Twenty-Five Years Touring Ian Siegal Performs Tonight

Ian Siegal 2wenty5ive Years touring reaching a Pinnacle tonight at The Convent near Stroud. Ian Siegal has been on the road for Twenty Five years, the format may change, solo, trio or the current four-piece band he delivers music that defies capturing in a box it flies with integrity, style enthralling the audience.

Twenty-Five Years Touring Ian Siegal Tonight The ConventIan Siegal tonight was on fire he was full of Siegal magic full of charismatic energy and the evil twisting of words fell from his lips like pure gold as blues melted into country and reform as Rock n Roll. The guitar of choice tonight was a Gibson. Opening the night was an old favourite guitar, his old Harmony as he opened with The Skinny the lead from  Joel Fisk was a fabulous introduction to this young guitarist who for this tour is stepping into the boots of Dusty Ciggar a difficult slot to fill. Tonight Joel more than stepped up to the mark fitting in and shaping his guitar to complement Ian’s guitar work and vocals. The rhythm section Dutch duo of bassist Danny Van’t Hoff and drummer Raphael Schwiddessen; who are the platform that lets Ian fly away with the songs that tonight he is playing all written or co-written. Celebrating twenty-five years tonight is all about the frontman Ian Siegal and he is enjoying every moment as we listen once again to new and old favourites.

The tunes came thick and fast as Better Than Myself, became I Am The Train an award-winning number that takes you on a journey with Siegal in total control of the music and the band whose timing punctuated the tone, shape and pace of the train journey. The collective power and intensity for an audience who is totally immersed in the music, the intensity deepened with every song and tonight’s version of Mortal Coil was simply immense.

The set was the most emotionally poignant set that I have ever witnessed, this was Ian exploring his own music full of Rock n Roll pizzazz that makes him entertaining live music that rolls with energetic tensions as the clever lyrics are spat out, and smoothed over. He is amusing, witty and his perspective on the world is cuttingly sharp. The guitar weeps on Mortal Coil, the shuffle is blues plus so much more he is described by many as the best of British Blues, but for me, he is a musician that plays bloody fine music. Every number was electric, Brandy Balloon saw another Joel special lead break, and the dueling of guitars on Butter Side Up was beautiful.

Twenty-Five Years Touring Ian Siegal Tonight The ConventIn true Ian Siegal live style we were taken off-piste as Hard Pressed morphed into a celebration of Prince’s Sign Of The Times flowing into The Revelator where John The Baptist became the Backdoor Man.  This was as ever clever works so fine with the immaculate timing that keeps the shape of the original number whilst exploring the other numbers. The encore was demanded and a solo version of The Fear ensued, a beautifully crafted number with lyrics that connects deep within your soul written with Kris Kristoffenson in mind and delivered by Ian with hints of country and the vocal depths of Johnny Cash. Closing with Falling On Down, the band ensured there was only one reaction not falling down with delight but standing up, the standing ovation was a first at The Convent and not the last for Ian Siegal on this tour.

With live music timing and stage presence creates the mood of the music turning live music into something very special and tonight every ingredient went into the mixing bowl and a superb night was created, one we will remember and talk about the night we heard Ian Siegal and his band at the Convent.

From his lead breaks, rhythm guitar, Ian Siegal 2wenty5ive Years touring reaching a Pinnacle tonight. Ian, was definitely on top form tonight, and it doesn’t come any better than this. The review of the night can be captured in a single word Brilliant!!!

IAN SIEGAL ANNOUNCES 25th ANNIVERSARY TOUR AND RETROSPECTIVE COLLECTION

Ian Siegal is celebrating 25 years of touring with his band. In the Autumn, the multi-award winner will tour a program of songs drawn from his 11-album catalogue. Dates so far announced cover Austria, Netherlands and The UK (England, Scotland & Wales). He will also release a deluxe package of his most popular songs together with a book of lyrics.

Widely regarded as the most compelling and admired Blues artiste to have come out of Britain since the icons of the sixties, Siegal has been a constant on the UK and European blues scene gathering 11 British & European awards. He also has three nominations in the USA Blues Music Awards, effectively the Grammys of the Blues, and is also the only non-American to have twice scored a MOJO Blues Album of the Year. All these awards have come in the past five years, suggesting there’s a lot left in the tank!

His first professional gig with a band (the embryonic Ian Siegal Band), was in the early nineties when blues was decidedly unfashionable. Gaining a presence as a 20-year old singing the blues was not easy. Thankfully he persevered.

“You gotta pay your dues to play the blues” and pay his dues he certainly has: from busking on the streets of Berlin as a teenager to gruelling 3-hours-a-night club residencies to hair-raising treks across eastern Europe. His cv includes shows in 35 countries, guest appearances with some of the great names of the blues, and a live album recorded at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

AUSTRIA: September 24-30
NETHERLANDS: October 13-22
UNITED KINGDOM: November 8-19
Tour venues can be found on his revamped web page HERE

Ahead the anniversary tour Siegal is touring the USA & Canada in July, taking in the Kincardine, Ottawa, Tremblant and Windsor blues festivals. He will also play the Metronome Festival in Prague (alongside Iggy Pop, Foals and The Kooks), Gastroblues festival in Paks Hungary, Maryport Blues Festival and in September will be at Newark Castle to headline the Newark Blues Festival.

Ian Siegal Band, Jazz, Bristol SunshineColston Hall was teeming with jazz in the foyer and a myriad of acts playing from Friday through to Sunday evening. Sunday afternoon Ian Siegal with his band entertained and thrilled the audience in The Lantern, Colston Hall. Opening with I am The Train, the show was underway this was going to be a journey through blues, rock n’ roll blending the tones to create the sound instantly recognizable as Ian Siegal at his very best. The quartet are stunning, what a combination. Ian Siegal with his vocals that growl, then lightens delivers a piercing squeal and the guitar coils around the notes and melody. Adding to this heady mix of sounds are a trio of Dutchmen; the miraculous guitar supremo Dusty Ciggaar, on bass Danny Van’t Hoff and completing the power hub of a rhythm section is Raphael Schwiddessen.

Ian Siegal Band, Jazz, Bristol SunshineIn between the numbers that flowed from across Ian’s deep and wide repertoire this afternoon we had interlude music adding fun to the proceedings with the hint of a jazz beat at times. Mortal Coil Shuffle was so highly charged with emotion, with Ian on slide on this magnificent number it is the lyrics and vocal textures that standout. Dusty on this and every track doubles the intensity with his adept manipulation of the six-strings creating layers of tone as the chords created blow your mind including the signature James Brown special licks and riffs. This short festival set had tracks that Ian always shines on including Brandy Balloon and a great rendition of the Siegal classic Early Grace. Live this track retains its poignancy and relevance it is a timeless treasure from Britain’s outstanding Blues man. This is blues that has every tonal shade stretching the genre including Hill country wonders, and rock n roll a baby of the blues family. Ian was on top form this afternoon, with his story-telling and raw wit and the trio of numbers that leaves you breathless with wonder and the dexterity, ingenuity and skill of Ian and his band; She’s Got The Devil In Her, and then Gallo del Ceilo, with Tom Russel’s lyrics shaped to suit the Tex Mex arrangement that calls for Dusty and his mighty Baritone guitar, what an outstanding tone. Then Falling on Down breathless with music that overloaded the senses with its power and variation. Ian Siegal never disappoints and this afternoon he was beyond amazing. With guitars and bass plugged straight in to the amplifiers the strings were strummed, picked and slid over to create a sound that exhilarates; guitar heaven. Ian said quite rightly, Dusty is the best guitar player on the planet whilst for me Ian continues to be the best guitar/vocalist on the circuit today.

All too soon it was encore time, with a Dylan cover, and closing the afternoon that we all wanted to go on and on; Take a Walk in The Wilderness dedicated to Big George was sung with a poignant wistfulness.

Ian Siegal out of Portsmouth via the high and oft turbulent high seas of gigging throughout U.K. and Europe; now based in Netherlands Ian Siegel brings the Southern rocking winds to Colston on a Sunday Afternoon as aort of Bristol Jazz Festival.

Ian Siegal & Quimby – 12th May – Scala, London

maj_quimbyDark clouds and a crack of thunder did nothing to dampen the spirits of the ever lengthening queue outside Scala gigging venue conveniently placed just a few minutes walk from Kings Cross. The majority in the waiting crowd seemed to be here to listen to Quimby, who Ian describes as Art-Rock, but where were all the London fans of Ian who had the opportunity to catch this double-header of delight?

Ian Siegal with his electric band, the Dutch group Rhythm Chiefs who are the dynamic and brilliant guitarist Dusty Ciggaar, Danny van’t Hoof playing funky laid-back bass and keeping the band tight and providing perfect structure from the back drummer Rafael Schwiddessen.

This is a sublime quartet of talent who meld and deliver a sound that is full of tonal texture and lyrical depths that refused to be caged by a genre they are above that as they deliver class music. The set list was a walk through several of Ian’s albums delivered with something a little bit special, the guitar sound of Dusty who gave each track a fresh appeal, Ian Siegal Electric Band - Scala London 2104 - DSC_0324lthis is what makes listening to a band so magical as it is never the album reproduced as the artist re-interprets his own work. It was fantastic to hear again ‘Sugar Rush’, ‘The Revelator’, ‘Brandy Balloon’, ‘Kingdom Come’ tracks from Meat & Potatoes and Broadside as well as Candy Store KidI am The Train’. The track of the set was an electric version of ‘Gallo Del Cielo’, we are used to hearing this at solo shows; or on his new live album Man & Guitar; with the audience in still emotional silence as the tale unfolds. Tonight it was electric in every sense with Dusty and his baritone guitar stealing the show this fabulous song still ends with a tear in your eye as the emotions through the lyrics and the music that accompanied them who added empathy and raw emotion so that there should have been not a dry eye in the house. Unfortunately, the noisy chatter that had become so noticeable in the quieter sections become a murmuring of buzzing wasps that should have been swatted… Ian asked for quiet but we didn’t get it so no encore a real disappointment. I know most of the audience were here to see Quimby but respect costs nothing…

Quimby - Scala London 2104 - DSC_0481lQuimby, a Hungarian band formed in 1991, deliver music that can be slotted into alternative but that is a home of many who are just different. Quimby deliver musical art, sculptures of sound that build from a strong percussive base, with trumpet, keyboard, bass, guitar and a strong vocals.. a megaphone is used to great artistry as well. This is a band that is individual creating a sound that only strong musicians would have the confidence to deliver, tonight this was achieved by the collective talents of Tibor Kiss (Vocals, Lead Guitars) Livius Varga (Vocals, Percussion) Szilárd Balanyi (Keyboards, Vocals) , Ferenc Gerdesits (Drums), Ferenc Mikuli (Bass) and József Kárpáti (Trumpet). This is a band to see live as they interact with each other and the audience delivering track after track that all have a different emphasis as the instrumentation and focus is varied. Quimby - Scala London 2104 - DSC_0369lThe lyrics may have been in Hungarian, the music transcends language barriers and spoke of emotional depths, irony, joy and sorrow. I would have loved to have been able to understand the spoken interludes as the audience who could laughed and sighed as they could interact with the message.

This did not stop this gig of two halves being full of delight and when they tour UK again I will be off to see Quimby and enjoy music that is artfully sculptured so that they cross cultural and linguistic barriers with a set list full of Quimby variations of tempo, music and art.. including their take on the blues with Ventilátor blues and Turning to the blue and some of their hit Halleluja and a couple with English tiles.. I’ve got a Girl; Son of the Bitch and Nice Day – it was more than a nice night it was an evening full of music that made you sit up listen and enjoy.
