What a start to 2017 – two festivals and some fantastic live gigs, memory box of 2017 filling up fast. Adding to the mix of delights is a cascade of albums arriving through the letterbox both the electronic format and the traditional front door.
First thirteen weeks, I have listened to many and thirty-three have been reviewed Bluesdoodles keyboard warrior loves the listening, enjoys the typing. The hard part is deciding the number of doodle paws for the superb musicianship and variety of styles we listen to. At the end of the first quarter of 2017 from the 1st of January through to 31st March 2017: EIGHT albums shone bright, thus ten doodle paws were stamped on the cover.

Do not let the clear blue skies deceive you, Cardiff is in for a British rock invasion with the promise of stormy weather brewing under the mighty hammer of Thor as Thunder hit the stage with an array of cameras. The show was being filmed tonight which added to the eagerness to get the show underway. Opening the evening, Cats In Space filled The Motorpoint Arena’s stage with energy and ready to warm up an already excitable Cardiff crowd. The rock is classic, British taking you back to the seventies highlighted by the entrance to The Sweeney theme tune. The vocalist and frontman Paul Manzi is engaging and sings a mighty fine rock melody, reminding you why they caused a noise a few years back with Too Many Gods, their debut album. The sound was polished with layers of sounds and textures with keys and guitars displaying in all their glories on Greatest Story Never Told a track that stood out from the others. With Andy Stewart behind the keyboard wearing a mighty fine Top Hat adorned quirky decorations the choice of The Mad Hatters Tea Party was a perfect fit and introducing fans to their forthcoming album of the same title. With all the cats launched into space replete with rock. the crowd was ready for the forecasted stormy weather as the mighty Thunder took to the stage.
The Motorpoint was hot the cheering immense as Jungle Boogie from Kool and The Gang rang out and the band took to the stage and Danny Bowes lifted the mic to sing, Brit Rock never sounded better in a set that was full of tracks from their acclaimed latest album Rip It Up. The welcome from the Capital City of Wales was warm and heartfelt we wanted the evening to rock our socks off with energy and surprises and Thunder certainly delivered from the first to the last note. As ever The Motorpoint a vast cavernous space more Sports Hall than Concert Hall the echoes were present but the sound guys had certainly worked hard to reduce them for tonight to a minimum.
Opening with No One Gets Out Alive, from Rip It Up, the crowd were totally immersed into the waves of Thunder sound, the question to be asked would they let the band on the stage? Cardiff was in a mood to party especially with camera’s aloft swooping across the arena. Danny Bowes was in his element engaging and egging the crowd on to be louder as he danced and swirled around the stage with is signature boundless energy. Combining this with never missing a beat and his vocals always clear and soaring majestically out across the auditorium. Thunder is not a band supporting the frontman’s antics they are a tour-de-force to enjoy with rock melodies and riffs cascading through every track. Luke Morley’s guitar playing was immense the solo lead breaks pulling out the emotional energy within the rock with the power of Gary James aka Harry drumming immaculately as ever a demonstration of how cymbals can be subtle as well as clanging with brute force. Completing the quintet, bassist Chris Childs with his solid rhythms and Ben Matthews with his guitar, keys and the mighty cowbell towards the end of the set on Love Walked In.
The perennial crowd pleaser River of Pain (Shooting at the Sun), proves Dany’s voice is as lyrically powerful and full of singing acrobatics as ever and makes Thunder’s rock a fizzy delight, a storm brewing that always refreshes and never cools the Cardiff Crowd. In between the half a dozen tracks from Rip It Up including the title track and yes Cardiff did Rip It Up, the cheering of the crowd was off the Richter scale. Old favourites were given an airing sounding fresh as ever with Backstreet Symphony and Don’t Wait for Me slipped into a set list that was alive with hallmarked British Rock verve and energy.
Friday night provided a big kick start for the weekend and before the encore, Cardiff was having the weekend of their lives. With three more numbers filling in the encore sandwich was She Likes Cocaine from Rip It Up a special track on the album with the addition of Lynne Jackaman’s powerful rock operatic soprano crescendos. Tonight for Cardiff Jackaman stepped on stage and lifted the atmosphere a notch higher. What a way to lead into the last song of the night. A great gig by one of the best live British Rock acts around.
Thunder Storming album Rip It Up Rocks the Speakers
Whatever the weather, whatever your mood, you know when Thunder is in the air pouring from the speaker then you are in for a good time. I dare you to listen to Rip It Up without getting up and dancing around, tapping your feet and letting the Thunder vibe flow through your veins making Rip It Up a rocking good feel good listen. You would expect no less from Danny Bowes and the band.
Following on from the success of Wonderdays, the quintet are delivering rock that has a brightness that belies the fact that they have been producing records for twenty-seven years. Rip It Up is youthful and fun to listen to with a diverse range of tones and approaches to the lyrics that showcase the full vocal range of frontman Danny Bowes. Thunder is a band with the musicians playing so much more than a platform for Danny vocals. Go to any Thunder gig and the chant of Harry, Harry for the drummer is evidence of Thunders roar.
Opening with No One Gets Out Alive, we are introduced to the expected Thunder sound Garry James sticks pounding like Thors hammer cymbals and skin. The celebration of duelling with guitars of Luke Morley and Ben Matthews. Completing the explosive power id the exquisite bass lines of Chris Childs pull the melody along so we don’t care that they are telling us the No One Gets Out Alive! We are ready to seize the moment with the band and enjoy the album clapping your hands in pure joy.
The title track is like an old friend familiar through radio play. Yes, do as you are told turn the volume up and Rip It Up with your rocking friends Thunder. Tempo changes with curling guitar riff and a blues-fueled rock number that despite its title is fun to listen to. The lyrics though are a salutatory warning of the dangers of party scenes and hedonism. The girl She Likes Cocaine is a must listen strong lyrics, instrumentation and cymbal work that rings with the purity of a bell in the clear air after a storm. Now, for the ballad Right From The Start, which is accomplished with lead breaks that are juicy full and weave the emotions of Danny’s singing another track that works as the realisation that this is a band recording at the top of their game. This is crafted rock full of difference and nuances. Every track has its highlights and will always receive a thunderous applause from Thunder fans.
The album is half way through taking shape as the rock is styled and reformed to suit the moment. Heartbreak Hurricane, following on from the cowbell spectacular of Shakedown. A ballad full of emotional pain, never maudlin as the instruments raise the tempo behind the searing vocals from Danny. Then there is Rock. It is good with The Enemy Inside and Tumbling Down. You now that this is a British Band playing the rock they love and understand, loud fast and melodic with an edge from the lyrics. Closing out with There’s Always A Loser, Harry’s drums lay down the beat simple and powerful in its intent. Once again it as a hauntingly beautiful tone of Danny’s vocals and lyrics centre stage emotional charged. The track builds with guitar hooks and licks that curl and wrap There’s Always A Loser a comfort blanket of Rock. The lead break is searing as the pain is reflected for Danny to sing the lyrics as the album fades. Turn it up and play again. With eleven immense tracks, with every listen you will hear a new lyric, another drum roll and guitar lick.

How does Sunburn and Rust combine for Steelhouse Festival Glory? The glory part is easy two days of phenomenal live music on top of a mountain in Wales. The sunburn and rust that is the vagaries of a Welsh summer, Saturday was scorching hot, whilst on Sunday the misty drizzle dampened the ground but not the spirit of rocking fun.
Saturday 23rd July 2016 – Hot and Sunny Rocking
Opening a festival is a daunting experience. Bigfoot, a young rock band from Wigan, stepped on the stage and left a lasting impression. This is a band with the potential to go places, full of confidence and good songs they were a hit, still remembered as the festival drew to a close on Sunday. Saturday was warming up throughout the day, with each successive band raising the bar ever higher as the temperature, excitement and fun grew. Next up was Dirty Thrills, they definitely thrilled the crowds with rocked up individuality with a thread of blues as bright as the skies overhead. Full of energy on stage they interact with each other and the crowds, the high jinx’s though never deflects from the deep groove-laden music. A great set they will keep building their reputation as rocked-up contemporary excitement from Dirty Thrills.
Centre stage of any festival is the music from the stage, but to get a true festival vibe it is the added extra. After the steep climb up the mountain on a dusty track you are greeted with a vista that spreads across the horizon it is beautiful. The stage dominates the area. In addition there is a wide selection of foods and drinks alcoholic and some delicious coffee. Then there was the lovely jewelry made from guitar strings, leather goods, bandanas (the doodle, Othello, in bluesdoodles is delighted with his new red bandana that is his little bit of The Dead Daisies) and the festival and bands merchandise.
The next two bands show different sides of rock, Vega, with a charismatic lead singer who knew how to flaunt the power of the runway stage they got everyone’s attention with the dramatic entrance, and cartoon backdrop. Once their attention was gained the audience warmed to them this is rock that will always, please. Young dudes that are getting deserved attention are Tax The Heat, and in the heat of the afternoon if they were tax collectors they would have pulled in the money. They do not need to be tax collectors the heat is in the rock they deliver from the strong rhythm section through to Alex Veale up front this is a stylish band with depth and delicious slide guitar from JP. The heat will continue to rise for this young band.
In between the sets the breaks are long enough to catch up with friends, make new acquaintances and deepen the relationship between Steelhouse and festival attendees. This year as the festival develops the campsite area has a new addition, Glamping tents, which proved popular as they were sold out weeks before the festival dates.
The shadows lengthened and the sun cooled as the last four bands of a wonderful opening day got ready to strut their stuff. First of the international bands from Finland, Von Hertzen Brothers, with a spectacular backdrop telling a story of two Ravens in chains against the red background. New Day Rising their current album cover is certainly a powerful image and the music hit the mark with a prog-rock twist and keys that provided a textured background sound. Mikko the vocalist has wonderful phrasing singing gently then with vigour and at times with a roughened edge. They added another layer of rock strata building the Saturday into a perfect festival memory. Following on Blues Pills kept the Scandinavian feel with Swedish/American/French inspired rock and the first woman, Elin Larsson up front burning up the stage with her stunning vocals at Steelhouse. The quartet mix up the flow with a definite sixties feeling as the lead guitar curls around the music redolent of early Fleetwood Mac, Hendrix, Aretha Franklin creating a sound that is their own Blues Pills mesmerizes with an addictive psychedelic rock.
To follow this we had The Answer, celebrating the tenth anniversary of the release of their debut album, Rise. Cormac’s distinctive vocals got the set underway as unusually for a festival they played the album in full. The set was full of emotional command reminding you of how good the album was and still is. In this day and age of streaming and random play the set re-asserted the inherent power and flow of hearing the whole album as the artist planned it. There is context story and drama. The audience participation was enthusiastic on Preachin’ Blues this was quality festival entertainment. Now the final live band of the opening day.
The only threat of bad weather today was always going to be from the stage where a storm of Thunder was being counted down by the phalanx of fans up front they wanted to see every moment of the final set as the day darkened into a summer’s night. Yes, the air temperature was dropping high above Ebbw Vale, the festival was heating up a light display, entrance music and then Thunder hit the stage to the chant of Harry! Harry as the drummer took his seat. Danny Bowes lead from the front building the vocals and the crowd’s excitement. Thunder did not disappoint, hitting the music running with a thunderous set that connected with fans and beyond. The audience sang to the words that tripped off the tongue we were partying the night away creating a great atmosphere as the last notes faded away. For those who wanted to party the night was young with the DJ’s setting up for dancing and fun at a festival with no neighbours to upset.
Sunday 24th July 2016 – Grey, Drizzle and Misty Rocking
Day one, was a success, anticipation was high for day two as Last Great Dreamers started the day’s rock fest. With their take on glam rock, they opened up to a bleary-eyed crowd for me their pop rock got Sunday off to a meandering start and the weakest band so far. Next up were Hand Of Dimes full of Welsh verve and pizazz as both singer and front man Nev MacDonald got the early birds rocking through the drizzle and Sunday morning mist nothing was going to dampen this festival. This is rock music that warms your rocky heart and soul and the first and only harmonica of the festival thanks to Neil Garland the keyboard player and fellow ex. SKIN member. This is a band that understands space between the chords, the timing was superb and layers of sound certainly kick starting the day. Toseland were up next and the first technical gremlins hit the stage crew, quickly dealt with and the live music was back on stage. James Toseland, may have left the adrenalin-fueled world of motorbike racing but he still packs an adrenaline-fueled vocal punch. James has surrounded himself with a band that enhances his vocal prowess playing with energy and excitement. The set was the highlight pf the festival for many and Toseland certainly won new fans after this performance.
Today, Welsh weather reverted to type, the sun was shrouded in mist, interspersed with drizzle and rain. That did nothing to dampen the festival audience spirits. Steelhouse in its sixth year is growing in size and the reputation is based on the music not the weather.
The stage was now set for Raveneye, and we were in for some guitar fireworks from Oli Brown. He may have started out his career as a blues guitarist, but this young man certainly knows how to rock and put on a show. Including not missing a note as he is paraded around the stage on the shoulders of bassist Aaron Spiers. Raveneye’s set was animated and the music superb with the vestiges of his blues career a pick on his thumb and a shining sapphire blue guitar.
There was no doubt that the excitement around the next out was equivalent for a headliner. Who? The Dead Daisies. Why? Their sound is stunning, awesome, they are a live band that excites with superb melodies, and fantastic vocals. The Dead Daises connect to your rocking heart and soul the music flows through your veins full of electric brilliance and spark. This is Rock n’ Roll that makes you want to scream, shout out loud and laugh with pure delight. The latest member is Doug Aldrich who fits into the Daisy gang perfectly. John Corabi, on vocals, fronts this charismatic group and is given the room to develop the lyrics and have fun. We are taken back to the seventies and forward to now as they blend the sounds, whilst delivering their re-takes of classics. The rhythm section powers through the rock with the animated and flamboyant Marco Mendoza on bass and drummer Brian Titchy and rhythm guitarist David Lowy. The festival was on fire with excitement as the set sadly drew to a close many just wanted them to play on as for them The Dead Daisies were the band of the festival.
The programme moved on with Hey! Hello!, we were in for some noisy pop-rock with Ginger Wildheart, The Rev and two women Ai on drums and new singer up front they were fun and the pop rock contrasted to The Dead Daisies who are never an easy band to follow. Just as everyone had given up on being dry and seeing the sun the crowds rolled away asTerrorvision hit the stage. They have a distinctive lively rock sound with elements of rap, glam and the late eighties tonal context. Terrorvision are definitely the marmite band of the weekend, causing many a debate between the fans and those who just don’t quite get the band. The fans were treated to a set that captured rock they delight in.
Now for the finale, the skies once again darkened the lights shone as The Darkness bought 2016 Steelhouse to a close. The Darkness rewarded the fans for waiting for them to play as the rock-pop theme of the last three acts was maintained. Jason and The Darkness provided an uplifting and rousing finale to the festival.
A big thank you to the organisers Max and Lee and the phalanx of volunteers who kept the bands happy back stage and the whole event organized, the sound crews, and security. Then a special award should go to the mighty Darren Redick from Planet Rock for carrying out the MC role, stopping and talking to many who stop him as he wanders around the festival.
Every band performed at the top of their game, bringing live music energy to the festival. Bluesdoodles standout acts were opening band Bigfoot and Von Hertzen Brothers, both new bands for us. Then we really enjoyed Tax The Heat another young band going places, The Answer, Blues Pills and Raveneye. The top band of the weekend just has to be the effervescent The Dead Daisies.
Sunburn and Rust combined for Steelhouse Glory 2016, for me The Dead Daisies should have been the headliners. But that said what a fantastic two days of rock energy and music high up a mountain via a dirt road. Roll on 2017 when we will be back up the mountain. Make sure you keep the Crepe stall they were perfect.
Colston Hall, Bristol we made it through the chaotic traffic that was conspiring to make us late. We overcame and were there to see the first band in a smorgasbord of styles on offer tonight. With three bands it was going to be wall to wall guitars, vocals and keyboards with King King, Terrorvision and THUNDER!
What a start King King are not a bottom of the bill blues rock outfit. Thirty minutes are just not long enough we wanted more of Alan Nimmo’s honey dripping vocals that pour over his guitar strings. They made the best use of the time, chatter kept to a minimum they let the music do the talking. One thing for certain they made another phalnax of fans tonight, who will want to hear the band again very soon – you are in luck they are back on tour – checkout dates and venues HERE. King King are more than a little bit special they are a quartet of talent. King King are a band that celebrate each other’s abilities, thus the musical depth is greater than the sum of the individual inputs. Kilted and dazzling as ever front man Alan Nimmo adds the shining finishing touches to the surround provided by his musical comrades. The keys add lead breaks and curlicues of chords to every track thanks to Bob Fridzema, and the rhythm section, drummer Wayne Proctor and Lindsay Coulson on bass adding yet another tonal layer to the King King’s rising blues Rock Banner. What an opening act! We wanted more but sadly was not to be appropriately squeezed into a whistle-stop tour of King King songs was Hurricane kicking up a storm before Thunder, and then Bristol had a chance to sing with Rush Hour and You Drive Me Crazy. King King came and once again excited and royally conquered Bristol with blues rock that appeals and thrills every time.
What an efficient turn- around equipment taken off the front of stage and Terrovision were set up and ready to take over the baton handed to them by King King to entertain.
Terrovision, a band from Bradford not one I have heard much of so intrigued. Would they be terrifying or a visual delight? It turned out they for me were neither! For me they just did not connect in my musical lexicon. They were a letdown following the opening set. They delivered a set of high-octane power rock-pop, many fans in the audience were delighted with the antics. The second keyboard player of the night, who kept rocking the keyboard into a strange angle which added nothing the sound. Terrorvision definitely infused the high energy set with powerful riffs. Tony Wright fronting the band cavorts across the stage delivering his vocals whether on Discotheque Wreck the opening number right through to the expected songs in the set. The fans loved the trip down nostalgia road – My House, Alice and What’s The Matter. The set was showmanship over substance why take your shirt of Tony it added nothing to D’ya Wanna Go Faster as he leaped around the stage. Thankfully he did put another shirt on. Terrorvision fans were delighted they understand what Terrorvision are about musically this metal-pop just did not ignite.
Another quick set change. Entering the stage to Edgar Winter on the PA followed by a clap of thunder! Danny Bowes and Thunder under a blaze of lights hit the stage in Bristol the applause, shouts and whistles were thunderous. The atmosphere just got hotter and hotter the energy and the thrill of the audience was uniform from the front of the stage up through into the seats upstairs. Starting the show with Wonder Days, title track off their current nostalgia drenched album. Danny had complete control of the crowd generating an electric atmosphere that he continued to re-fuel throughout the set.
Thunder is a band that refused to fade away, they have a fan base that is alive, well and growing this is the renaissance of a much underrated rock band. The reward a top-ten album, chart topping DVD and sell out shows – Colston Hall was sold out months ago.
Danny’s vocals are superb as he spits out the lyrics and then throughs in a gentler side. With his long-time partner in music Luke Morley on guitar. Adding into the Thunder mix that blew up a storm are one of the most popular drummers Gary ‘Harry’ James combined with Chris Childs the rhythm is assured. We still need a another layer of tones so who else could fill the role it has to be multi-instrumentalist Ben Matthews who not only plays a splendid cowbell his true role is guitarist and keyboard player. Fantastic to see him back on stage after his brush with Cancer.
This is not a strutting testosterone fueled rock band. Thunder want to have some cheeky fun, they want to have a rock fest of joyous energy. The set list was laden with songs from Wonder Days. There was also time to revisit past glories including River of Pain from the 1995 Behind Closed Door album and further back Like A Satellite. The crowd whooped with delight and earned a chiding from Danny as he smiled and said “you’re not helping”. Despite the passage of time, which Danny referred to his vocal prowess has not diminished with the passing years. He is unarguably on of the finest rock voices on the circuit today.
Luke Morely played with his characteristic way, tasteful considerate and never overwhelming the band. As Danny Bowes left the stage the acoustic was his chosen guitar with a gentle number fitting neatly into the set a juxtaposition to the rest of the evening. The interlude was short-lived the Gibson flying V tool over the voice was back and the band picked up the rock tempo with a flick of the lights adding more power to the set Rock Conquers All. The Colston Hall crowd loved every maneuver Danny used to get them participating the sparks between stage and audience were as intense as an electric storm. The cowbell added to I Love You More Than Rock and Roll, and Ben used the bell for a short while in the next track before casually throwing it towards the back of the stage where it was deftly caught. Picking up the guitar the bell was silenced.
The noise rose and rose as the demand for an encore was screamed, stamped and shouted for and the enthusiastic and happy audience was rewarded with Serpentine from Wonder Days and the inevitable Dirty Love.
Thunder tonight, played a magnificent set of classic rock sparking with lightening of guitars and keys and the thunderous power of ‘Harry’ on drums. SUPERB!!!
