It’s been awhile since Texan axe slinger Lance Lopez has released a solo album, but it’s certainly been worth the wait. “Tell The Truth” is full of hard rockin blues, deep southern influences and incendiary yet tasteful guitar playing. Add to this a man who certainly has stories to tell and “Tell The Truth” is a sure-fire hit. As Lance sings himself on the opening track, “Nothin’ worth having, ever came easy to me, the sweetest victories came within an inch of defeat”.

WO’N: Your solo album “Tell The Truth” has been coming for a while now, what’s been the hold up?
LL: We recorded it over a period of a few years – we started recording at the end of 2012 but then Supersonic Blues Machine happened! I headed out to Los Angeles to record the first three tracks with my good friend producer and bass guitarist, Fabrizio Grossi, and then a week later Billy Gibbons showed up and they began working on “Running Whisky” and the next thing you know Supersonic happened in our West of Flushing, South of Frisco album! When we began to record that album, we resumed recording “Tell The Truth” simultaneously to it. We’d start off with Supersonic songs, go out and have a bite come back and the work on “Tell The Truth” for the rest of the day and into the night. Sometimes those were 20 hour days that Fabrizio and I were recording for, but man it was fun! It just took time and in between the first Supersonic record and the latest “Californisoul” I recorded on my own in New York, Texas and wherever I happened to be at the time and would send things back to Fabrizio in LA where he would edit them, mix them and then I’d be back in LA where we would resume recording. It was really when we began recording the second Supersonic Blues Machine album that we actually finished “Tell The Truth” midway through.

WO’N: That must of been crazy working on two records at the same time…
LL: In fact, it was easier! Hahaha! One day Fabrizio and I would work on Supersonic, the next my record – alternating days as opposed to giant long days that were in first place. The other thing for why we did it like that then was that we didn’t have very much more to do on “Tell The Truth” ‘cos we had been working on it for a number of years. The main thing behind it taking so long was Supersonic Blues Machine…but that’s a cool problem to have had!

WO’N: Did you have a different mindset or approach for each album?
LL: Absolutely! Here’s the thing, working with Fabrizio Grossi is super cool in that he very much has a vision of how we want everything to sound, how it should be played, sung, attacked, held back…every last detail that’s super polished and just so well produced man. It was particularly in the early recording split days as I said that it was much more of a collaborative process in Supersonic yet more of an out and out producer role with my solo record. This came about in the writing, the vision and overall delivery for “Tell The Truth”, there’s much more of the Texas blues-rock influence in my record than our Supersonic Blues Machine records. You know that was what was really cool – adding a lot more of the blues harp and slide guitar real authentic sounds in “Tell The Truth” which ended up influencing our Supersonic Blues Machine “Californiasoul”. There was a definite mindset to each, but you can’t help being influenced by what you’re around.

WO’N: Tell The Truth is a very thematic album – a lot of references to redemption, luck, nights out gone wrong…
LL: It’s autobiographical and biographical at the same time. There’s Joey Sykes songwriting, ya know the lead guitar player in The Babys, on this record and really great writer and producer Serge Simic who looked at my life and wrote songs about me instead of like “Hey Lance, here’s a song I wrote about something you don’t care for, wanna put it on your album?”. It was very different having guys look at my life, real good times and real bad times, and coming to me with these songs of how they saw me or what had happened in my life so far. It’s one of the most different experiences I’ve had as a musician than before as I’ve wrote and recorded with people before but with this I had folk coming up to me and saying “‘I’ve wrote this song about you”. Just wow man, just wow…

WO’N: Did it make you feel uncomfortable at all having these guys peer into your life like that and how did you deal with that from an artistic vantage point?
LL: It was real interesting, I can tell you that! Hahaa! Songs like “Down to One Bar”, like damn, some of it was hard to hear, you know a song about my…let’s call it “my adventures in the pub”, hahaa! Like the song “The Real Deal” – Joey Sykes wrote that about me so it was kinda strange to stand there and sing that I’m the real deal! Hahaa! But, hey, that was his vision of me and real interesting to sing it from a first person perspective. It was very cool to have that experience  that people were watching my life from the outside and some of it was very good, some of it was bad, lot’s of ups and downs but it’s really cool that we were able to document all that and that’s the premise – like “Blue Moon Rising” which I co-wrote and it was very touching and a good awakening of sorts to loom back and say “Wow, you know I may of been thinking this but other people are seeing it too”. We were just being open and honest through it all, hence “Tell The Truth”.

WO’N: Now then, it wouldn’t be chat between guitar players if I didn’t ask what ladies you used on the album would it?
LL: No man, it wouldn’t be! I mainly used my Gibson guitars. My R9 Les Paul, my Pelham Blue Firebird (you can see them front and centre in the video for “Down to One Bar”) and also a sunburst Firebird which is a newer one which is my slide guitar. On “Never Came Easy” and “Cash My Check” I used a 1963 Melody Maker that belonged to Warren Haynes’s former guitar technician, Brian Farmer who passed a few years back. A good friend of his brought me his guitar in to play and it just sounded fantastic on those tracks. It was very interesting recording the different guitars on different tracks – I did also use a 1963 Telecaster on “Blue Moon Rising”, you know, just to get the old Stax Records R&B vibe going down for the rhythm tracks, that was really cool.

WO’N: I’m thinking that these guitars will be out in force for the first Provogue Rockin’ The Blues Tour which kicks off in Germany on March 9?
LL: Oh for sure man! You know what the great thing is about The Rockin’ The Blues tour is that everybody on it, we’re all dear friends. Eric Gales, Gary Hoey and young Quinn Sullivan – man we’re gonna be out on that tour having a great time and I’m just looking forward to being back out on the road with those guys. That’s one of the great things about being around other guys is the jamming, in that everybody admires each other, respects each other and are good friends.

WO’N: You guys also play in Holland with the final night of the tour being here in the UK at The Garage in London Saturday, March 17…
LL: Yes man, and it’s gonna be the same every show with this tour so when we’re up on stage jamming, people will be able to feel it, not just hear or see it. There’s no competition, there shouldn’t be in music – we’re just all friends having fun!  I’ll be sitting in with Eric Gales and we’ll play some songs from “Tell The Truth”…and all jam at the end, it’s gonna be cool and a trip for the audience.

WO’N: It’s always great chatting with you, thanks again,  to close off – with all the ups and downs in your career so far, what lessons would you pass on to the youngsters?
LL: Well, you know one of the main ones is that practice is what makes you good. Spending time with your instrument and having the dedication to. It’s like when Eric Gales and I were young, that’s all we did was play the guitar and that even happens today when we get together. It’s all we did as kids, we’d sit and play, but then there’s the bad stuff which you need to avoid. There’s the pitfalls of the substances and the booze – you know you don’t need to take anything to play or sound a certain way…I know that we felt like we did when we were younger and it didn’t do a thing but cause us lots of pain and suffering. If you can avoid trying that myth, steer clear of that and practice well, you may get somewhere and I hope you do.

The album does exactly what it says in the title. Nothing cryptic in the packaging Mascot Label Group have on this compilation album pulled together a selection of fine purveyors of blues that rocks.

Fourteen tracks that Wow you from the first note to the last. This is a sampler that you want to return to. Each track is a perfect reason to buy the complete album to add to your rocking blues treasures. The album is a rich seam hewed out of the vaults at Mascot Label Group. The names are a mix of established stars and up and coming players and then the addition of special guests bring their own brilliance to the music.

Opening with Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Diamonds and Gold the quality if the album is set down. Bluesdoodles has reviewed all the albums that the songs have been selected from. We then hear from young guitar slinger who is stepping on the Midnight Highway, Quinn Sullivan delivers traditional with a youthful verve a sound that is full of potential as it grows and develops. Whereas, Eric Gales is now back in the Middle of The Road and reacquainting his fans with his blues that are deep with soulful rhythm. Been So Long with its curling guitar and lyrics of regrets this is a blues number full of feeling as experiences are considered.

We’re All In This Together is a celebration of guitar that hits the sweet spot as Joe Bonamassa joins Walter Trout. A classy number that drives the rhythm and the vocals hit home as Joe and Walter trade words. This is a classic. Now for a shot of feminine power and mystery as Beth Hart sings Love is A Lie. The number drags you across the floor and fills your belly with fire. Beth’s voice is sultry, inviting and full of majesty with its dark undercurrents.

Dust & Bones is the title selected to highlight Gary Hoey. There is nothing dusty and the guitar and vocals put layers of delicious musical flesh on the bones of the rocking rhythm captured by the band. You are so fortunate if this is the first introduction to Lance Lopez. Mr Lucky is full of strength. To play and sing like this has nothing to do with luck. It is about talent, practice and honing your skills so that I sounds like playing with this verve is as easy as one –two –three… Lopez achieves that and more on this excellent track.

Now People Say – blues is all the same. Rock just spices it up a bit. How wrong are they? Now we have SIMO from Rise & Shine album. This is exceptional music, experimental exciting and taking us in a new direction that you definitely want to dip your musical ears in. How do you follow that! Bring it down sooth the soul with Wade Waist Deep from Thomas Wynn And The Believers. Olivia, Thomas’s sister adds a purity shaping the harmonies giving the compilation another deep dimension. This is the title track from the album with hypnotic drums and guitar that weeps full of tonal texture a country is woven into rockin blues.

Now we turn the corner and take a different west coast sun-soaked approach L.O.V.E. from Californisoul makes you smile as blues goes supersonic. This is the track from the album that captures the essence of the Supersonic Blues Machine. Now Stronger Together from Jonny Lang’s Signs album signals that we are back on the main highway of guitar/vocal led Rockin Blues. The album is taking us up the highways and byways of modern Blues/Rock. May not always be for the purist but that sounds for me have a freshness and the artists have an inner zeal to play music that they connect to.

With Sonny Landreth Live at Lafayette, we leave the studio and capture Blues Attack in a club. Zydeco pours from the speakers and your feet immediately tap you want to get up clap your hands and dance with Landreth. Blues-tinged with Louisiana spice and it is definitely attacking your senses for all the right reasons. Now the sound deepens with a track from Black Stone Cherry –  Black to Blue EP where they explore six covers one of which is Champagne & Reefer. The band are exploring their roots and they stomp out this classic from Muddy Waters. This is a faster louder more raucous version that gets you loving the classics again.

The closing number, the title track of Ronnie Baker Brooks latest album brings in another dimension as he captures Memphis influenced stinging blues guitar with an ultra-modern hip-hop from guest Al Kapone. Proving that Rockin’ The Blues is not trapped in heritage, theme park mode as you listen to this and the other thirteen tracks this is contemporary music. Lyrics with something to say about today. This is music that moves you.

Yet, the album does have a place in my collection. Having listened to the album not once or twice but often, it has become what do I fancy listening too? I know Rockin’ The Blues will entertain, provide variation and above all every number is a winner in its own right. We have title tracks, favourite tracks, those moments that capture the essence of a guitarist or singer moved and shaped by the blues.

Sometimes, compilation albums let you own. They do not have a sense of purpose. Rockin’ The Blues purpose is simple. A collection of tracks that mixes the breadth and depth of blues that rocks.

Tell The Truth is an autobiographical tour-de-force through the life and times of an archetypal Texas blues legend with all the highs and lows that inevitably accompany this time-honoured path. Lance Lopez has been on a slow, steady climb up the mountain to the blues-rock hall of heavyweights for the last decade, and this album declares his arrival.

Lance Lopez has a voice that lets you know he’s walked the walk, and his smoky tenor has grown more gravely and passionate with the years, then you remember, he was brought up by the likes of Bobby “Blue” Bland, Buddy Miles, Johnny Taylor, and Lucky Peterson. Lance started playing professionally at the age of 14 in bars and clubs in and around New Orleans, joining up with soul great Johnny Taylor when he was just 17, then becoming Lucky Peterson’s band leader at 18, and eventually joining the Buddy Miles Express. He’s lived the life every day since, and you can feel every mile of the road on this album.

The path he has walked has not been an easy one, and even with mentors and friends like Billy Gibbons and Johnny Winter, that road is long and fraught with the necessity of the literally thousands of clubs, endless nights, low wages, and long travels – all of which leads to the many temptations that make for distractions to get one through the day. Lance Lopez, again, was mentored by the best, and that means that along with the priceless lessons in the musical life from legends like Buddy Miles, also came lessons in drink, drugs, late nights, the ravages of road food, and that side of the life that has broken so many. With the grace of good faith, friends, and family, Lance has seen it through to a healthier, happier side.

Defining his solo sound on Tell The Truth expect loads of his famous hard-edged gritty guitars, lovingly parsed and layered throughout, but there’s also a powerful full band sound on every track with throbbing bass lines, sumptuous piano and organ, wicked blues harp, thunderous drums, and Lopez’s industrial strength vocals across the whole of this outstanding song set.

Tell The Truth is above all a working-class blues rock record. Songs like “Cash My Check” and “Never Came Easy” look at life as it’s being lived, in an honest and forthright fashion. Then there are the more harrowing tales of life’s travails and temptations to be found on “High Life” and “Down To One Bar.” Even when he’s covering John Lee Hooker on an incendiary reading of “Mr. Lucky,” this is a fiercely personal record, and Lopez spares himself not one bit as he lays down life as he’s seen and lived it. Lopez has seen has demons, stared them down, and come out on the other side.

Produced and recorded over the last three years by Fabrizio Grossi in Los Angeles, this album clearly shows that Lopez has absorbed everything he’s heard, and the lessons of everyone he’s had an opportunity to share songs and stages within the last few years. Trading verses with singers such as Warren Haynes and Walter Trout, trading solos with Eric Gales, Robben Ford, Steve Lukather, and the aforementioned Mr. Gibbons has certainly served Lance well.

The album hits the ground in fourth gear, and it never looks back. The grooves are a mile wide and hit like a sledgehammer. And while there is great guitar, as you’d expect, all over the record, Lopez never overplays. There’s a high-octane reading of John Lee Hooker’s “Mr. Lucky” that sees the sound and style of the Texas legend being updated with some extra horsepower, and a barreling rhythm section. “The Real Deal” is the Lopez manifesto, and one of the cornerstones of this record.  The album’s title track closes out the set, and it’s a massive piece of rock with a funkiness that won’t be ignored. A great album by any measure, regardless of how it may get labelled. Blues-rock? Hell yeah. Rock? Got it covered. The blues? It’s in everything Lance Lopez does. Join the journey With Supersonic Blues Machine Californisoul. Following on from 2016 debut album West of Flushing South of Frisco we continue the sonic journey with Californisoul.  Thirteen tracks with special guests adding to the heat and excitement on five numbers is a journey you will want to be part of as Californisoul  Comes Alive On Supersonic Blues Machine’s New Album. The concept behind the title and album, “CALIFORNISOUL! That’s exactly what it is. It’s the missing soundtrack to a summertime drive from Los Angeles to San Francisco in 1971!” says Fabrizio Grossi.

 Supersonic Blues Machine is three musicians who definitely know how to create a storyboard of music that shapes the carefully crafted lyrics. They comprise Lance Lopez (guitars/vocals/songwriter), Fabrizio Grossi (bass, producer, songwriter), and Kenny Aronoff (drums). They want to have a party of a trip so have invited some friends, and for Californisoul, who is joining Californisoul? Robben Ford. Billy F. Gibbons, Eric Gales, Steve Lukather and Walter Trout.

If you are expecting traditional electric based blues from Supersonic Blues Machine, disappointment awaits you. BUT, if you are looking for exceptional grooves digging deep into the vein of the blues extracting the essence and weaving a new road to tread your blues shoes then you are in for a fun ride.  The opening track is full of sunshine and genuine warmth, I Am Done Missing You. Yes, they are back with a follow-up album that builds on the debut with music that charms and endears. A blending of vocals that adding the tension to the rhythms and adds a sting in the tail to the guitar. An opening number that pulls you onboard pumped with excitement at what the rest of the album will unveil.

Foot stomping swirling blues introduces us to Robben Ford’s guitar connecting with Lance’s vocals. Somebody’s Fool has a rocky edge that has been smoothed by the instrumentation and luscious backing vocals the energy is contained as Robben’s guitar stings in a solo confirming that one thing is for sure no-one is a fool for getting on board this journey.

Continuing with tracks with a guest Billy F. Gibbons joins the party on Broken Heart. This is a gigantic rocking and rolling curve in the road get on board the guitar is dirty and the oily rag of a rhythm section is keeping us on the road driving forward for the fun of the ride. Champagne is the perfect accompaniment to this number because none of us wants a Broken Heart.

Eric Gales guitar sound is distinct adding a powerful punch to the journey as the Elevate takes on a swooping flyover on route to San Francisco. The speed is gathering the wheels are burning up the miles with a sharp stinging fulsome guitar from Gales. The backing vocals curl and pull the guitar and connect the vocals with a party that is full on assertive and loud. Phew, that is a road you want to explore again.

The fourth guest guitarist is Steve Lukather as he and the band explore Hard Times. Kenny Aronoff’s drums add a hardened edge to a number that takes us into the second half of the album. Last but not least is Walter Trout. The instantly sweet note filled tone and texture of Trout’s guitar fills the speaker. The intro to What’s Wrong you just want to go on and on. Then the vocals pick up a perfect duet of emotions are amalgamated as they ask what is wrong with my blues? Absolutely nothing.

The seven tracks delivered by the band are the glue that makes the journey work. The Pit Stops, the viewing points of interest on this supersonic blues journey we are exploring on Californisoul. The trio of Lopez, Aronoff and Grossi capture the swirling dust and grit of the road combining this rawness with the magic of their personal interpretation of the blues. Fabrizo Grossi writer of lyrics and bassist delving deep into the grooves that adds the rhythmic poetry of this road trip.  The spirit of the Supersonic Blues Machine is captured in L.O.V.E. we are now travelling in the same direction the music is taking us. This is an album where the musical tones and textures change reflecting the changing scenery on a road trip. The funkiness of the machine is captured on The Stranger, once again the judicious use of backing vocals add so much to the seventies backdrop of the album. Closing out the album with This Is Love, chatting opening reflecting back to gospel blues and back to communal singing full of vigour and hope. The track combines blues with rhythmic beats and a spicing from a reggae groove hitting the blue sweet note they are looking for throughout the journey we have joined them on. We are left feeling upbeat with the Supersonic Blues Machine.

Without the skills and clear approach from the principal band delivering the remaining tracks giving a consistency a firm grounding to Californisoul the album could have missed its mark. Thankfully it did not this is so much more than a compilation of a band with guests. It is a coherent journey through music and lyrics with Lance Lopez vocal prowess the key to keeping the thirteen tracks on a road with a clear sense of purpose and direction. We are never taken to a backwater or miss our turning. The Satnav of music power has been set to ensure the styles may vary, the approach may be different. But the journey is clear to get from Los Angeles to San Francisco with blues-infused soulfulness.

Californisoul is full of confidence the trio know they have the power to add soul to your blues. The guests are the spice in the mix adding new tones and textures. It is the Supersonic Blues Machine that are in full control on this musical journey of Californisoul.  As Fabrizio Grossi says, “Lots of people have been saying to me ‘why does Supersonic Blues Machine always bring guests around? You guys can stand your own ground’, and there are three answers to that: 1) we’re all super friends and we’re having a blast, 2) most of them don’t give lessons and for us it’s only way to learn their secret “ways”, and three because the inspiration and the challenge they bring to the table!” We are as the band described, being taken back to 1971 immersed in a soundtrack on a drive from Los Angeles to San Francisco.  Sit back, turn up the volume enjoy an exuberant modern blues with twists and turns that any great journey will always take you to the unexpected.

Bassist/Producer Fabrizio Grossi is joined by Lance Lopez on guitar and vocals and drummer Kenny Aronoff. Added to this powerful hub are guests that all bring a special style and interpretation to the blues.
The first two tracks introduce the heart of Dr Z, opening with Miracle Man with its blues infused opening and a burst of harp the vocals then kick in as the tempo builds and you just have to join in with the clapping. With its opening chant you are taken deep into the roots of America’s history raw hot and swampy southern rock I Ain’t Fallin Again is both melodic and hypnotic. Throughout the album the trio that is the backbone of the album deliver songs that work in context of the guest they have on board the Dr Z journey taking us West Of Flushing South of Frisco.

Third track Running Whiskey ringing with guest Billy Gibbons’ vibe, a vitality that pours into your ears with the heat and intensity of hot whiskey. The combo of stinging guitars and vocals from Billy adds the feel of ZZ Top to the Party that Is Dr Z Presents Super Sonic Blues Machine. Tempo changes along with the signature style of Warren Haynes steps in with his delicious Southern Rock guitar playing, he is and always will be the Remedy. Recognize the name, you should as he is at the heart of the Gov’t Mule sound, and longtime guitarist with The Allman Brothers Band and his solo work. Who else puts in an appearance with their guitars? Chris Duarte changes the tonal texture with his Texan blues-rock guitar playing – That’s My Way, this is a track that is done Chris’s way with guitar so sharp you can hear the strings vibrate as they cut through the musical backdrop. Next up on the guest roster is Eric Gales, with Nightmares and Dreams as a child prodigy I am positive his musical career has been both, this is a track that is guitar-led and driven with the power of the six-string searing through and dominates. The domination is not about noise and speed it is the subtle mixing of vocals and guitar and layers of sound and variation in tempo as the track develops and as the urgency becomes heightened the guitar follows. Then there is the wailing, howling blues guitar that is the spirit that drives Walter Trout on Can’t Take It Anymore with the accompaniment of keyboard playing that winds itself around the guitar and Walter’s vocals this is a track that is dripping in emotions. The notes are wrung out, stretched out as the lead breaks augment the lyrics with raw open emotions. The last of the guest guitarist plays a slower number full of reflection as Robben Ford sings Let’s Call It A Day a gentle beat as the lyrics explore the ending of a relationship. The guitar work is spot on every time blues with swashbuckling style.

West of Flushing South of Frisco an exploration of the emotive power of the guitar, vocals and the working of the instruments to create an array of tonal textures, emotional shapes. This is blues that rocks gently in the breeze and then howls like a hurricane. Sometimes in a rush other times laid back exploring the power of the six-strings. This album keeps on giving no wonder with so many special guests at the party.

It happened in 2012, Texan guitarist-singer-songwriter Lance Lopez was planning a visit to Los Angeles to record a new album and producer Fabrizio Grossi suggested they hook up and work on some ideas. The following whirlwind day and a half in the studio resulted in three songs which became the foundation of an exciting new project before they knew it. With a prolific career as a producer, mixer and bass player Fabrizio has worked with some of the finest musicians around today pulling into an array of eclectic styles, from Steve Vai to Tina Arena, Nina Hagen to Alice Cooper as well as Glenn Hughes, Joe Bonamassa, Leslie West, Zakk Wylde, the list is endless.

Supersonic Blues Machine isn’t just a band; it’s a mood, a comradeship, a melting pot of ideas with like-minded people bringing their own unique talents to create something with feeling that is very organic. “I was thinking of all the people we know and thought, how about putting together something like The Who or The Rolling Stones used to do in the early 70s” he adds, “they would put together a record and bring all of their friends on board, I thought that would be cool. Bringing back the spirit of camaraderie between musicians.”

Before the name, before the album, entwined circles of friendship and respect began cooking up the music storm that was to become Supersonic Blues Machine.
Before Supersonic Blues Machine even existed as it is, the seeds began to be sewn from a hook up with Billy F. Gibbons, “I was telling Billy about my work with Lance” explains Fabrizio before excitedly adding the ZZ Top legends response was “‘Oh, you know Lance? He’s fantastic, I’ve known him since he was a little kid, you two should seriously consider working on something together.’” Add into the mix drummer Kenny Aronoff thanks to Toto’s Steve Lukather. Aronoff brought with him the experience of working with a huge collection of artists such as John Mellencamp, Smashing Pumpkins, Meat Loaf, Brandon Flowers, John Fogerty, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Joe Cocker amongst a host of others.

Debut album West of Flushing, South of Frisco is a sprawling and emotional journey that has an emphasis on peace, hope, forgiveness and empowerment. Grossi said, “We could have done a record that was jam-packed of famously random guests, but we didn’t want to do that that’s not the idea.”

More friends started to feel the vibe; with tracks being added featuring the wealth of talent among friends. Warren Haynes, Gov’t Mule main man and former Allman Brothers Band, features on Remedy. , and next up was guitarist Warren Haynes. Then joining the mix Tennessee guitar virtuoso Eric Gales can turn his hand to dazzling effect to a number of genres and the pair first worked together with funk father George Clinton on a cover of Hendrix Voodoo Child back in 2001. Playing on the album Nightmares And Dreams.

Eric long time fan of Walter Trout contacted Marie after his liver transplant and was back playing guitar do you fancy joining in the fun. I said ‘hey Marie, I’m doing this thing, and I would really like to see if we could get Walter to play with us.’” Within 5 mins, Walter called back and said “are you fucking shitting me, I’ll bring the guitar.” A few months later they were in the studio recording Can’t Take it No More.

Chris Duarte has been friends with Lance with a long time and started to show interest in working with the Supersonic family and immediately started sending ideas to and forth with the others which became That’s My Way. When it came to subtle jazz-rock maestro Robben Ford, who collaborated on Let’s Call It A Day the final piece slotted it magnificently.

The winding exploration through the album takes you through different emotions, themes and tones and when Lance himself takes on the lead vocals some of those are profound and some are pure foot to the floor stomp from the bar room rocking of Bone Bucket Blues to the opener Miracle Man which is a twist on the theme from Beyoncé’s Single Ladies and the even more sad “Gold-digger/Free loaders” attitude fortified by Reality trends TV shows. “If you read between the lines, the stereotype: the guy is the dog and the girl gets the short end of the stick, but that isn’t always the case, especially in LA, where there’s a lot of great decent guys out there where but, one has ever given these guys a voice…well we just did, in our “gospelly” type of way.”

The album has moments that come from a dark place and a very personal part of Fabrizio life, he lost his birth mother aged 11 and was growing resentful of God and all related to him. “Around 15-16, I got curious and involved with readings about Aleister Crowley ,The Golden Dawn , Magic or sort, he offers, “then weird things started happening which affected me quite a bit. Even though the whole “dark” infatuation, phased out by the time I was 18/19, it took me a really long time to get rid of the negative vision of matters” and it was this that fed into I Ain’t Falling. Let It Be is about the power of forgiveness and regardless of what an individuals’ background is.

Album closer Whatchagonnado is about what Jesus would say if he came back around and talked to people right now. “We’re not a Christian band, we don’t endorse any specific belief, other than what works for you” asserts Fabrizio, “but it seems that everybody embraces this figure and builds his own agenda with it, but how would Jesus really react if he would come back and see all of his teaching twisted around? And we did that with our funky mould.”

West of Flushing, South of Frisco is a reminder of an era that embraced collaborations, one that shared a vision and shared moments, both good and hard, one that put every ounce of their experiences into it, its bleeds emotion but is an uplifting and powerful listen. Now that the Supersonic Blues Machine has begun its journey, there’s a lot more to experience from it.
