What does Bluesdoodles think of Simon McBride’s guitar work? – Here is an extract: …Simon and the band delighted the crowd tonight with a stellar display of musicianship; there is no doubt that Simon is a superb guitarist and yes it is all too easy to compare him to fellow Irishman Rory Gallagher but for me Simon is his own guitarist with a modern twist he creates at times a sound redolent of sitar and Indian music and in the next beat heavy rock driven licks. He deftly melds and weaves a sound that is live energetic and his own… Read the rest hereHERE

A supremely talented acoustic roots and blues guitarist, singer and songwriter with a burgeoning global reputation Martin Harley’s recently released and widely acclaimed new album Live at Southern Ground was recorded in Nashville in collaboration with Daniel Kimbro (Jerry Douglas, Larkin Poe) on upright bass.

As Martin explains “Daniel and I met in Knoxville through a mutual friend… he handed me his card which read… ‘alright guitar player… good upright bass player’ … an understatement on both parts!”

A mixture of retrospective solo and duo arrangements recorded during an afternoon at the esteemed Southern Ground studio in Nashville, Live at Southern Ground features Martin on Weissenborn… a traditional Hawaiian acoustic guitar played across the lap, resonators and archtops, and of course Daniel Kimbro on upright bass, and in March 2016 they’ll be performing together in the UK for the first time.

In the US, Martin has headlined Music City Roots in Nashville and toured coast to coast with ZZ Ward, Delta Rae and opened for Iron and Wine, Bruce Hornsby, Five for Fighting, World Party, Beth Hart, Joe Bonamassa amongst many others.

Live at Southern Ground follows on from Martin’s five previously acclaimed albums, most recently Mojo Fix in 2012.

Temperance Movement Rocks up Dostoevsky’s White Bear

Temperance Movement White BearTemperance Movement Rocks up Dostoevsky’s White Bear

The Temperance Movement
White Bear
Earache Records – release Date 15th January 2016

Opening with Three Bulliets, with its catchy chorus drumming with intent the power of the music sweeps through the speaker creating a wall of sound that has layers of tones and patterns that hooks you in; and you want to hear much, much more. White Bear is a wild animal of an album from The Temperance Movement, Rock N Roll that turns up the volume and tempo. The album is titled after a quote from Dostoevsky’s Winter Notes on Summer Impressions: ‘Try to pose for yourself this task: not to think of a polar bear, and you will see that the cursed thing will come to mind every minute.’ Temperance Movement are not cursed – the music is innovative and builds strong shapes distorting dimensions so that the notes from guitar and drums swirl and capture the power and message of lyrical driven tracks. This is a five piece that uses every note available building crescendo’s and shading the quiet so you are beguiled, entranced, delighted and moved to dance in equal measure. The band based in London and Glasgow combine a pedigree of experiences in the world of music distilling, re-blending into the movement sound. The vocals of Phil Campbell are central, influential in how each song has its own tempo and feel. Around the front-man bassist Nick Fyffe sets the groove and the rest of the rhythmic movement is provided by drumming that stands-out on every track from Damon Wilson. Into this charismatic mix comes the twin guitar power of Paul Sayer and Luke Potashnick, who since recording the album has left The Temperance Movement, in future the second guitar will be delivered by Matt White.

The guitars open and the sonic picture is created and A Pleasant Place I Feel creating the equivalent of a Rock n’ Roll musical hug. The guitar playing is such that you want the place to exist and never disappear. This is no gentle folky track it is progressive Rock n’ Roll that groans and rolls around the lyrics exciting music once again from The Temperance Movement. The tonal picture changes swampy, raw roots rock sound of Modern Massacre embeds itself and is a delightful earworm the drumming rhythmic digging deep into the collective American memory with a Native American feel, this is arena drama at any live show. The title track, White Bear is full of clashing symbols that fade away to a delicate, almost fragile delivery of the lyrics this is a beautiful track with the whole band kicking in and the tempo is on fire, this is a bear dancing with delight. The juxtaposition of quieter and rockier movements makes this the heart and soul of the album. Followed by Oh Lorraine fast, blues with added potion of funk of the future modern and this will have the crowds waving and cheering as the tempo kicks in and Oh Lorraine will be sung back whenever played live. The closing track I hope I’m Not Losing My Mind is quieter, the tempo is slower the ballad book has been opened. The track has an ethereal, out of this world feel as if the mind is being lost. The lyrics are sharp and deep and closes this album full of thought so that you can reflect back on White Bear that is full of every colour of the spectrum and will excite every time you listen to Temperance Movement’s White Bear.

There is a cohesive feel about the album, as if the music flowed out in one session. In fact that is anything but the truth, this is an album that has travelled in its creation as it moved from Rockfield to Fish Factory and then on to Abbey Road. White Bear is a huge album that will be the talk of the town when released on 15th January 2016. Sit back enjoy the musical journey of The White Bear and above all listen to the lyrics, they are meaningful, relevant and fitting for the world we are embarking on through 2016.

Martin Harley ~ On Tour in UK 2015

Martin Harley and Daniel Kimbro - 'Live at Southern Ground' - cover (300dpi)MARTIN HARLEY AND DANIEL KIMBRO

With the wonderful album LIVE AT SOUTHERN GROUND Out now on CD, Vinyl & DL Read what Bluesdoodles said HERE this is just a snippet – “The whole album is as perfect as a sun ripened peach full of juicy musical snippets and lyrics that keep the music rooted in the blues”

Martin Harley is a supremely talented acoustic roots and blues guitarist, singer and songwriter with a burgeoning global reputation.

Live at Southern Ground, his eagerly anticipated new album, was recorded in Nashville in collaboration with Daniel Kimbro (Jerry Douglas, Larkin Poe) on upright bass.

As Martin explains “I wanted to make something representative of where I’m at musically at the moment with an album that reflects on the last year solo and duo touring. Daniel and I met in Knoxville through a mutual friend… he handed me his card which read… ‘alright guitar player… good upright bass player’ … an understatement on both parts!”

A mixture of retrospective solo and duo arrangements recorded during an afternoon at the esteemed Southern Ground studio in Nashville, Live at Southern Ground features Martin on Weissenborn… a traditional Hawaiian acoustic guitar played across the lap, resonators and archtops, and of course Daniel Kimbro on upright bass.

“It’s a simple, honest and direct album with no overdubs in a warm sounding room with some great microphones and two new friends playing a few songs over a cold beer or two” says Martin. “There’s a great feeling when you click with someone. It frees you up to experiment with the arrangement and the dynamic of a song.”

Live at Southern Ground follows on from Martin’s five previously acclaimed albums, most recently Mojo Fix in 2012. Along with many years of international touring and countless festivals Martin has built a strong international fan-base across the globe.

Renowned for his prowess as a slide guitarist, Martin is almost unique in the UK in his playing lap slide. During year-round worldwide touring he’s absorbed a plethora of diverse influences, honing his craft into the classic songwriting style he possesses today.

Steve Hackett ~ Live at Colston Hall October 2015

Steve Hackett - Colston Hall - Oct 2015_0239lSteve Hackett
Acolyte to Wolflight with Genesis Revisited Tour
Colston Hall, Bristol
28th October 2015

Steve Hackett - Colston Hall - Oct 2015_0012lTonight it is Bristol on the final leg of Steve Hackett’s latest tour, who are treated to an evening of Prog Rock in two halves, the first set a celebration of the solo career of Steve Hackett from his first solo album Voyage of The Acolyte to his latest release Wolflight and then after a short break over an hour of celebration of Genesis with the delight of hearing live tracks previously unheard.

Steve Hackett - Colston Hall - Oct 2015_0042bwlTaking us back to the early days of post Genesis, the title track from his third solo album Spectral Mornings, gets the show on the road as Colston Hall was surrounded by layers of sound that would continue throughout the show. Tonight’s touring band with Steve fitted the music being explored creating textured layers of music from instruments whose chords and notes intermingled in to a musical tapestry tonight with bassist, Roine Stolt , Gary O’Toole the bowler hatted drummer, on keys Roger King, and then multi-instrumentalist Rob Townsend adding flute, saxophone and additional vocals on some of the songs provided by Nad Sylvan with his golden voice.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

By the third track we were up to the present day with Woflight the title track of Steve Hackett’s latest offering, the guitar was sublime, elegant and at times hard-hitting. The whole band had a feel of a very contemporary orchestra this is electric music with a classical feel progressive and organic. Filling the hall with colourful shapes and layers of sound creating a complex tonal shape that was stylish and flowed with the musical story. Steve’s piercing guitar combined with haunting wind instruments and drums that form the beats that resonate across the hall. This is progressive music where you sit back and immersed deep in the zone of sound being created as the lyrics unfold taking you deep into exploration of the world while the music paints the emotional picture.
A change of tempo as Steve discarded electric for a twelve string acoustic taken to a special moment he experienced whilst on holiday in Mexico, Loving Sea captures those rare perfect moments preserving in the music the magic of memory. This was no folksy, rootsy acoustic it was progressive with percussion and penny whistle all painting a tonal backdrop for the lyrics as the tale unfolded. The next number, this time with a six string, from Defector album is Jaccuzzi with his brother John joining him on haunting and distinctive flute as we are once again exploring a musical wonderland.
What a wonderful hour and half of music with harmonies that floated, at then pinned down the lyrics as with the vocals from Nad on Icarus Ascending and Star of Sirius based on tarot and creating a wall of sound that was full of mysticism.

Steve Hackett - Colston Hall - Oct 2015_0125lA short break and then Genesis re-visited with fans ecstatic with joy as the set rolled through tracks that for many were personal favourites, reminding us of what a ground breaking prog rock band they were in the early days of the 1970’s. Every track was distinctive with a light show that augmented the complexity of sound and the journey the music and lyrics were exploring not always in a continuum but through a musical maze of exciting chord changes. Nad’s vocals soared above the clever instrumentation and arrangements capturing and distilling the essence of Genesis. Opening with Get ‘Em Out By Friday the trio of voices took on characters in a rendition that created a stage driven Prog Opera as Nad, Gary and Steve all played a vocal part. The poignancy of the set was augmented with a mention of the creepiness of Colston Hall downstairs with its history of holding slaves below harking back to the darker side of Bristol’s history. The inclusion of The Cinema Show was also fitting as the hall was a cinema in its checkered history, with stylish bass and guitar from Ronnie Stolt with his double-headed custom-built monster. The biggest cheer of the night was Steve Hackett on acoustic as he moved from some classic Spanish guitar sound into the opening bar of last track from Foxtrot album, Can-Utility and the Coastliners what a sound from the stage and around the hall.
The encore was sublime we all wanted more Prog Rock courtesy of Steve Hackett and his band of musicians but as the clocks ticked we knew time was running out in Bristol tonight.

Tonight was pure Prog rock in the moment and full of nostalgia that delighted both Genesis fans and those who like me are firmly in the camp of Steve Hackett’s post Genesis career that has that very special prog rock musical magic.

About The Album and Track Listing

It would be easy to call Shockwave Supernova a “masterpiece” or “the last word on guitar” from the world’s most commercially successful solo guitar performer. Satch, however, sees it much more personally. He has consistently advanced the artistry of the instrument; an effort he dedicated himself to on 18th September, 1970, the day his idol Jimi Hendrix died.
