Troy Redfern singles out Sanctify a wonderful single to reinforce this great players’ deserved reputation and a great taster for his latest album.

We love Troy Redfern’s albums here on Bluesdoodles and your can look up our past thoughts via the search facility and don’t forget, he was also part of the phenomenal Redfern, Hutchinson and Ross release called Mahogany Drift which we also loved.

Anyway, this Herefordshire born multi-instrumentalist plays a stunning slide guitar and has a single of bluesy rocky loveliness that will entertain and amaze with his instinctive bottleneck playing. He effortlessly lets the slide glide and makes it talk.

This latest single, Sanctify, the third from his excellent The Fire Cosmic album, features the bass dexterity of Dave Marks and the thundering drums of Darby Todd and they combine to provide… well, imagine a Budgie blues bludgeoning of a John Lee Hooker riff; in fact, apart from the phased start to the (woefully short) slide solo, it has the same sense of adventure, drama and attack of the avian Welshmen’s version of Baby Please Don’t Go.
A very different song structure, true, but the exciting same but different paradoxes are a delight.
My advice: set this on repeat a few times and listen to the rhythm chord work, the slide accents, the bass line and metronomic drums and then listen again as a whole to grasp the clever and thoroughly enjoyable way Troy has, once again, come up with original, quality blues-rock that knocks seven bells out of some of the big names in the genre.

By the way, it was recorded in the legendary Rockfield Studios where many great rock bands have recorded some of their best work and as Troy says,

“it was important for me to capture the raw energy of three guys playing live in the same place, at the same time. That’s something that you just can’t get if you’re sending files from different locations. I chose Rockfield Studios because so much of the music I grew up listening to was recorded at this legendary studio.”

Bluesdoodles Rating: 4 Doodle Paws – a wonderful single to reinforce this great players’ deserved reputation and a great taster for his latest album.

THE NEW ALBUM “THE FIRE COSMIC”

(Even though this review is just for one track, iTunes still has its say…Troyce Key and JJ Malone combining on the blues finery of Annie Maybe.)
