About The Album

It would be easy to call Shockwave Supernova a “masterpiece” or “the last word on guitar” from the world’s most commercially successful solo guitar performer. Satch, however, sees it much more personally. He has consistently advanced the artistry of the instrument; an effort he dedicated himself to on 18th September, 1970, the day his idol Jimi Hendrix died.

CD Review: Joe Satriani ~ Shockwave Supernova

album-hr

Joe Satriani
Shockwave Supernova
Sony Music –Release Date Friday 24th July 2014

Opening with the title track the drumming combined with Joe’s guitar spins and cascades you deep into the swirling energy of a Supanova as the shockwave of pleasure stirs up your music vibe. This is an album where the notes and the shaping of tone tell the tale there is no need for words as colours, shapes and forms develop in your musical mind whilst the beat unfolds. Joe Satriani is a troubadour of the guitar with the notes collected together and spat out in a way that forms the poetry. This is a rock album full of textures twists and turns it is where contemporary collides with classic on Crazy Joey the guitar is more harpsichord and baroque than rock, then in comes the pounding rhythm section with the bass from Bryan Beller and the drumming beat provided by Marco Minnenann creating between them pure electric guitar thrills and we are rocking, then harpsichord guitar again; it is like travelling through time and space. Your consciousness opens up and realities fade away. The sound hits you with a surging wall of electric energy as the tempo picks up and you are twisting and turning through the clouds of time and space as if On Peregrine Wings. If a raptor wrote rock this is how they would want to be perceived, through the harmonies between Satriani and Mike Kenelly on keys. The upbeat melodic flow of San Fransico Blue is immaculate with its recurring riffs and licks that make you want to party with its feel good narrative or if partying is too energetic after the adventures of the first half of the album it works just as well sat back and relaxing as the music shapes your mood; you can create the story to suit your mood it is time-out zone from space and Sci-fi. The theme is soon re-established with the stylish Keep On Movin’ the purity of the guitar over the drums is like seeing the sun through the cloud and mists that have been obscuring vision and knowledge.
For me the track that distills, hones and captures the beauty of Joe Satriani is Butterfly and Zebra; with its gentle uber-melodic opening and the notes shine through with perfect harmony that is reflected in the simple piano accompaniment. It is a track that absorbs you taking you away from noise and distractions a short but perfectly formed mode that hints at what might have been if Hendrix was alive today.
The closing track brings fruition to our journey through the word of Satriani’s guitar as we say Goodbye Supanova. I still do not understand astrophysics but the power of composition needle sharp orchestration and arrangements have taken me deep into my imagination on a marvelous journey through space over fifteen tracks that made interesting and varied stopping off points.
This is an album that both rocks your songs off and massages the hairs on the back of your neck into an electro-magnetic orgasmic frenzy. Supernova is out of this time and dimension and crawling back into reality is just too mundane so just fall back in by playing the album on repeat until you can see Joe Satriani live!

Recorded late last year at Skywalker Sound in Lucas Valley, CA, Satriani assembled the dynamic trio of world-class musicians who had recently been part of his global tour; renowned keyboardist and guitarist Mike Keneally, a veteran of several Satch outings and recordings; along with drumming whiz Marco Minnemann and bass extraordinaireBryan Beller. “I couldn’t have asked for a better band to help bring these songs to life,” says Satriani.

Recently, during the final performance of his two-year Unstoppable Momentum tour, Satriani had an epiphany; he found himself, “playing the guitar with my teeth an awful lot. I thought, ‘Why are you doing this?’ It’s as if something else, or somebody else, was driving me to do it.” Satriani seized upon this moment of self-realisation as the springboard and creative centre for his alter ego “Shockwave Supernova,” the outlandish and extroverted ‘performance side’ of the normally shy and reserved guitar virtuoso. With this new persona as partner, Satriani launched his wildly ambitious 15th solo album, Shockwave Supernova.

In a creative and engaging alternative venture, Satriani, a lifelong science fiction fan, has reached out to the future, through the medium of animation. Finally recognizing the on-stage symmetry with his alter ego allowed Satriani to also take a risk on this particular style of storytelling. He says, “Guitarist Ned Evett and I have created an animated series called Crystal Planet. The actual Crystal Planet is our very own Earth, set billions of years in the future. The hero of the show uses music generated by a unique electric guitar to travel through time while the show’s characters struggle to preserve the future and past of humankind.” More information on Crystal Planet and how and where fans will view the series will be coming shortly.

Shockwave Supernova Release date Friday 24th JUly

Legendary guitarist, JOE SATRIANI, announces plans to release his 15th solo studio album, Shockwave Supernova, on 24th July, making him one of the first to utilise the new “Friday, Global Release Day” for music.

It would be easy to call Shockwave Supernova a “masterpiece” or “the last word on guitar” from the world’s most commercially successful solo guitar performer.

The album also sees Satriani once again joining forces co-producer and engineer John Cuniberti. Satch and Cuniberti share production on Shockwave Supernova, as they have on numerous albums – their shared history dates back to the guitar star’s 1986 debut album, Not Of This Earth and its follow-up, the platinum-selling, critically acclaimed,Surfing with the Alien.

Minnemann and Beller handle the bulk of Shockwave Supernova’s rhythmic duties, with the exception of four cuts – the driving “Keep On Movin’,” full of wondrous Satch guitar wizardry and Keneally’s playful piano, “In My Pocket,” a deliciously greasy, souped-up take on Swing, along with “Crazy Joey” (a deliriously effervescent romp) and “Scarborough Stomp” (a relentless upbeat rocker) – find Satriani joined by another powerhouse rhythm section: the esteemed drummer Vinnie Colaiuta (whose work includes the likes of Frank Zappa, Sting, Paul Simon, among others) and Jane’s Addiction bassist Chris Chaney (whose resume includes Alanis Morrisette, Celine Dion and Rob Zombie, to name a few).

Joe Satriani – “Just The Facts”

Joe Satriani is the world’s most commercially successful solo guitar performer, with six gold and platinum discs to his credit (including one more gold award for the debut album by his band Chickenfoot), and sales in excess of 10 million copies. His forthcoming 15th studio album, Shockwave Supernova (due out 24th July 2015), is already being hailed as yet another creative breakthrough – this for a guitarist who has routinely topped guitar magazine polls since the release of his first full-length album, Not Of This Earth, in 1986.

Since September 18, 1970 (the day his idol Jimi Hendrix passed away), Satriani has dedicated himself to the artistry of instrument. While still a teenager in his hometown of Westbury, New York, he taught guitar to another budding six-string hopeful, Steve Vai. A few years later, Satriani moved to San Francisco and played guitar in a popular new wave band, The Squares, and briefly joined The Greg Kihn Band before the release of Not Of This Earth.

Satriani’s reputation was already growing in guitar circles – along with Vai, some of his other students were Metallica’s Kirk Hammett and Testament’s Alex Skolnick – but in 1987, he broke through to the masses with his second studio full-length, Surfing With The Alien, a massive seller (it hit No. 29 on the Billboard 200) that included the radio hits “Satch Boogie” and the title track. The success of that album caught the attention of Mick Jagger, who asked Satriani to be his lead guitarist on his first-ever solo tour, in 1988.

As a live performer, Satriani has toured the world with each new release (his last concert tour for 2013’s Unstoppable Momentum saw the guitarist touch down in 32 countries). In 1993, he joined Deep Purple as a temporary replacement for Ritchie Blackmore during a Japanese tour. In 1996, Satriani founded the multi-guitarist traveling experience called G3, which has seen him share stages with Vai, Eric Johnson, Yngwie Malmsteen, Robert Fripp, among others. And starting in 2009, Satriani traversed the globe again as a member of Chickenfoot. The all-star band (which also includes singer Sammy Hagar, former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith) has issues two albums, their debut and 2011’s follow-up, Chickenfoot III.

Satriani’s solo discography includes a host of classics, including 1989’s Flying In A Blue Dream, The Extremist from 1992, Is There Love In Space? (2004) and 2010’s Black Swans And Wormhole Wizards. His 15 Grammy nominations have been for songs such as “Always With Me, Always With You,” “The Crush Of Love,” and “Summer Song,” as well as full albums like Surfing With The Alien, The Extremist and Super Colossal.

Satriani has appeared in motion pictures such as Christopher Guest’s 2006 release, For Your Consideration, and the 2011 Brad Pitt starrer, Moneyball. Through the years, he has designed and endorsed guitars, amplifiers and effects pedals for Ibanez, Marshall and Vox. His JS Series of guitars through Ibanez has been one of the company’s most popular and consistent sellers.
