitar, Jesper Bo Hansen on the keyboard, and recent addition Ash Sheehan provides the drums.
A huge applauded welcome to Glenn and his band, opening with their powerful rendition of ‘Stormbringer’ certainly got the Manchester crowd going. Followed closely by ‘might just take your life’ and ‘Sail Away’. Smashing out extended classics with some crowd chat thrown in certainly made for a memorable gig and the crowd were joining in all the way through. More songs included ‘You keep on moving’, ‘Made in Europe’ and ‘You fool no one’ which includes a wicked drum solo by new boy Ash. Hughes smashed ‘Mistreated’ hitting the high notes just like he always has and Soren showcased his amazing guitar playing at the front…the crowd just loved this track singing along loudly. The well-known ‘Smoke on the water’ closed the setlist but all was not done as the band treated us to ‘Burn’ and ‘Highway Star’ to a thoroughly satisfied and happy crowd.
Laurence Jones set the live music bar high and Glenn Soared over it with a spectacular purple drenched show. The just over 2-hour show was one not to be forgotten….what a fab night!
