Twenty-Five Years Touring Ian Siegal Performs Tonight

Ian Siegal 2wenty5ive Years touring reaching a Pinnacle tonight at The Convent near Stroud. Ian Siegal has been on the road for Twenty Five years, the format may change, solo, trio or the current four-piece band he delivers music that defies capturing in a box it flies with integrity, style enthralling the audience.

Twenty-Five Years Touring Ian Siegal Tonight The ConventIan Siegal tonight was on fire he was full of Siegal magic full of charismatic energy and the evil twisting of words fell from his lips like pure gold as blues melted into country and reform as Rock n Roll. The guitar of choice tonight was a Gibson. Opening the night was an old favourite guitar, his old Harmony as he opened with The Skinny the lead from  Joel Fisk was a fabulous introduction to this young guitarist who for this tour is stepping into the boots of Dusty Ciggar a difficult slot to fill. Tonight Joel more than stepped up to the mark fitting in and shaping his guitar to complement Ian’s guitar work and vocals. The rhythm section Dutch duo of bassist Danny Van’t Hoff and drummer Raphael Schwiddessen; who are the platform that lets Ian fly away with the songs that tonight he is playing all written or co-written. Celebrating twenty-five years tonight is all about the frontman Ian Siegal and he is enjoying every moment as we listen once again to new and old favourites.

The tunes came thick and fast as Better Than Myself, became I Am The Train an award-winning number that takes you on a journey with Siegal in total control of the music and the band whose timing punctuated the tone, shape and pace of the train journey. The collective power and intensity for an audience who is totally immersed in the music, the intensity deepened with every song and tonight’s version of Mortal Coil was simply immense.

The set was the most emotionally poignant set that I have ever witnessed, this was Ian exploring his own music full of Rock n Roll pizzazz that makes him entertaining live music that rolls with energetic tensions as the clever lyrics are spat out, and smoothed over. He is amusing, witty and his perspective on the world is cuttingly sharp. The guitar weeps on Mortal Coil, the shuffle is blues plus so much more he is described by many as the best of British Blues, but for me, he is a musician that plays bloody fine music. Every number was electric, Brandy Balloon saw another Joel special lead break, and the dueling of guitars on Butter Side Up was beautiful.

Twenty-Five Years Touring Ian Siegal Tonight The ConventIn true Ian Siegal live style we were taken off-piste as Hard Pressed morphed into a celebration of Prince’s Sign Of The Times flowing into The Revelator where John The Baptist became the Backdoor Man.  This was as ever clever works so fine with the immaculate timing that keeps the shape of the original number whilst exploring the other numbers. The encore was demanded and a solo version of The Fear ensued, a beautifully crafted number with lyrics that connects deep within your soul written with Kris Kristoffenson in mind and delivered by Ian with hints of country and the vocal depths of Johnny Cash. Closing with Falling On Down, the band ensured there was only one reaction not falling down with delight but standing up, the standing ovation was a first at The Convent and not the last for Ian Siegal on this tour.

With live music timing and stage presence creates the mood of the music turning live music into something very special and tonight every ingredient went into the mixing bowl and a superb night was created, one we will remember and talk about the night we heard Ian Siegal and his band at the Convent.

From his lead breaks, rhythm guitar, Ian Siegal 2wenty5ive Years touring reaching a Pinnacle tonight. Ian, was definitely on top form tonight, and it doesn’t come any better than this. The review of the night can be captured in a single word Brilliant!!!

Ian Siegal 2wnty5ive The Collection

Ian Siegal 2wnty5ive The Collection is a three CD boxed set celebrating twenty-five years of professional touring. Accompanying the recordings  is a book with an opening biography written by Tom Russel, MoJo Magazine, Classic Rock and more, he understands the music and gets underneath the skin of the music. Into the mix are a selection of photographs that epitomise the spirit, soul and moods that are Ian Siegal on tour. Whilst the lyrics, once again confirm the poetry inherent in the songs written by a wordsmith who mixes his metaphors, whilst misquoting the Bible and plucks phrases and rhymes for the interesting corners of the lexicon of songwriters. Of the thirty-eight tracks, seven were co-written the other tracks are all written by the man himself.  The collection spans the music Ian and his various bands and collaborations have been released by Nugene Records, ten albums in total. Yes, we have the individual albums but these songs have made the cut and have been selected to celebrate, showcase and delight in the many memories we have of following Ian on the road for all or some of the last twenty-five years.

Ian Siegal 2wnty5ive The CollectionThis is the Opus Majus of an artist who whether playing solo, as a duo or with a band electric or acoustic always entertains and the box set does just that.  The collection has been put together with thought this is not  a timeline starting with earliest and ending with the latest it is a melding of tone, mood and colours that is the spectrum of country blues infused rootsy music that Ian Siegal delivers with the charm and wit of a snake oil salesman as he growls snarls and lures you into the tonally magic brew that is his distinctive work.  The albums the songs are taken from are like a staging post on the journey Ian takes us on through the music that inspires him The three albums as a trio/band Meat & Potatoes, Swagger and Broadsides, the solo album Dust, his live albums Man and Guitar and One Night and Amsterdam, Mississippi hill country inspired The Skinny, Candy Store Kid and Picnic sessions and Wayward Sons as a duo with Jimbo Matthus. We all have favourite tracks and the album that has that special place in our Siegal collection. The box collection captures every moment and wraps up our memories across the three CDs we can sit back and savour. This is a walk on the dark side with Ian Siegal, rootsy blues with country colouring as we explore the music and the journey we have travelled with a contemporary musical troubadour where Ian wanders down to the bayou, up in the hills and across the plain he is The Train and we are the passengers on a musical ride that is always exciting.

Do not be Stranger Than a Green Dog and get along to an Ian Siegal show and enjoy the music as he digs back into a back catalogue that is deep and wide and definitely a portrait of the man and his guitar. Here is to the last Twenty-Five years with Ian Siegal and looking forward to the next musical gem on the train ride.

How to score this? it is a Ten yet again a collection that will form an integral part of every fans collection and for those yet to discover Ian Siegal it his music encapsulated in a three CD Collection. You would be Hard Pressed to find a better collection and this is a trio of delights that will never be sent to Quarantine.

IAN SIEGAL ANNOUNCES 25th ANNIVERSARY TOUR AND RETROSPECTIVE COLLECTION

Ian Siegal is celebrating 25 years of touring with his band. In the Autumn, the multi-award winner will tour a program of songs drawn from his 11-album catalogue. Dates so far announced cover Austria, Netherlands and The UK (England, Scotland & Wales). He will also release a deluxe package of his most popular songs together with a book of lyrics.

Widely regarded as the most compelling and admired Blues artiste to have come out of Britain since the icons of the sixties, Siegal has been a constant on the UK and European blues scene gathering 11 British & European awards. He also has three nominations in the USA Blues Music Awards, effectively the Grammys of the Blues, and is also the only non-American to have twice scored a MOJO Blues Album of the Year. All these awards have come in the past five years, suggesting there’s a lot left in the tank!

His first professional gig with a band (the embryonic Ian Siegal Band), was in the early nineties when blues was decidedly unfashionable. Gaining a presence as a 20-year old singing the blues was not easy. Thankfully he persevered.

“You gotta pay your dues to play the blues” and pay his dues he certainly has: from busking on the streets of Berlin as a teenager to gruelling 3-hours-a-night club residencies to hair-raising treks across eastern Europe. His cv includes shows in 35 countries, guest appearances with some of the great names of the blues, and a live album recorded at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

AUSTRIA: September 24-30
NETHERLANDS: October 13-22
UNITED KINGDOM: November 8-19
Tour venues can be found on his revamped web page HERE

Ahead the anniversary tour Siegal is touring the USA & Canada in July, taking in the Kincardine, Ottawa, Tremblant and Windsor blues festivals. He will also play the Metronome Festival in Prague (alongside Iggy Pop, Foals and The Kooks), Gastroblues festival in Paks Hungary, Maryport Blues Festival and in September will be at Newark Castle to headline the Newark Blues Festival.

Jimbo and Ian fills the Tunnels with Roots of Music

Tonight The Tunnels in Bristol celebrated an evening with music that refused to be defined. It was all excellent and rooted in the experiences of folk, African, European, the Worker, the Poor and the Enslaved.  The colossus that is Ian Siegal and Jimbo Mathus hit town tonight on a tour spreading their approach to music, life and humour across Austria, Belgium, Germany, Holland, Slovenia and with eleven dates left to play.

Jimbo and Ian fills the Tunnels with Roots of Music
Words barely capture the vibe, passion and the distilled essence of Ian Siegal and Jimbo Mathus’ music; they have a deep empathy and the harmonization and flowing tonal textures send chills down your spine and connects deep in your music DNA.  Tonight opened in a traditional Ian Siegal solo gig format with the wonderful Silver Spurs from The Dust he fills the stage and then when the last note of guitar recedes and his spinning fingers still he then invites Jimbo to join him on stage and the party begins. Ian introduces the multi-talented Jimbo with a new fact that he played on the score for Finding Nemo.  The flow of conversation linked the music and wove the tradition of storytelling with roots music this was a pair of troubadours in action.  Yes, there was a set list but this was flexible as they discussed what to play next, they dipped into traditional music and songs they have written and recorded on their live album Wayward Sons, and back catalogue of Ian’s including Man & Guitar, and Picnic Sessions. It was at the recording of Picnic Sessions that this pair of musical reprobates met and the happy partnership for music lovers was formed.

Jimbo and Ian fills the Tunnels with Roots of MusicThe set list mixed gospel, Mary Don’t You Weep, Blues Charlie Patton’s, Pony Blues and Mississippi Hill Country of RL Burnside with Long Haired Doney,  Wilie Nelson Country with Crazy Soldier via Willie Nelson and Tex-Mex courtesy of the song that never has a happy ending Gallo del Ciello. We learnt about mules that they were the infertile progeny of a Horse and an Ass, Jesse James’ pistol in the possession of Jimbo’s Dad and Rosetta Patton the daughter of Charley who bought Jimbo up. His music is steeped in the traditions and folk memories of Mississippi. Ian has a passion, deep understanding for the feel of the blues in all its shades and textures and when in Mississipi recording his name Ian was difficult for the rest to get to grips with, so he got called Overseas. Yes, he is from overseas but his understanding of the music makes him a natural, hence the Talkin Overseas Pirate Blues. This was artistry the show was immense and the music rolled on as guitars changed and for some of the songs Jimbo added harp plus delicious mandolin so sweet you could taste it.  Tallahatchie, a Jimbo number with a fantastic mandolin lead break, bringing more cheers and whoops of delights from an audience that sat in and listened in delight at the power of these two on stage. Favorites were included into the set  I Am The Train, Casey Jones and Hard Times Come Again No More, weaving the storytelling, connecting with our emotions as quality folk/roots music of the people for the people should.Jimbo and Ian fills the Tunnels with Roots of Music

Tonight’s show was a tour-de-force entertaining, funny and the music sublime we were transported into a land where music ruled we were in harmony and the singing  that accompanied the duo spontaneously on Dirty Old Town an encore that left us wanting more. You can tonight they move on to The Convent in Stroud. Continue to support live music if you can’t get there the solution is watch it online via Netgig – link HERE

Ian Siegal Band, Jazz, Bristol SunshineIan Siegal Band, Jazz, Bristol Sunshine

Ian Siegal Band, Jazz, Bristol SunshineColston Hall was teeming with jazz in the foyer and a myriad of acts playing from Friday through to Sunday evening. Sunday afternoon Ian Siegal with his band entertained and thrilled the audience in The Lantern, Colston Hall. Opening with I am The Train, the show was underway this was going to be a journey through blues, rock n’ roll blending the tones to create the sound instantly recognizable as Ian Siegal at his very best. The quartet are stunning, what a combination. Ian Siegal with his vocals that growl, then lightens delivers a piercing squeal and the guitar coils around the notes and melody. Adding to this heady mix of sounds are a trio of Dutchmen; the miraculous guitar supremo Dusty Ciggaar, on bass Danny Van’t Hoff and completing the power hub of a rhythm section is Raphael Schwiddessen.

Ian Siegal Band, Jazz, Bristol SunshineIn between the numbers that flowed from across Ian’s deep and wide repertoire this afternoon we had interlude music adding fun to the proceedings with the hint of a jazz beat at times. Mortal Coil Shuffle was so highly charged with emotion, with Ian on slide on this magnificent number it is the lyrics and vocal textures that standout. Dusty on this and every track doubles the intensity with his adept manipulation of the six-strings creating layers of tone as the chords created blow your mind including the signature James Brown special licks and riffs. This short festival set had tracks that Ian always shines on including Brandy Balloon and a great rendition of the Siegal classic Early Grace. Live this track retains its poignancy and relevance it is a timeless treasure from Britain’s outstanding Blues man. This is blues that has every tonal shade stretching the genre including Hill country wonders, and rock n roll a baby of the blues family. Ian was on top form this afternoon, with his story-telling and raw wit and the trio of numbers that leaves you breathless with wonder and the dexterity, ingenuity and skill of Ian and his band; She’s Got The Devil In Her, and then Gallo del Ceilo, with Tom Russel’s lyrics shaped to suit the Tex Mex arrangement that calls for Dusty and his mighty Baritone guitar, what an outstanding tone. Then Falling on Down breathless with music that overloaded the senses with its power and variation. Ian Siegal never disappoints and this afternoon he was beyond amazing. With guitars and bass plugged straight in to the amplifiers the strings were strummed, picked and slid over to create a sound that exhilarates; guitar heaven. Ian said quite rightly, Dusty is the best guitar player on the planet whilst for me Ian continues to be the best guitar/vocalist on the circuit today.

All too soon it was encore time, with a Dylan cover, and closing the afternoon that we all wanted to go on and on; Take a Walk in The Wilderness dedicated to Big George was sung with a poignant wistfulness.

Ian Siegal out of Portsmouth via the high and oft turbulent high seas of gigging throughout U.K. and Europe; now based in Netherlands Ian Siegel brings the Southern rocking winds to Colston on a Sunday Afternoon as aort of Bristol Jazz Festival.

Nothing Wayward Music from Ian Siegal and Jimbo Matthus

Wayward Sons-

Nothing Wayward Music from

Ian Siegal and Jimbo Matthus

There are many roads in creating stand out music that gets noticed. It is a certainty that the musical furrow Ian and Jimbo are ploughing is one of them. Definitely Nothing Wayward in the Live Music from Ian Siegal and Jimbo Mathus.

Opening with Ian Siegal who gets the show underway and introduces double grammy winner and wonderful musician Jimbo Mathus. Wayward Sons,  This is a live album brimming with bonhomie of friendship, bonding over music and the joy of singing, playing guitars and a generous dusting of charismatic magic. Ian and Jimbo in the spoken interlude are a double act, with background to the songs and wit.
This is a twenty-one track album that stretches the CD’s capacity so not a moment of wonder is lost.

The songs are a selection of traditional, artful covers and songs from Ian Siegel’s Picnic Sessions where he first met Jimbo back in 2013 and from Jimbo Mathus’ back catalogue.  Opening with In The Garden, Jimbo opens with vocals and a feel of Dylan runs throughout and has a twist on connections with Paradise.   We hear that Jimbo is glad to be brought overseas and we know they are back in 2016. Then it is Ian’s turn with a Townes Van Zandt’s Heavenly Houseboat Blues, the harmonisation is closer than close the guitar strumming hits the moods and connects to Jimbo’s harp playing. Recorded on Picnic Sessions by accident as Ian was playing it and the rest of the musicians joined in and the recording was captured.

Many people may have sung this song says Jimbo, but I am positive that Jesse James from this duo has a vim and vigour, they resemble outlaws as they approach blues/American roots music with a disrespectful swagger. The outcome is a devilish turning the known into a mighty opus of musical delight.

What do you need after a ditty about Jesse James, some gospel blues which is often included in Ian’s solo sets Mary Don’t You Weep sits in the show tonight perfectly. Ian and Jimbo are a pair of wickedly godf troubadours that just love to perform live and this energy exudes through the album.  Casey Jones a tale of a brave engine driver, lives saved all wrapped up in synchronization of voices, guitars and that swagger that makes this music a zinging hum of electric energy. This like other well-trodden tracks are given a musical spring clean with a Siegal /Matthus interpretation.  These artist are definitely not lazy in their approach, as they sing Old Earl, a tale of a lazy man who didn’t crawl until the age of seventeen, a real foot tapping, make you smile number. We leave behind outlaws and progress to pirates and an interlude where Ian checks what key, only happens in the live moment. Back talking about Overseas with Talkin’ Overseas Pirate Blues, is a sea swashbuckling number.

With cheers of delight the closing number, Ewan MacColl’s, Dirty Old Town draws the album to a close not with a whimper but a musical hurrah! This album will keep us going until we can hear the duo live for ourselves in UK & Europe in Spring 2016.

You need to purchase the album and hear every track for the nuances and more. This review is a mere snippet of the quality of the album a whisper in the wind that the music leaves behind.

Multi-award winning Ian Siegal & Jimbo Mathus have redefined great music, no pigeon-holes for them it is all about lyrics and guitars shaping the mood with vocals that stir your soul, make you smile, laugh and cry.

We all collectively have to thank whom- ever it was who pressed record at Café de Noot, a venue in Hoogland, Netherlands. So this show is not relegated to a folklore memory. We know how good it was because we have a front seat in our music rooms for today and beyond.
