The UKBlues Federation Announce their shortlist for the 2021 UKBlues Awards
The 2021 UKBlues Awards ceremony will take place on May 9th, hosted — once again – by blues legend Paul Jones.
As for this year’s shortlisted talent: newcomers to the scene, When Rivers Meet, have been nominated for 4 awards, whilst Catfish, Dom Martin, Elles Bailey, Connor Selby have each been nominated for three. It is also great to see more new names to these awards with Errol Linton picking up two award nominations for Artist of the Year and Album of the Year; also, Alice Armstrong and Emma Wilson picking up nominations in the Emerging Artists Category.
In light of the changed musical landscape over the last year, with very few gigs and festivals and a lot more online content, this year’s awards will reflect the changes.
Ashwyn Smyth (Founder & Chair of the UKBlues Federation) puts this year’s awards in context: “It does not need me to tell you that 2020 was a year like no other. However, as a Federation, we are determined that what people have done to support, promote and play the blues in this incredibly difficult time should not go unmarked.
“We have had to make a few changes to some of the categories and, in particular recognition of the originality and creativity people have shown, we have introduced two new categories: Most Inspirational Online Performance of the Year and Most Innovative Use of Virtual Media of the Year.
“We look forward to announcing the results of the 2021 UKBlues Awards at a dedicated event on Saturday 9th May 2021, more details of which will be released soon.”
Voting for this year’s awards is now open. You can find links to all of the finalists’ websites — also, to video footage for all the musicians — Here The Federation urges would-be voters to visit this page to get to know something about those finalists with whom they may not be familiar, or simply to refresh their memories, before casting their votes. The Federation also urge voters to acquaint themselves with the rules, which can be found at https://www.ukbluesawards.com/rules. Here is the Voting link
Sari Schorr Releases Her New, Self-shot Video for ‘Turn the Radio On’
New York Blues Rock singer/songwriter Sari Schorr has once again turned video-maker, creating a visually accomplished, brand-new video for her latest single ‘Turn on the Radio’. Taken from her outstanding album ‘Never Say Never’
Resilience is Sari’s middle name. She’s a creative artist adapting to life during the ongoing COVID pandemic, which has brought live performance and touting to a standstill. Before the pandemic kicked in 2020, Sari would’ve been setting out on her new headline tour ‘Live in Europe’, visiting most of Europe including several shows with Robin Trower. This would have been her most extensive tour to date. Hopefully, all these postponed dates will go ahead in the Autumn of ’21.
“Creating this visual representation of my music has been a monumental challenge, first and foremost because I’m not a filmmaker and have no professional equipment at my disposal. Furthermore, location options were limited due to the pandemic. And, learning my way around Final Cut Pro (software not for unadventurous) took a mix of naivety and grit. So, the craft of storytelling is presented through the lens of my iPhone rather than through stagecraft, but I hope the connection with the audience will be as rewarding and memorable.”
Marie Naffah has released the brand new single ‘Wasteland’, taken from her forthcoming EP out later this year.
‘Wasteland’ is an empowering upbeat anthem from the impressive soul singer, which celebrates not conforming to stereotypes.
Regarding the single Marie says, “I wanted the song to move in and out of two lands – The Wasteland and Wonderland. Wasteland – the home of self-doubt, apathy and vulnerability is articulated through the verses whilst Wonderland is a space of confidence, power and energy that pulsates through the chorus. After the year we’ve all had, I feel it is a song for people who seek to find their own version of Wonderland in 2021.”
‘Wasteland’ follows the release of the well-received singles ‘The Cage’ and ‘California’ last year. All the songs feature on the forthcoming EP
Start the New Year by Jumping Aboard Jessica Lynn’s ‘Getaway Car’
“’Getaway Car’ is one of my favourite tracks off my upcoming record,” says Jessica “It’s a fun, feel-good love song that will definitely uplift your spirits! Heading into 2021, I wanted to start the year off right with lots of good vibes and I’m so excited for this release!”
Starting with a well-baited, tasty guitar hook and harmonious vocals, ‘Getaway Car’ brims with positive energy, playing on the free-roaming driving that so infuses American dreams and culture. The imagery feels even more vivid in these grey, locked-down months the world has been experiencing. Jessica’s voice is full of infectious enthusiasm and joie de vivre. In a word, the feel of this song is exhilaration: in more words—love of life, love of open road freedom – and love of love.
‘Getaway Car’ is taken from Jessica’s new album, ‘Lone Rider’, out later this year, which she still hopes to bring live to the UK in May 2021 (COVID-control conditions permitting) on her ‘Lone Rider’ headline tour, having had to reschedule it from June 2020.
Getaway Car’ is now available to download & Stream from all digital platforms. – Single Smart Link: https://snd.click/getawaycar
To celebrate the release of their new album Wolffpack on 5th February, the band will be playing a free live concert stream with special guests at Tivoli Vredenburg at 7.30pm UK time. You can watch it live here
Talking about the song the band say; “You might not have guessed it, but 70’s disco music is our guilty pleasure. Songs like Da Ya Think I’m Sexy or any ABBA song never fail to fill us with an unstoppable urge to move along to the groove. The main melody for HALF OF YOUR LOVE was actually meant for another song (Homegrown) but we decided it was too beautiful to be tucked away somewhere in a blues song. It needed a bigger spotlight -and a disco ball of course. “Keep the best for yourself, I only need less than half of your love”… This might just become your guilty pleasure too!”

Cheap Trick – Zander, Nielsen, Petersson along with drummer Daxx Nielsen – are of course one of rock’s hardest working live acts, lighting it up at arenas, concert halls, and amphitheatres worldwide more than 150 nights each year. Alas, recent events have forced the band off the road for perhaps the longest hiatus of their storied history. Cheap Trick plan to return to the endless highway later as soon as they can, including North American and U.K. tour dates – for updates and pre-sale information, please visit www.cheaptrick.com/tour-dates.html.
“This band is held together by music,” says Robin Zander. “It’s the super glue that keeps us writing and putting records out. The reason we started the band in the first place was to tour and write songs and put records out. If all that went away, there would be no point then, would there?”

The Outlaw Orchestra Premiere their Video for Single ‘Send Some Whiskey Home’
Country rebels The Outlaw Orchestra ride again and premiere the brand-new video for their single ‘Send Some Whiskey Home’: a track that is rich in country rock and sweet slide guitar that demonstrates the boys flexing a more mature direction in songwriting and performance.
The song has come to serve as the band’s calling card for their country blues roots and their unrepentant tongue-in-cheek lyrics, affectionately homaging the women (and dogs) who allow them to maintain their musicians’ lifestyle. This is a heartfelt love song between man, dog and whiskey.
Taken from their recent, critically-acclaimed 10-track debut album ‘Pantomime Villains’,the single Released on 22nd January 2021.
