CD Review: Ole Frimer Band ~ Live at Blues Baltica

Ole Frimer Band

Ole Frimer Band
Live at Blues Baltica
LongLife Records

This is an album that does exactly what it says on the cover. A live album recorded at a blues festival in Eutin, Germany, Ole Firmer Band have produced a mighty fine album celebrating the blues with six tracks selected from the bands original repertoire. Completing the album are two arrangements Hob Wilson’s Black Cat Bone in which the keys augment the sound with a measured tempo and guitar that is controlled tight and sublime making you listen closely to this classic so often heard; and closing the album with Johnny Winter’s Hustled Down In Texas this is a track that leaves you energized with drumming that drives the music and again the guitar playing is meticulous there is a free-flowing energy that bends around the vocals and instrumentation; Ole Frimer Band play stylish blues throughout.
Their own compositions are a smorgasbord of styles and approaches of the blues, every track is true to the blues with a story to tell and music that punctuates the emotions, this is classic blues with a modern twist. Opening with If You Only Could Forgive Me the guitar sets the pace and tone and it is clearly going to be blues drenched with controlled and clean notes that ring out and engage with the listener.
In the slightly quirky up-tempo The Way You Move it is the keyboard interpretation that makes the track stand out. Then an obvious connection with Stevie Ray Vaughan on Introduced To the Blues a mid-tempo number that gets the figures clicking and showcases the six string skills of Ole. A four piece band with Ole Frimer guitar & vocals; Palle Hjorth keys and a rhythm section of Jesper Bylling on bass and drummer Claus Daugaard skillfully blend the instruments so that they paint an interesting tapestry of sound. The band may be new to UK Blues fans but he is a favourite in his home country Denmark, this album with the dialogue spoken in English has been recorded to reach a wider audience. Ole Frimer Band has delivered blues with an edge whilst being silky smooth on the ears; the clever instrumentation and changes in tempo make this an album to revisit and not gather dust on the shelf.
