It is definitely a Noble DAY EIGHT Bluesdoodles Advent Calendar. This is a huge thank you for the music that has inspired and motivated Bluesdoodles, with exciting albums and tours that makes the music year speed by.
Tonight Bad Touch Headline The Tunnels Majestically. The third night of the first headline tour was a phenomenal success but as Stevie Westwood said, tonight is not about one band as he praised the two acts that set The tunnels alight for the Headliners. Opening the night local band Flowerpot and then Mollie Marriott, live music doesn’t get much better.
Flowerpot, an all-women outfit have been gaining the momentum of attention by opening for acts visiting Bristol and headlining their own shows. This young band full of raw energy had seven numbers to showcase their own brand of grungy, punk-driven rock. The music was not hewn from a particular vein of rock. The band had their own sound and energy that flowed from the classy drumming from Jess which defined the shape of the music that allowed Morgan on Bass pick up the rhythm and rock as her flowing and at times revolving hair orchestrated her sound. Pulling the sound together Ellie on guitar provided the melodic chords and riffs for Steph on vocals to hook onto. Up front Steph on vocals controlled the band and had the audience captured as they listened to the lyrics that had something to say as we heard about snails, loser girl and a debut of a new number Bruised. After their raw, eclectic and blistering set, we were left not battered and bruised or trailing along at a snail’s pace but ready for the next two acts as The Tunnels filled and the temperature raised by Flowerpot.
Mollie Marriott with her critically acclaimed album Truth Is A Wolf was the next band. Quick change round and the band was on stage. A complete contrast to Flowerpot. The raw intensity was replaced by a softer more malleable sculptured rock. Mollie’s voiced captivated with its purity from the first note of her opening number Run With The Hounds with the organ looped in so the full sound achieved on the album can be heard live. Tonight surrounded by her band Mollie warmed the crowded venue with her winning smile and a vocal range that captured the depth of the lyrics and topics covered.
The rhythm section was solid and the lead guitar giving Mollie the chords, melody and hooks for her vocals to soar. Early in the set, she slipped in a new number Nobody To Love and if this is what is going to be on the follow-up album I am counting down the days. One of the highlights of the too short set was Broken, the power, emotion and passion shined from Mollie’s face through to the vocal delivery. We all connected with the feeling of being broken after a failed relationship and hurting people close to us. In this case Mollie’s daughter and her relationship with her. In the set was title track Truth is a Wolf and the rockier number King Of Hearts later in the set sleazier, dirty and filled the venue with another side of multifaceted Mollie. Vocals coloured the stage along with a band that flexed its muscles as she blended rock with jazz, blues and soul a sonic landscape full of texture and tone. Dressed in Black with White guitars and bass the monochromatic visuals contrasted with the music. Mollie has a famous surname as the daughter of Steve. Tonight she conquered the venue, with her own name Mollie Marriott, and an act to see live. Her voice is better live than in the studio. The voice is warmer and more personal as the lyrics on the numbers take on emotional meaning. She was in total control of the stage as her final number Control finished an accomplished set and we were now in the mood for Bad Touch.
The excitement fizzed like a can of shaken pop as Bad Touch exploded on the stage on their first headlining appearance in Bristol. The crowd were hot for their spectacular feel-good sound captured on the album Truth Be Told. We were definitely not disappointed as they opened with Take Me Away. Yes, we were taken away on the rollercoaster of a band on fire playing the music they love to an audience that was up to be given the Bad Touch treatment from this effervescent five-piece. The first all-male band of the evening and they knew the audience as already hot for live music so no warm-up numbers for the band they were straight in with high voltage music with a ringing sting that excited The Tunnels tonight. The set definitely elevated them to the deserved headline status one this tour with the hefty heavy/southern rock influences and bags of attitude this is a band that knows how to party. All the musicians understand their role and play to each other’s strengths. With the power of a rhythm section that lays now a depth of sound that grounds the sound as George Drewry’s drumming is timely, powerful and into this he mixes when required a subtleness, a gentle touch. Joining his rhythmic tones is Michael Bailey on bass with his hair flowing, and moving in time with the deep southern hot chords. The guitarist adds the next layer that smarts and stings cajole and weeps as Rob Glendinning takes the lead with stylish slide or plectrum lead guitar work that is simply stupendous. Daniel ‘Seeks’ Seekings adds with top-drawer rhythm guitar work filling in and drawing out the guitar. This quartet is loud and full of imposing attitude and sound. How do you top that? Easy add Stevie Westwood into the vocals as vocals frontman and the glossiest, curly mane of hair and that cheeky waxed moustache, He steps into the frontman role with a swagger, style and talent. Phenomenal!
We have the musicians on stage, full of vim and swagger now for the music. They delivered with a mix of old and new we all were touched with their majestic interpretation of Rock N’ roll Norfolk style tonight. The set list was the perfect blending of fast, faster furious and the breather we all need. Not once did the band lose control of the sound they are so good at delivering. Stevie’s vocals perfect for the genre and the quality of the backing vocals take the sound to another level. We shared a Sweet Little Secret with the band and delighted as the guitarist played off each other both with their confident cool, arrogant swagger that fills the stage with a six-string punch. Highlights – every number played. Those that stood out Wise Water and great to hear Down one of their earliest numbers that morphed seamlessly into Lynyrd Skynyrd’s classic Can’t You See. Down it doesn’t appear on any album must be a contender for the much anticipated follow up to Truth Be Told. A definite keeper for the forthcoming album is the new song aired tonight I Belong that makes full use of Rob’s ace slide work. Something Someone took the tempo down with an acoustic ballad as the Stevie and Rob duet and then the band return picking up the beat and building the energy for the last few numbers of the set. We were rocking and singing along to a perennial favourite My Mother Told Me. With one of their signature tracks Take Your Time they ruled it as the favourites flowed with Outlaw and closing with the might The Mountain. What a great atmosphere generated as we wanted the band to play on this was a night to remember. We had two more numbers as the encore-closing with the single from the album 99% that got them noticed by Planet Rock and others closing the night leaving us on a high. But before that, a special moment as Mollie Marriott returned to duet with Stevie and the band on Baby Get it On Tina Turner’s classic given the Westwood/Marriott treatment. What a night! Stevie Westwood Talking About Bad Touch Headline Tour
BD: Thank you for taking time to talk to Bluesdoodles again before you head out on a headline tour with Mollie Marriott, Celebrating the tour you have just released a video with the download available from Monday 23rd October. The number Baby Get It On sounds fab love the inclusion of Mollie’s vocals. Let’s start off with how did you decide on this Tina Turner Classic? SW: We wanted a new number to promote the tour for our first headline tour. Delighted to have the amazing Mollie Marriott as our special guest real privilege she has such an amazing voice. Seeks our guitarist said let’s try this one and he had a cracking arrangement. We demoed it and recorded the number and sent it to Mollie. Mollie liked it as so she came up to the studio and we recorded the video. The whole this was a quick turnaround from Seeks first suggesting Baby Get It On and then half day in the studio recording the number.
BD: Bad Touch has been touring with some great acts including King King and recently Kentucky Headhunters how does it feel to be Headliners?
SW: Headlining, yes feel bizarre weird place excited nervous, a good nervous will give chance for fans a chance to come out and support us. We are planning to get everyone who has seen us play live out the nights will be good value for money. Good times to be had. The support from Mollie will be immense. So we are asking everyone who has heard a radio play or seen us supporting some amazing acts, come out and support live music. We have as everyone keeps saying come a long way in a relatively short time we just now have to keep moving forward. BD: How do you keep the music contemporary when the influences are clearly out of the 1970’s, that bluesy Southern Rock sound. How do you manage not to be a retro band, but one with a relevance for audiences here and now despite being compared to Black Crowes and others?
SW: Ha! Yes, we do keep getting compared to bands of the ‘70’s. We didn’t go out to do that. Yes, we are all fans of many bands from Lynyrd Skynyrd through to Led Zeppelin. The music we write is what we want to write the music we want to play to audiences. We are also influenced by contemporary bands, including Temperance Movement, The Answer, Rival Sons and Blackberry Smoke. Listening and absorbing music from a variety of bands keeps our finger on the pulse. The truth is Bad Touch sound is the one we have shaped by all the members of the band. You have to keep going nowadays, writing the music you want to write, Bad Touch are creating a sound that is getting us heard. BD: Your album Truth Be Told was out last year and has gained you lots of fans with radio airplay. Will we be hearing some new music in the Headline set list?
SW: Yes thanks to stations like Planet Rock for the support. We have four new songs that will probably be on the new album which we are planning to release in the first half of 2018. It is good to play them live, can see what people think. How audience reacts to them and keeps the set list fresh. So yes there will be some new music on the set list every night we play.

BD: For people who have missed out on seeing Bad Touch Live how would you describe your sound and live performance. What makes Bad Touch the band to see in 2017. SW: Mmmm… honestly that is hard to answer. None of us has seen ourselves play live or reviewed our shows! What I can say is we play to make people feel good about themselves. We are a feel good Rock N’ Roll Band. We aim to break down the space between band and audiences we want to create that one good party feel. You have reviewed us what do you say?
BD: Ha! That is cheating turning the tables. Yes, feel good music that makes you smile. You certainly are a high energy performers that raise the temperature of any venue. SW: Glad you have enjoyed the show.
BD: Stevie, you are the vocalist and frontman of Bad Touch share with our readers how you interact with the band. From your performance on stage, it always appears that you are having fun. SW: Truthfully why would we be doing this, playing in a band, if we were not having fun? Without being too pessimistic it is certainly not for the money! As a band, we look at it as we are all brothers together. We all communicate on stage I find a raised eyebrow works well along with a quick word in ears. We do talk to each other between numbers. The fun is doing the numbers different to the studio version, keeping it fresh reacting to the audience building a conversation between the band and the audiences.
BD: Having seen you play live a few times, you always include a couple of covers how do you choose them. Also, will the new single Baby Get It On make an appearance in the forthcoming tour? SW: Mmm…. playing number live, the stage could be cramped come to a show and find out. Would be fun Mollie is such a great singer full of talent. So may make an appearance. We always have a couple covers up our sleeves, audiences know these songs which is great if it is the first time they are seeing us live, Secondly used to feel up the time of the set if we have run ahead of ourselves, in fact, that is generally the reason why we add them into the set.
BD: The world of music is tough. Bad Touch seems to have an upward trajectory getting your music heard is a challenge and you have had lots of Radio Plays from the album. What impact both positive and negative is of downloads and streaming services such as YouTube, Sound Cloud, Spotify for Bad Touch’s music and getting the sound heard to a wide audience?
SW: Music business is tough. Thank you, we like to think we are moving upwards long may that continue. I am old fashioned I like to buy the CD. I like building my collection and being able to browse and choose what I am going to play. I cherish what I have bought. That said I am definitely not poo pooing anyone who listens to their music using streaming services. That said though I do feel that there has been a huge devaluation in the value of music now have the ability to have what you want without paying(or only paying minimal amount) for it. It is very hard, don’t know really we use YouTube and Sound Cloud for our music and it is a way to find music. I do though believe that streaming stops people from having to pay for music if you pay you put more value on the music you are listening to. BD: Read recently that people only listen to few seconds of intro before trying another track. SW: Yes, attention spans are now so short need to catch people attention in first few seconds or they move on. Technology is both amazing and scary everything is available in the instant which definitely has positives and negatives. I still like having my CD’s on a shelf they are always available even when Wi-Fi is down.
BD: What other plans and excitements have you got planned for 2018 following a very busy 2017?
SW: Taking it as it comes. First priority is the new album follow-up to Truth Be Told. Bookings for 2018 are coming in so we will be keeping getting out there performing in front of audiences. BD: What was the first album you bought and what is the most recent?
SW: Big Willie Style – Will Smith Like an Arrow by Blackberry Smoke BD: We asked you your fantasy band when we talked last year so what are you listening to at the moment; whether on the tour bus or relaxing?
SW: Everything and anything. When out on tour we all bring the music we are listening to. We talk about it what we like about it. All that we listen to sculpt the Bad Touch sound as we get down and write new stuff together. Currently, we have been listening to lots of Country having been on Tour with Kentucky Headhunters. Some great music out there to be discovered.

Listen to the album in full, then again and then start to consider the review. Why? Get to know Mollie Marriott the musician, singer in her own right. Forever connected to her famous father. Judge the music for what it is, Mollie coming up front having been a backing singer. The album has a wolfish grin throughout, a little bit dark, a smidgen of hunger and a wildness that needs to be tamed as Mollie gets personal with the lyrics.
From the opening, this is a singer taking control of her destiny. Turning up the heat, beat and building from a rhythmic bass that lets the wolf in Mollie free grabbing control of her own destiny. The song co-written with Sam Tanner(Brother Strut) lays down the path Mollie wants to take, being her own person as she tames, shapes and most importantly is in control of her own music and artistry. This s the perfect show-stopping single to show to the world I want to be heard as I sing the music that moves me.
Mollie the songwriter and singer explores throughout the album the hurt and pain of loss and life’s bitter, sometimes dark experiences. She empathises in vocal tone pulling on the hurt until scars are revealed. Importantly for the integrity of the music she never wallows or sinks into a pool of despair. Mollie is stronger and will Run With The Hounds fashioning her own distinctive creative pathway.
The vocals have an inner power that soars above the band’s melodic lines. They never dominate but always give Mollie a springboard to vocally soar from. The instrumentation and production are spot on. Thanks to the band who play with her live. This shines through with a mutual understanding an umbilical chord of understanding. The title track Truth Is A Wolf is the perfect demonstration of this mutual harmonization between Mollie Marriott and her band, Johnson-Jay Medwik-Daley (guitar), Sam Tanner (keyboards), Henrik Irgens (bass), Alex Reeves (drums) and Izzy Chase-Phillmore (backing vocals). As her voice howls with crystal clarity that would be the envy of many a pop diva. She is no diva. The intricacy of the number written by Gary Nicholson defines her. There is an edge that has the swirl of rock a hook of grunge rooted in an authenticity of sound making this number catchy, bewitching and beguiling. The first three tracks lay down the gauntlet can the high standard be maintained? The answer is Yes & No, as she explores different styles and tempos.
The slow ballad, Give Me A Reason fails to ignite, it is too dreamy and wistful the number lacks that inner grit that pulls the lustrous pearl from the Oyster. Then it slowly picks up as we have the song Run With Hounds and the tempo builds again with Love Your Bones. A tribute to her friend who died the sadness is underlying emotion the power of loving your bones fulfilled by the strings of the cello. It is the power of love remaining and strangely uplifting forward moving number.
Then we turn the corner to the closing numbers many co-written. This strengthens the power in the numbers King Of Hearts, penultimate number co-penned with Judie Tzuke and Graham Kearns is full of the wolfish rock power of the earlier tracks. The number has a grungy edge that the guitar amplifies the sound that is built creating an electrofused crescendo that leads neatly into the closing number My Heaven Can Wait. The number is full of epic proportions as the voice explores the lowest point of her emotional crash. Deeply personal the hurt can be experienced in the sonic ranges and shapes of the instruments as the last notes fade away.
Having explored the darker side of life. Truth Is A wolf surprisingly leaves you feeling content, uplifted with a spring in your step and ear-worm repeating guitar riffs.
Debut album that sets Mollie Marriott firmly on the road as a solo singer. The style that instantly identifies the voice still needs to be defined with a sharpness of direction. The second album will set this down. The melodic, crystal clear vocals that have the ability to shape the emotions suits the darker sound where her emotions can run with the pack of wolves. Mollie Marriott, daughter of former Small Faces and Humble Pie singer/guitarist Steve Marriott and step-daughter to singer Joe Brown has spent her music career in the wings, having worked mostly as a backing singer with numerous artists including Oasis and Joe Brown.
Mollie’s sassy soulful blues vocals are full of classic influences. She can find a raw emotional edge that the best soul and rock singers have – at times rootsy and upscale through to modest and classy with a sustained relaxed feel.

Borderline Beckons Mollie Marriott and Debut Album
Mollie Marriott, daughter of former Small Faces and Humble Pie singer/guitarist Steve Marriott and step-daughter to singer Joe Brown took time out to chat with Bluesdoodles. With debut album Truth Is A Wolf due out later this year Mollie is performing an intimate concert at London Borderline on Thursday 1st June 2017. Mollie took time out of a busy schedule having recently toured with Wilko Johnson & Paul Weller.
BD:Mollie thank you for taking the time to chat to Bluesdoodles MM: Thank you as well, always good to talk about music.
BD: You are the daughter of Steve Marriott; until now your music career as a backing singer for many musicians including your step-father Joe Brown. What was the motivation to step out front taking centre stage? MM: Stepping out on centre stage, felt right now was the right time. I was not bothered before I loved being a backing vocalist. I could turn up sing and go; not get involved with all the other stuff. I had seen the scary stuff connected with the industry. I had watched what it can do to people, it put me off. I wanted to write my own stuff, I knew that I had to live life first. I am influenced by Stevie Nicks & Alanis Morissette; raw and dark honest that is who I wanted to write. I now have the head space; with a few breakdowns to write about. In the family the last is called Crash 2012. Hitting Rock bottom is good as the only way is up to rebuild your life as you want it. Now I am in a good place since I hit 30; being in your thirties is great. I was a young mum at 23; when your twenties are about having fun with people in your life because they are around. Thirty, you become your own person now where you want to go and who you are so all is good.
BD: With a Debut Album Truth is A Wolf announced. How did you decide upon releasing as the first single the number Control? MM: Previously I had a testing tie with record label; basically had no control It was a case of Beautiful women using their beauty to control and trample you. A Mother figure who then betrayed and let you down, as line in my songs says “You saved me to break me”. Taking back control of my music was important so this was the right single to start again with my career, I am in the driver’s seat going where I want to go. I co-wrote this number with Sam Tanner, lead vocalist with Brother Strut. We wrote the song together, we knew right from the beginning Control was the perfect song to release as the first single off the album Truth Is A Wolf.
BD: Tell our readers about the forthcoming album, how did you decide on the title the type of music that best describes your debut? MM: I went to Nashville to start writing the album. The title track Truth Is A Wolf written by Gary Nicholson, he was going to give it to Bonnie Raitt or Susan Tedeschi who are lots of my influences. I heard the demo just wurli and vocals and thought that sums up my album it was the perfect tile song. With tracks that reflect my life Broken, ending of a relationship and the effect that had on me and my daughter. The song Truth Is A Wolf, tied it all in a bow. So many types of music can be used in the description. It is a Rock Album. Yes, many people I have asked as I really do not know have said it is bluesy-rock. Within the Backing vocals there are elements of gospel and country. It is a Rock mix definitely NOT pop laughing. Also, grungy elements. I am a grunge girl love Chris Cornell, Pearl Jam, Jagged Little Pill a favourite album sounds a bit like that as well.
BD: Mollie you are definitely making a statement with your next Gig coming up on the 1st June at The Borderline with guests? MM: Yes, so exciting, this is my first proper headline gig. With support from Anna Kratz, a special friend. We met in Nashville I went to one of her shows as she sung I was completely broken, sobbing she was singing y life, Anna is a wonderful songwriter writing with Ed Sheeran and many more. Pocket dragon are a cool band, with a female lead. It is so important to me that the night is Woman led. I want people to o listen to me as Mollie, Mollie Marriott; NOT “Mollie Marriott daughter of Steve Marriott” – that was not the name on my Birth Certificate. People have said well why not Mollie Brown? Joe Brown my step-dad then there is all that baggage as well. So sticking to the name I was given at birth Mollie Marriott.
BD: With a London Gig under your belt. Are you taking Mollie and her band to be heard outside of London? MM: Yes, definitely tour outside of London. I love getting outside of London to venues in towns and cities. Played The Tramshed in Cardiff when opening for Wilko JohnsonBD: Had to miss that show to my disappointment as away in Sheffield. MM: What a great venue loved playing Cardiff, Nottingham was fun as was Apex in Bury St Edmunds. Playing Liverpool with Paul Weller was mad, even a little bit scary a room full of mods. My show will be exciting to watch, all my band is very visual to watch we move about.
BD: If you were putting together the perfect band with members from across the years (dead or alive) who would you have playing? MM: Oh My God that is such a difficult question, will change the moment I put down the ‘phone Mollie laughs and says:-
Bass: Has to be Flea visually rocks. Drummer: Richie Hayward – he has to have been the best drummer ever! Guitar: This is so difficult going to upset so many people has to be Stevie Marriott (such an under-rated guitarist) Guitar: Joe Bonamassa Vocals: Chris Cornell (he has such an amazing voice)
