2017 Genesis Revisited with Classic Hackett TourIt’s 40 years since Hackett recorded his last studio album with prog giants Genesis before leaving the band to embark on his highly successful solo career.  That album was Wind and Wuthering. Now Steve and his incredible band celebrate this classic work’s 40th anniversary by treating audiences to thrilling renditions of tracks from the album.

The show features more Genesis gems, including fan favourites such as ‘The Musical Box’, as well as Genesis tracks ‘Inside & Out’ (released on an EP shortly after Wind & Wuthering) and ‘One for the Vine’ which have never been performed by Steve and his band until now.

Steve’s brilliance, of course, is not limited to his years with Genesis and the show will include plenty of ‘Classic Hackett’ from his remarkable solo catalogue, including popular hits such as  ‘The Steppes’, ‘Serpentine’, ‘Every Day’ and the first ever live performance of ‘Rise Again’ from his 1999 album Darktown.

I’m thrilled to bring my latest show of Genesis and Hackett numbers to the UK, adding additional numbers such as One for the Vine and celebrating the 40th anniversary of Wind and Wuthering, one of my favourite Genesis albums and popular with Genesis fans the world over…Steve Hackett

But Steve isn’t the only one excited by this latest live offering… the American leg of the “Genesis Revisited with Classic Hackett” tour has received consistently excellent reviews from media across the USA:

All in all, an evening of flawlessly performed music played to a very appreciative audience of prog fans who rarely get to see this genre of music played live in this day and age as well as it was this evening. Elmore Magazine

Steve Hackett was masterful in revisiting Genesis, unfurling solo gems in Grand Rapids. Local Spins Magazine

Hackett’s soaring guitar work still sounded as vibrant that evening as it did nearly 50 years ago when he first joined Genesis.  With a calm and almost stoic demeanour that contrasted him from the more flamboyant axe masters, Hackett showed a dexterity and versatility in his performances, from strumming Latin-style acoustic to tapping on the electric numbers. Ultimate Classic Rock

Flood & Burn Stylish New Recording By Sean Taylor

Flood & Burn Stylish New Recording By Sean TaylorFlood & Burn
Stylish New Recording By Sean Taylor

A beautifully crafted album before a note of music played Flood and Bur states it is quality as the pleasure of exploring the cover. With its insightful and thoughtful haiku

A thumbprint of moon – Impressed into a corner – Of cold turquoise sky

Sean Taylor the master of modern folk is a talented singer/songwriter. Flood & Burn is no different. The folk vibe reaches across the Atlantic and adds a touch of Country, punch of Blues and creamy swirl of Jazz. This is the history of roots music pulling together cultures and melding the new tone to create the sound that reflects the now in a journey that music has culturally undertaken back through the mists of time. Music is a river of sand picking up tones and colour from every pebble it flows over.

Opening with Codeine Dreams, we are floating on a cushion of Joe Morales Saxophone, the song holds you transfixed in its mellow haunting and at the same time the disturbing beauty of dreams. From the first track the album is full of confidence and by the time the last notes fade it is no wonder that Sean Taylor says “Flood & Burn may be the best thing I have ever done,” We definitely have no argument with that statement. The tempo changes and the sound filling out with Troubadour and special guest Leonard Cohen’s band leader Roscoe Beck’s Double Bass. We are wandering with a troubadour of many songs and tunes with its country vibe and winding roads we have no idea what is around the corner a foot tapping number. Following this is Run To The Water which is full of blues hues making the water shimmer and a place you would definitely want to run to. Sean’s vocals throughout have a distinctive cadence, rough, and travel wearied with more than a hint of Tom Waits in lyrics and delivery.  Sean is a singer-songwriter that explores each word and placing it carefully within the lyrical tale unfolding.  As we pass the half-way mark on a musical and emotional journey no one wants to rush the album is definitely one to sit back and savour as we have the title song with its percussive guitar reflecting Sean’s vocal tones.

Back with country blues we have A Bad Case Of The Blues as Waits meets Townes Van Zandt. Hana Pirhana’s violin adds a bittersweet tone, with the hints of Eastern European folk music running through as Sean’s vocals pick up the sadness.

The penultimate track is the only cover that Sean has slipped in as a personal favourite, Heartbreak Hotel, featuring Eliza Gilkyson on backing vocals and slide from Andre Moran. Closing out with Better Man, written by Danny Thompson full of the power and majesty of his chosen instrument the double bass that squeaks, hums and vibrates behind Sean Taylor’s vocals. The perfect ending to an album whose chords and lyrics linger as the speakers fall silent.  Flood and Burn – an album with different styles and tempos ensuring the listener’s interest is maintained from the first to the last note with his stunning guitar playing. Sum up the album – The guitar sings and the vocals growl simply intoxicating!

Listen then check out the dates and catch The Answer live.

Unlike the traditional sound of The Answer, ‘In This Land’ has a more contemporary stripped-down folk sound utilising acoustic guitars, mandolins and layered harmonies. It sees the band rediscover their roots and is a paean to the greats of their Northern Irish culture referencing influences such as Van Morrison, Alex Higgins and Rory Gallagher. To coincide with the strong links to home, the track will be released on March 17th – St Patrick’s day.
Says singer Cormac Neeson, “The song is about growing up in Northern Ireland and the sense of cultural identity that such an upbringing spawns. It’s a very colourful and wonderful place, at times contradictory, at times tragic but always unique and oh so memorable. It’s something we’re all very proud of; our little land has been responsible for its fair share of heroes, criminals and stars!”
The single taken from their latest album Solas, which came out late last year and received rave reviews. Team Rock referred to the album as “…an unmistakable, quantum leap forward.  Bluesdoodles loved the album who we reviewed last year check out what we said HERE

Matt Andersen Touring Summer 2017

Matt Andersen, acclaimed, multi award-winning artist; including winning Best Solo Performer at the Memphis Blues Challenge, it appears that the entire world is now discovering Matt Andersen. His vocals, as well as guitar playing, captures attention with three consecutive Maple Blues Award for Male Vocalist of the Year.

A powerhouse performer with a giant soul-filled voice and commanding stage presence, Matt has built a formidable following, the old-fashioned way – touring worldwide and letting the converted audiences and Andersen devotees spread his reputation through word of mouth.

Matt Anderson;s current album Honest Man recorded in New York and produced by Commissioner Gordon (Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse, KRSOne), Honest Man follows up the JUNO Award nominated Weightless and sees the songwriter pushing himself into new territory. Blessed with a rich gospel soul voice and armed with a new set of songs, Matt Andersen found a perfect partner in crime with Commissioner Gordon.

The ten songs that make up Honest Man explore both the political and the personal. The title track, co-written with Chris Kirby, was inspired by a US political cartoon while “Let’s Get Back”, co-penned with Andy Stochansky, has Andersen thinking about how his country as a nation has changed, but not for the better. “Who Are You Listening To?” was hatched with Ryan Hupman during a pre-election social media flood and emerges as a rally call for people to make up their own minds and not be swung by the ‘information’ we’re being fed.

Now is your opportunity to hear Matt Anderson live across UK and Europe.

Due to a recent vocal cord condition with lead singer and guitarist Alan Nimmo, the majority of King King’s November 2016 UK tour dates with special guests Broken Witt Rebels, have been re-scheduled to January, February, March and May 2017. The news follows the release of the band’s first ever live album ‘King King Live’ that went to #1 in Amazon’s Best Sellers Blues Rock Chart, and the upcoming release of their radio remix of their new single ‘Waking Up’.

Says King King’s frontman, Alan Nimmo, “I’ve seen my ENT specialist. He put a camera down my throat to look at what condition my vocal cords were in. Unfortunately, there’s still a good bit of inflammation and redness. I’ve been working with a vocal coach to build strength and stamina to aid my recovery.
“We will be re-scheduling most of the dates on the UK tour to January, February and March, however, we will commit to the remaining four shows on the November UK tour, beginning at Edinburgh’s Queen’s Hall (25 November), continuing through to the Live Rooms in Chester (26 November), The Grand Venue in Clitheroe (27 November) and wrapping up in London at Islington Assembly Hall (29 November).”

In the last six months, the buzz around self-released, Birmingham blues rock band Broken Witt Rebels has reached a deafening roar. So much so that the band have rushed out their latest single, Guns, to capitalize on fan-driven interest. The official video for Guns has generated almost 400,000 views on YouTube in less than 48 hours.

Chosen by the fans, Guns is now the second single to be taken from the band’s <strong>Georgia Pine EP. Produced by Tom Gittins (Robert Plant), the previous single, Low, was a featured track of the week on Radio X, and play-listed on Planet Rock, who are currently playing Guns.

GUNS pays homage to their hometown of Birmingham with a melody and energy that tears through you, with the refrain. “Born and raised where Guns are made, they burn bright like a cigarette.”

The Birmingham four-piece is comprised of James Tranter (guitar), Danny Core (vocals), Luke Davis (bass) and James Dudley (drums). Their bluesy southern swagger has drawn favourable comparisons with Kings of Leon, Alabama Shakes and The Black Keys.

Not A Wicked Day for Rock with Echotape Album

Not A Wicked Day for Rock with Echotape Album Not A Wicked Day for Rock with Echotape Album

There is a wicked sound on their latest album Wicked Day from Echotape a young indie rock band who want you to enjoy the music you hear. Their sense  fun and adventure is heard across the eleven songs reflecting this is a band that will travel to be heard with the band performing from Hollywood to Holyhead, Moscow to Madrid. Having featured in London’s Tate Gallery, they have naked stage invasions in Dublin, and jam onstage with Carl Barat. This approach has ensured Echotape have got the attention with their DIY approach gaining a Sky News’ report and interview, followed by a BBC Introducing South session and festival dates.  Touring is in their music DNA and now a new album Wicked Ways to promote; thus, Echotape are set to head out on their UK tour this October. To coincide with the tour, the band have also announced that they’ll be releasing a new single and video ‘Friend Like Me’ the third track on the album on October 17th. Lead singer Marc Burford comments “I always look forward to playing ‘Friend Like me’ in the set as it always gets people singing and dancing around, it also carries a positive message that friends should stick together no matter how hard things get

Friend Like Me continues the style of the opening two numbers, upbeat with the smoky southern rock feel, sunshine and good time anthems,  retro with a twist. The twist is indie-rock they are not clones of what has gone before and have a distinctive British feel.  Yes, it starts slower but the pace picks up and the rocking sunny sound continues, a catchy number that will be a single that will get the listener taking notice of Echotape! With radio play, Echotape will have lots of Friends Like Me!

Then there is a change of vibe, with Grams, the sound is full with Marc Burford’s lead vocals delivering the lyrics with a feel-good passion that combines with the instrumentation so that this is a song that makes you smile. The trumpet pierces through adding a sharpness to a distinctly British theme and the chorus we will all sing along feeling alive with Echotape.

The album rings in the changes with a quieter acoustic guitar led number I Got You, this is still upbeat as the tempo is picked up by keys that stretch out the chords, the drum picks up a harmonious marching beat with an electro-folk feel that is attention grabbing foot-stamping glory.   The acoustic is returned to with Little White Lies, allowing the acerbic lyrics to catch at the back of your consciousness. This is a song that worms its way into the listener creeping up and before you know it becomes a favourite of the album, as Marc has centre stage the rest of the band harmonises with synchronised gentle clapping. A clever track so much more depth than vocal and guitar.

Other tracks that have clapping, which can be an irritant but not this time is We’ve Been Dreaming with its mid-tempo feel this is not sunshine anthem more thoughtful, proactive as is Soul. They have snatched at the opportunity to colour the album with different tonal shapes and sounds; the beats, chords and arrangements have been carefully mixed and formed into a palette of attention-grabbing sounds, nothing dominates the vocals lead with instrumentation that acts as the perfect soundscape to give the band a depth of harmonies that spring and curl to catch your attention.

Closing with the title track, the guitar sways with the motion of waves crashing a sound-picture is being formed quietly as Marc incants the lyrics that connect back through the album. Once again, difference is achieved by the addition of harmonica. Echotape refuse to be confined and have delivered feel-good indie rock that pleases and will brighten every moment one of their tracks turns up on a play list.

Echotape’s, Wicked Way is rock that says we can be thoughtful we can play with harmonisation. Throughout the album, there were flickers of bands that have defied being in a box, The Answer, and often with the Celtic feel within the tempo bands such as Runrig.

One thing for certain this is a band with an exciting musical road to explore if Wicked Ways is an example of a pitstop in 2016.

Feeling Exhilarated at last a King King Live Album. We have waited, was it worth the wait… Yes, It was and we can shout across the land at last we can have on tap that Live magic that is King King.

Live, has captured everything a King King gig has to offer. We have the Alan Nimmo wit and the crowd’s warm heartfelt appreciation with ovations and cheers and then the silence of a mass of people listening intently. Recorded on the 14th May 2016 at Glasgow O2 ABC, in front of a home crowd with that added energy of a homecoming for Alan.

King King always exhilarates, they are a unit of musicians who build on each other’s emotional energy making as Aristotle said “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts!”

Opening the twelve track album with Lose Control, which is a certainty with King King’s music; this is a jump up and down number that will raise the temperature at any venue. Glasgow is on fine form as Alan thanks the audience before launching into a Fabulous Thunderbirds number that is always sublime when it receives the King King treatment Wait On Time is no different tonight. The guitar from Alan weeps and pulls at the rock n roll vibe that Wayne picks up with a clash of the cymbal as the guitar beguiles you and pulls you in to a Nimmo musical hug.

Every track is a winner there are no favourites they all send that ecstatic musical shiver down the spine but as ever You Stopped The Rain dedicated to his brother Stevie and Frankie Millers, Jealousy raises hairs on my arms and I hold by breath so that every nuance of the numbers are not missed. Heavenly!

Aynsley Makes YOU Listen with Eyes Wide Open

Aynsley Makes YOU Listen with
Eyes Wide Open

The excitement among the phalanx of Aynsley Lister’s loyal fans has been growing ever since the news that a new album following the critically acclaimed Home was going to be out in 2016. With this much anticipation, all too often the hype and expectation turns to disappointment. Not so with Eyes Wide Open – Mr Lister has done it again with an album of thirteen tracks oozing with assured confidence. The approach is open your ears and connect to Eyes Wide Open from the eye-catching album artwork an original by Anthony Greentree through to the last notes of Aynsley’s delectable guitar work and the undeniable power of the song. The presentation is meticulous, stylish with a vista that beckons you with a booklet that is full of the spirit of Aynsley and his band. Now for the main event the music with twelve self-penned tracks it is a delicious A La Carte of Blues, rock and rocked up blues.

Aynsley’s guitar playing is immense, as any fan would expect, as he digs deep into the emotional groove of his six-strings, bending the notes to his will as he shapes his own signature Blues-rock. Opening with All Of Your Love, we dive straight into a deep pool of Ainsley’s magic with the addition of Bennett Holland on keys adding a deep fruity vein of chords for Aynsley to play with as the deep riffs underline the urgency portrayed in the lyrics.

Building on the opening track is an effortless step for the maestro as joining his trusty rhythm section are horns that just add a full on blues sound.   The drums of Boneto Dryden and Steve Amadeo’s bass always lay down rhythms that hold onto the mood driving the track with that frantic ticking panic when time is rushing by relentlessly. This is a blues mood and message that connects to the real world we spin round in.

Third track in and this has to mentioned gangsters and guitars meld in a track with an ear catching intro defying being fitted into an Aynsley box. The music darkens and we hear that he is taking us down a path to a world that is deep, dark and murky. The door is opened by the lyrics into a world of gambling, dirty money and danger this is a captivating dirty number.

Then we are back to the vintage Aynsley we love to hear recorded and live melding lyrical vocals with guitar playing that just makes your eyes spring wide open with pure delight at the power of the riffs and the subtle beauty of the licks of Time.  He picks up a Freddie King mood and style as we are at the half way point this is thoughtful smoky blues. There is nothing Dishevelled about this number.

The instrumental that is an intro that leads into Kalina stands on its own as guitar playing that makes you weep for this troubled soul. Kalina, with a slower introspective beat hides a secret like the women at the heart of the song. Is this a rock ballad masquerading as something else. Who cares, this is a ballad that unfurls a story of mental health, misery and loss. The melodic simplicity is a mirror in the complexity of a woman bought low and lost behind that happy smile.

Now we are back rocking with the blues as we are Right As Rain with a stinging guitar as he slips in a Tommy Castro number that fits the space perfectly as the album heads for the closing bonus track.  The album is an exploration of relationships, moods self-doubt and hurt as he pairs songs of opposing thoughts and feelings. The Other Part of Me is about completeness and Stay about falling apart the two sides of human relationship constructive and destructive.

Then do you want one more yes, well unlucky for some the thirteenth track is Hold You To It – bass driven vibe this is a stand alone number with horns and a song that will always bring a smile to the face and a spring to your step. The perfect bonus track the unexpected that is rather good.

Approach, Eyes Wide Open with caution! Listening once is not enough there is a new side of Aynsley that is asserting its place on the album. We like it.
