MARCH/APRIL UK & EUROPEAN TOUR

Krissy Matthews Live Album and Touring 2017Krissy Matthews Band are set to embark on a UK and European tour in March and April to celebrate the release of their first live album “Live At Freak Valley”.

Released by Proper Records on Friday 14th April 2017, the live album was recorded at the Freak Valley Festival in Siegen, Germany on May 27, 2016. It really catches the adrenaline and pure excitement of the band in all their glory.

“Too many bands release “live records” but half of it is over dubbed in the studio and the f*** ups are erased,” says Matthews. “On Freak Valley you get the real deal. No overdubs.”

Continues Matthews: “I remember our Freak Valley show very well. It was the first show myself, Sam and Max did as a three piece. It was the first time I performed at a major “stoner rock” festival, and it was the first gig of our 2016 summer festival tour. We walked off stage smiling and had a fabulous time. Over the past twelve years of touring since I was 12, more and more fans have been asking me when I was going to release a live album. I knew it had to be around the corner. When I heard the recording of this show, I knew it was the one.”

The three bonus tracks on the album – Hit The Rock, Roadsick Blues and Bubbles And The Seven Phones, were recorded live from a concert Matthews performed at one of his favourite venues – Gerd’s Juke Joint in Joldelund, Germany during Spring 2016.

Originally from Oxford, Krissy’s band has often been described as an exciting, high octane, power rock trio steeped in blues roots. 24 year old Matthews has performed at some of Europe’s most iconic music venues including Ronnie Scott’s, Loreley, Tanzbrunnen and Festa Avante. He’s also opened for many high profile recording artists at the top of their game including Joe Bonamassa, Toto, Gregg Allman and Tedeschi Trucks Band.

which will go live on September 16th.

A decade into the band’s career, Solas marks a significant turning point for The Answer as they turned inwards to their culture, musical heritage and deep-rooted sense of ‘Irishness’. The album is a hugely varied body of work encompassing elements of their Celtic background as well as their renowned trademark guitar attack.

Opening with the dark hypnotic drum beat of the title track ‘Solas’, a brooding rock anthem that builds to a climactic release with an explosive and almost operatic choral finale, the album showcases the band’s love of Irish harmony; the combination of mandolins and Celtic choral arrangements suspend time on the harmonious ‘Thief Of Light’ while ‘In This Land’ summons an epic resolve and demonstrates an atmospheric turning point in the band’s sound.

Not turning their back on their blues-filled rock anthems, ‘Demon Driven Man’ is perfect rock’n’roll fare, but it is the epic ‘Battle Cry (Seo An La Mo Laoch Mo Ghra)’, a six-minute call to arms featuring elements of Celtic music, a Gaelic vocal chant, windswept rock and even thunderous Samba rhythms, which best epitomises the old and new of The Answer.

Having gone back to their roots and rediscovered their inner selves Solas is an honest and brave album that panders to no label, to no media framework and to no rules. It is a record that bears the scars and soul of four talented men from Northern Ireland; sometimes troubled but seeking creative liberation.

Now firmly embarked upon a new journey with a roaring fire inside, The Answer will be bringing their fierce Irish rock’n’roll to the UK this November.

The Sky Won’t Fall proclaims Stevie Nimmo

The Sky Won’t Fall proclaims Stevie Nimmo

The Sky Won’t Fall proclaims Stevie Nimmo

The combination of powerful lyrics, blues guitar of such purity it makes you weep and a Nimmo’s vocals we can be sure The Sky Won’t Fall when there is music of this magnitude being created.

Opening with sonic creaks and squeals, and actually with a flick of a switch and feedback it works – Why? Your attention is gained and then a mighty riff. The world is fine when Stevie Nimmo’s music is coursing through your veins. Chains Of Hope may be broken in the opening rock blues number but as he sings the Sky Won’t Ever Fall. Even Chicken Licken of the children’s tale would cease to worry about the sky falling down no need to dash off to a King he would just sit back and let the resplendent music cascade over him. This is music that connects and feels like an old friend from the first note; this is music fixed deep in your soul. There is nothing gentle about the vocals this is a voice that has travelled and overcome adversity and the experience shapes and forms the emotion of blues from the heart. There is no way of ignoring Roll The Dice Again in a review it is slick and slides out of the speakers seeping deep into the soundtrack that follows you around.

The power of the blues is always in the song. Without the song however good the musicianship there is nothing. Here we have everything ten strong songs and musicianship and timing that are the perfect sonic punctuation for the lyrics. Running Back To You is mellow, full of soulfulness and pathos, slower measured and addictive. There is a yearning in the chords as the guitar cries and the rhythm section keeps the beat driving on a song with shape and purpose. You just want to listen again.

Stevie Nimmo went to Superfly Studios and has created ten gorgeous songs with his band Craig Bacon on Drums & Matt Beable on Bass. His brother’s band King King’s drummer Wayne Procter was in charge of production. Wow what an album, production is precise with layers of warmth. The lyrics curl around your brain, Stevie’s voice growls, cajoles and touches your soul and then the guitar riffs that capture the tension of the six-strings creating a sound that is his and his alone. The Sky Won’t Fall is Blues that has the granite power of rock twisting around the back ground but never overpowering.

The album is a mix of tones, texture and tempos. Seven tracks in and you are Still Hungry for more music. This is power-driven rock-blues of the highest order. A track that would work well if stood out alone, surely this will get acres of radio play. It is full of smokey riffs, power and rocks your socks off!

All too soon the album is drawing to the end like a show you want to go on this is an album that has the same feeling. With lighter shading Lovin’ Might Do Us Good is a sunny song, upbeat and makes you smile. The guitar tone changes for the last track Love You Tonight an intimate number where Stevie does that magic trick you feel he is singing for you and you alone.

The album is a delicious helping of tone and energy, catch him on tour starting Thursday 4th February Co-headlining with Ben Poole you are in for a live music bonanza. Gamblers Roll is punctuated by Craig’s drumming against Stevie’s vocals and sharp guitar riffs. Stevie Nimmo’s The Sky Won’t Fall simply is British blues that sparkles and flows like a highland burn when the dark clouds are pierced by a ray of sunshine. The sunshine is all Stevie Nimmo’s, his lyrics, guitar and vocals sending ripples down the spine.

CD Reviews: Danni Nicholls ~ Mockingbird Lane

Danni Nicholls - 'Mockingbird Lane' - cover (300dpi)Danni Nicholls
Mockingbird Lane
Danni Nicholls Music

Release Date – October 23rd 2015

This second album confirms that Danni Nicholls has a voice that roots her in the category of singer/songwriter, writing lyrics with narrative, melodies that get the feet tapping and vocals that are as sweet as golden sunshine drenched mornings. Her relaxed, laid back, intuitive style creates an emotional journey that wraps you up in a comfort blanket of the song and yes she can genuinely be described as Americana; her music is a mix of country, blues and troubadour roots music that originates on the USA side of the Atlantic. This influence of Nashville whispers through every track which is not surprising as the musicians on the album are full of the cream of Nashville, full of class and using their skills to ensure the centerpiece is Danni’s sparkling voice she is a Nashville Nightingale there is crisp originality there is no Mockingbird in sight.

Mockingbird Lane is a dozen songs that sing to you opening with Long Road Home from the first note you know listening to the album will be a pleasure that you will want to keep repeating. With a counting in Leaving Tennessee begins and the vocals are deep with emotional meaning when leaving going travelling to escape the voice swells and hangs on the air with gentle acoustic guitar.

Drenched in emotion, the voice sears through the music and engages deep within your musical radar Feel Again is a track that shows maturity and vocal control that swirls around and explores the meaning of the lyrics reminding me of Amy Wadge. Whilst on Back To Memphis the phrasing and vocal tone and depth is pure Lisa Mills and the soulfulness and driving percussion of Between Forever and Goodbye ups the tempo and contrasting with the crooning style of Look Up At The Moon. Closing this stunning album with a country beat Travellin’ Man is upbeat and leaves you with a lightness of spirit and just have to listen again.

There is no surprise that with her vocal range she will always be compared with Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Riatt she is her own person with a British branding of pure Americana and is a bright star in the constellation of British Singer/Songwriters.

Mockingbird Lane is an album artfully produced so that it has a live sound that is fresh and slightly unfinished, this lack of studio burnishing leaves the music charmed with a natural purity Danni definitely touches your emotional soul this album is destined to get her name out far and wide. Mockingbird Lane resonates with every broken heart and connects to those times when life is tough and emotionally challenging while at the same time the beat is uplifting and brings a wry smile to the broken hearted.
