South African singer-songwriter and guitarist, Dan Patlansky, is set to the release his new studio album Perfection Kills in the UK on Friday 2nd February 2018. The album is the follow up to 2016’s critically acclaimed Introvertigo which was voted #1 BluesRock Album 2016 by Blues Rock Review.

Bluesdoodles loved the album Introvertivgo we said this and more “Introvertigo with its carefully crafted lyrics that blend urbane wit and honest observation, this is blues pertinent to today’s lifestyles, not so much whiskey and women more the corruption of power and social interaction. Ten tracks there are no fillers every number is full of strength and tonal power but there is not an off note or lyric”.

To dovetail with the release of the new album, Dan will be the special guest on Joanne Shaw Taylor’s nationwide 7-date UK tour that starts on Tuesday 7th November at Gateshead Sage. To coincide with the tour, he will release a new single Dog Day taken from the Perfection Kills album.  Dan said “There’s going to be a big emphasis on a lot of touring around the new record which I can’t wait for. November 2017 I will be touring with Joanne Shaw Taylor in the U.K and will perform the first single, Dog Day, live for the first time. March 2018 we return to U.K/Europe for the Perfection Kills album launch tour.

Check out the November UK tour dates HERE

Patlansky was nominated as one of Classic Rock magazine’s hotly tipped new artists of 2015. His album, Dear Silence Thieves received accolades and praise from the British press. He’s been voted Most Promising Male Blues Artist by Blues & Soul Magazine, and only recently has he been nominated as Best International Solo Artist at the Planet Rock Radio ‘Rocks’ Awards.

2018 Dan Patlansky UK Tour Plus New Album Perfection KillsPerfection Kills was recorded at Scherzo Productions, a recording studio in Dan’s hometown of Pretoria, South Africa. Dan chose Scherzo because he wanted to make a different sounding record and he felt it was the right studio for his vision.

Patlansky produced the album himself, something he hadn’t done in years. Says Dan, “I learnt so much working with Theo Crous who was the producer on previous two albums Dear Silence Thieves and Introvertigo. I worked on pre-production and songwriting with Theo on a couple of the tracks for Perfection Kills and applied what I learnt to the recording and production process of the album.”

Perfection Kills is all about my vision of making a record that still make the songwriting a priority as in the past, the final product delivers a far more real and organic result.”

As we said when we recently heard Dan play live in Cardiff he is – “Majestic, scintillating jaw-dropping good.”

Dan Patlansky Stunning Guitar Returns to The Globe

Dan Patlansky Stunning Guitar Returns to The Globe

Dan Patlansky Stunning Guitar Returns to The Globe

Back in Cardiff town again South African, guitar wizard, Dan Patlansky who invited Ash Wilson to join the May party as his special guest. A definite winning combination full of textured, tasty guitar that exploring the Blues.

Dan Patlansky Stunning Guitar Returns to The GlobeBy the number of Dan Patlansky T-shirts on display in the audience at The Globe; they had come to be entertained by the renowned guitar spectacular that is his trademark. Before, that Ash Wilson and his band took to the stage, to a venue that was slowly filling up. For the majority Ash was an unknown, the audience didn’t know what to expect. The result was a happy crowd, who enjoyed the opening numbers that gave justice to his debut album Broken Machine. Ash is a great performer letting the guitar and lyrics tell the story. It was a shame that the acoustic dampened the vocals. Ash did not disappoint with a rhythm section that set the shape of the blues he was displaying. On bass Steve Amadeo stepping into Roger Inniss shoes and Tristan Poole on drums. With a short strong set five songs from Broken Machine and closing with a Michael Jackson workout. Every number had persuasive listenability, with strong lyrics it is a dramatic slow blues ballad, domestic abuse through the eyes of a woman. It was the stand out moment.  The Wilson machine is definitely not broken the guitar delivering across the six strings.

The Globe was buzzing with the hum of contentment; they had heard blues shuffle, slow blues and those with a rocky edge. Now for the main event.

Dan Patlansky Stunning Guitar Returns to The GlobeIn a few words. Majestic, scintillating jaw-dropping good, describes an Patlansky tonight. Tonight was a celebration for the acclaimed album Introvertigo. On the last few nights where this album will be centre stage. AS, on his return to South Africa it is back in the studio for another helping of studio work from Patlansky. A mouth-watering prospect, along with and promising to be back this time next year with album in hand.

Back to the live music being played tonight. With a trio of immensely musicians from Hamburg, joing Dan tonight in Cardiff. Smiling, Felix Dehmel with his imaginative and stylish drumming; Johnathan Murphy with his rhythmic bass and adding chords with hidden depths on the keys Tom Gatza and supplying tasty backing vocals.  Dan Patlansky is a blues-rock plays phenomenal guitar on his trusty 1962 Dan Patlansky Stunning Guitar Returns to The GlobeFender Strat ‘Old Red’ joined tonight by a guitar specially made for Slide from California with the maker Michael Couling in the audience to hear his masterpiece played live. Bright blue and cutting a sliding dash.

Opening with a  guitar driven instrumental jam, starting quiet Drone builds, holding the audience spellbound a we all listened in silence, then wham as his he exploded with all guitar cylinders firing, with his latest single from Introvertigo; Sonova Faith. Dan never plays the guitar with just his fingers, his whole body bends into the guitar with the energy flowing into the instrument. It is a workout of mind and body and add into the mix vocals that are strong full of emotional depths. A wonderful rendition of Jimmy Reeds Bright Lights Big City, as we floated on the reworking of this classic blues number. Into this mix we heard Stop The Messin’ and Heartbeat that had the crowds whooping with delight. The slow blues, which as he says is a must on every Dan album tonight was Introvertigo’s Still Wanna Be Your Man. So Dramatic and quite beautiful, clever use of silence then the build up to add drama. The dueling with Tom on keys was just one of the many highlights from this super-talented guitarists. He is one of the most innovative on the circuit.

Dan Patlansky Stunning Guitar Returns to The GlobeWith Backbite and My Chana from the wonderful Dear Silence Thieves album be wanted more. The guitar acrobatics, use of feed back, the power of the whole guitar is no party trick it is an artistry as Dan manipulates every inch of ‘Old Red’ who obliges every time. The band came back for two extended numbers we were awestruck in the presence of a virtuoso on the fender.

Dan Patlansky’s reputation and popularity continues to grow, reflecting the talent grown out of a true infinity with the guitar. All that is left to say Thank-you Dan for the blues and come back to Cardiff very soon.

Fireworks with Joe Satriani and Dan Patlansky

- St Davids Hall - Nov 2015_0002l

- St Davids Hall - Nov 2015_0165l

Joe Satriani with Special Guest Dan Patlansky
Live at St David’s Hall, Cardiff 5th November 2015

All of the musical fireworks were let off in St David’s Hall tonight with the crackling combination of blues spangled rocket man Dan Patlansky opening the proceeding Special guest of the complete guitar firework display that is Joe Satriani. This was going to be two explosive sets and the hall was packed for the event from the front row and high up in the rafters.

Dan Patlansky - St Davids Hall - Nov 2015_0115lOpening with a formidable instrumental that set the level of guitar playing through control and the dexterity of nimble fingers across the strings and working the fret board. Drone was certainly not a droning noise it was not about stealth in the blues-influenced guitar-driven opener. We had glimpses of his back catalogue from the 20 stones album, Bring World To It’s Knees and a trio of delights form Dear Silence of Thieves the amazing album that introduced many in the UK to the glories of Dan Patlansky’s prowess and magic on his battered and worn Strat affectional known as Old Red. He thanked everyone for the support and opportunities and played the singles that have received massive air play on Planet Rock, Backbite tonight had a raw energy that was mesmerising. The music is developing as shown on the two new tracks introduced live tonight roll on 2016 a new Dan Patlansky album and full UK tour? As he closed his forty minute set with My Chana an instrumental that had the audience watching every move he made on the guitar as he played one-handed with just the fingerboard then used as a percussive instrument every piece of the guitar squealed, he discarded the strap and stretched the Strat to its very limit like a Catherine Wheel sending off musical cascades of sparkling excitement. The appetiser was delicious and we could have listened all night and he definitely had more rock/blues up his sleeve. Now for the Main event of the night.

Joe Satriani - St Davids Hall - Nov 2015_0183lThe stage lit up, the crowds cheered Joe Satriani was on the stage. Opening with a great video from Crystal Planet that was re-visited later in the set. Then the sound exploded as the title track of his latest studio album Shockwave Supernova, reverberated around the auditorium. The lights blazed and the backdrop through the night of videos, still photographs or a light show added another layer to the music. For over two hours the instrumentals developed on themes slower, faster, harder some emotional. Joe Satriani explored the albums of the past and interweaved with numbers form Shockwave Supernova so we all had the thrill of hearing the album come alive. The visual displays act as a pathway into the thoughts of Joe Satriani the composer in the thinking behind the music giving them a visual context, replacing the need for lyrics. This is contemporary classical music composed for guitars, bass, drums and keys and has movements and structures that take you on a wonderful journey. The musical adventure has Joe Satriani at its heart, the band though is superb giving a platform allowing Joe to Surf with the Aliens and Fly with his Blue Dreams. The musicianship was outstanding the interaction between everyone gave animation to the stage with a powerhouse of a rhythm section Marco Minnemum on drums, whose drum solo was awesome, bassist Bryan Beller and Mike Keneally keyboards and guitar sometimes played at the same time; and guitar duels with Joe not surprising to have virtuoso playing from Mike having played with Frank Zappa the possibilities are always going to be endless.
With eight tracks from his current album there was still room for Crazy Joe an autobiographical number with video shots of Joe from the early days until now a visual biography. The guitar did the talking the talent of Joe Satriani is immense and his concerts create an atmosphere that is spellbinding. My favourite of all the music on offer tonight from Joe is hard but there is something very, very special about Butterfly and Zebra a lovely tune that is different with its different movements and tones, it is a sonic symphony that intrigues and blazes long after the last note dies away. Another highlight was Crystal Planet in which the guitar was controlled and the video was visually intriguing from early in the set, and Satch Boogie and then the encore; two numbers that enchant, including the only track with vocals and harp from Joe, Big Bad Moon and then the stellar Surfing With The Alien performed with classic old inter-galactic proportions. If you have not heard Joe Satriani live put it on your bucket list you will not be disappointed. This is guitar playing that crosses boundaries and is full of complexity and you need to listen and enjoy the musical shapes being formed and let reality be suspended while Joe plays for you. This was a night of orchestral music that is of super-sonic proportions that defy verbal description.

About The Album

It would be easy to call Shockwave Supernova a “masterpiece” or “the last word on guitar” from the world’s most commercially successful solo guitar performer. Satch, however, sees it much more personally. He has consistently advanced the artistry of the instrument; an effort he dedicated himself to on 18th September, 1970, the day his idol Jimi Hendrix died.

About The Album and Track Listing

It would be easy to call Shockwave Supernova a “masterpiece” or “the last word on guitar” from the world’s most commercially successful solo guitar performer. Satch, however, sees it much more personally. He has consistently advanced the artistry of the instrument; an effort he dedicated himself to on 18th September, 1970, the day his idol Jimi Hendrix died.

Dan Patlansky Talking to Bluesdoodles prior to UK Album launch

poster-hr (1)A big bluesdoodles thank you Dan Patlansky for sparing time and answering my questions with candour, a laugh it was a fun chat, on the night before he flies to U.K. to launch his current album Dear Silence Thieves at The Boderline, London Monday 27th April followed by a short tour – DATES click here

1. What were your first musical influences growing up in South Africa?
Early influences were my parents Album/CD collection their music, that included Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix and the Kings BB & Albert.
Growing up in South Africa the blues was a rare thing, so it was thanks to my parents I found the blues. Old school rock was also inspiring and still continues to influence me.

2. What advice have you had that you have actually listened to?
I had very little positive advice, just told when growing up that playing the blues will not earn you a living etc. so not very encouraging! Then their was a musician in South Africa who said to me, the longer you keep playing and doing it the luckier you will be and the better chance of succeeding which was great advice and true. Also an old American bluesman said you have to really understand the blues, listen to those who influenced the people you admire; keep going back and by doing this I found Robert Johnson, Son House the early blues guys are so important.

3. Dear Silence Thieves – is being launched in UK on 27th April, as part of worldwide release. How difficult is it breaking into new music markets?
It is really difficult; like starting the South African music scene all over again’ I may be playing big theatres now in South Africa but in UK, Poland Netherlands etc. got to start at the bottom again and get people to hear and enjoy my music. It is exciting and at the same time daunting as always the worry that will there won’t be anyone at a show! There is no easy way you just have to tour and tour again to build a following it is though very exciting.

4. Dear Silence Thieves – love the story behind the title and you have made songwriting the core of the album how did this make it different from preparing your other albums?
The story of the naming of the album is dedicated to two Silence Thieves who left a venue embarrassed when an artist stopped his music and said “you two need to shut the F#@k up or get out”…
Yes I so relate to this I thought it was a South African thing but appears to be worldwide, there are lots of lovely coffee shops to chat in and there is no entrance fee.
For me the focus has always been on the guitar performance on the song, it is still a major focus. I want songs to be important so write them on acoustic guitar without all the bells and whistles. I was only prepared to go into the studio on this one when the song was right. David Z’ an American music producer, engineer, mixer and writer who has worked with many including early Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Jonny Lang said it was the right way to do it and it really makes sense the song is king as he said would you prefer a great guitar solo and poor song or great guitar and great song… I will be taking this approach in the future; it was such an enjoyable way of doing an album and will be doing it this way from now on.

5. Do the tracks have personal meaning and have you a favourite track?
Hold On is my personal favourite, I am a sucker for the slower ballady stuff, it was written about getting older just how each year goes quicker, life’s running away is concerning me later. CLICK HERE to LISTEN
Then there is the single Backbite which has that rocky power so favoured by many.

6. What do you see as the future (plans, projects, etc.) for Dan Patlansky during 2015 and beyond?
Well I fly tomorrow to the U.K. for a two and half week tour, then back to South Africa. Then some more new European countries, Poland, Germany and Netherlands, time back touring in South Africa and back as special guest for Joe Satriani’s U.K. tour in November which is exciting as further exposure in larger venues and cities hopefully a great jumpstart in raising my profile in the U.K. Then January 2016 back in the studio for a new album. In between the touring need to find time to write as at the moment I have zero material!

7. Dan Patlansky is a new name for many so tell us a bit about your Guitars and style?

I am a Fender Stratocaster player, I have an old 1962 which I have been touring with for years, it feels like an extension of my body and the sound is fantastic. I use heavier gauge 12-54 strings; and a pedal board that is small in the scheme of things with 5 pedals including a Wah wah, reverb and one for the blues. I use Dr Z Amplification, Buddy Whittington got me interested in these, my rig is small no multi amps the sound for me is great. Bit too loud sometimes, I love it loud, always have to compromise with front of house and turn down the amplifier, so the first few rows of the audience are not blown away and people stay to hear the music. I am a big fan of Phillip Sayce and his style and approach to the blues rock scene

8. When not playing your own music who do you listen to?
Well it depends on my mood, when it is the blues Albert Collins, the Kings and currently the quality of the songs on the new Beck album it is not blues or a guitar album but full of songs that are incredible.

9. If you were putting together the perfect band with members from across the years (dead or alive) who would you have playing?
Drums : John Bonham
Bass : Alphonso Johnson
Guitars: Derek Trucks and Philip Sayce
Vocals : Greg Allman
Keys: Kofi Burbridge
and…. Jimi Hendrix Front House Soundman.
