Gov’t Mule Releasing Archival album The Tel-Star Sessions

Gov't Mule Releasing Archival album The Tel-Star Sessions’
Legendary rock torchbearers Gov’t Mule
Releasing a new archival album – The Tel-Star Sessions
August 5, 2016 via Provogue/Mascot Label Group.

Gov't Mule Releasing Archival album The Tel-Star SessionsThe album consists of the band’s very first, and never-before-released, demos made in June 1994 at Tel-Star Studios in Bradenton, Florida. These newly mixed and mastered recordings feature the original line-up – Warren Haynes, Allen Woody and Matt Abts – and capture the rawness and excitement of the earliest days of Gov’t Mule.  The ten tracks intended to be Gov’t Mule’s band’s debut album, but  shelved gathering dust until now. Out of the 5th August the debut album will be heard for the first time – check out the video below. The 10 songs will be available digitally, as a single CD, as well as 180-gram double-vinyl set including a limited edition version with different artwork and splatter vinyl.

Recorded during the infancy of Gov’t Mule, the demos heard on The Tel-Star Sessions are from a time when Mule was an adventurous side project, formed during a year when Warren Haynes and Allen Woody had some down time from their work with the Allman Brothers Band. Becoming one of the most enduring, respected and active bands in the world was the furthest thing from the band’s imagination; the plan was to record a low-budget album and play a few shows. Two decades later, it’s now clear that they had stumbled upon something special, but at that point Mule was an experimental rock trio: Haynes, Woody and drummer Matt Abts, who Haynes brought in after playing with him in the Dickey Betts Band. Fans will love the chance to hear their early improvisational interplay, an impressive skill that has since become a signature of Gov’t Mule’s albums and live shows.

Collaborating with Allman Brothers sound engineer Bud Snyder, and taking legendary producer Tom Dowd’s advice to record all instruments simultaneously live in a room, Gov’t Mule holed up in Tel-Star Studios and sought to bring back the rock power trio and “dirty up” the bass guitar – a style that had been a marker of rock music prior to the ‘80s. Their influences leaned heavily on the likes of Cream, Jimi Hendrix Experience and ZZ Top, but Mule’s search to bring back a familiar sound is mingled with grunge and alt-rock influences that had just emerged in the early-mid ‘90s. Little did they know that the magic created during these sessions would spark such a prolific musical journey. It is undeniably enthralling to go back in time and experience how it all began.

Where You Going To

Legendary guitarist and singer-songwriter, Robin Trower will release studio album Where You Going To  on Friday 6th May via Manhaton Records.

The guitarist, whose 1974 album, Bridge of Sighs, is regarded by many rock pundits as a blues milestone, describes his new studio album as a continuation of his previous album Something’s About To Change.

Trower says: “Where You Are Going To ranges from rock to funky soul, with some epic blues grooves. The title track is me reflecting on my life and career, and how we have no idea how our lives might unfold.“In terms of influences I felt I was channelling a combination of James Brown and John Lee Hooker on the funky The Fruits Of Your Desire and album closer Delusion Sweet Delusion. I’m really looking forward to playing those on tour.”

He adds: “Opener When Will The Next Blow Fall is a bit of a rocker inspired by the events in Europe and how uncertain people’s futures are. The album features two very emotional tracks, We Will Be Together Someday and I’m Holding On To You, both dedicated to the memory of my late wife.”

The new album features Trower on guitars, vocals and bass, with Chris Taggart on drums. It was produced by Livingstone Brown at Studio 91 in Newbury.  The album is available for pre-order fromAmazon UK.

THE GRAHAMS

GLORY BOUND

12 South Records

Release Date             October 2 2015

Opening the album with the title track two things stand out The Grahams love to deliver lyric rich story telling songs with a jaunty Americana/Country feel this is music that compels you to sit back, smile and tap your feet and clap your hands. Love the line “Wish I never majored in Caffeine and Solitude, Wish I never let them see my attitude” then there is that link to a train journey of life crashing around you and you wish you could put the hammer down! As The Grahams said “There is a special connection between American folk music and the railroad that has no parallel elsewhere in the world. Rail lines stitch together the sprawling fabric of American song. As writers of Americana music, our goal is to draw on the deep, recurring sources of American folk culture, giving them new shape.”

This is an album that chronicles from one track to another; the tempo changes, and the addition of different instruments shapes the tone as the blues harp winds around The Gambling Girl the second track that feels like a station stop on a journey that is defined by the fiery music pouring out of your speakers. You are riding the rails of excitement as fiddles and organ join the party with a storm brewing hurricane of a track Blow Wind Blow; and then the tempo slows as night falls with Lay Me Down. Alyssa’s vocals are clear and calm with the effect of a lullaby cooling a troubled spirit with Doug’s guitar gently underplaying keeping the travelling lullaby in shape. Next stop is a hoe-down at Kansas City this is a real dance time as the energy is rebuilt approaching the half-way point of this self-penned album bought to our ears courtesy of the skills and artistry of Alyssa Graham, Douglas Graham & Bryan McCann. The album is full of country/ Americana tones and The Wild One reflects the storytelling tradition The Grahams are ensuring this is kept at the heart of the music, by the end of the track we feel we know all about Billy Green, we have all met and loved bad wild boys such as him!  The music flows like a journey there are quiet times when all is going along steady, surprises around the corner and then the wildness when heading somewhere unknown and the outcome uncertain above it all it shows life travelled is fun. Borderland has the twang of Country and the tale linked with being at the station and we find the mix of Lord and Devil so the Borderland is an unknown place betwixt and between but definitely grand! Now we have the last two tracks and the feeling of anticipation picks up with a gentle song The Spinner with drumming that brushes the vocals and drives the beat along at a pace neither fast nor slow. The last track is also the shortest and has a feel of optimism as we are on the freight car why we are off to the Promised Land, where is that why HOME!

In addition to the Glory that is their third album Glory Bound they have been involved in a documentary Rattle the Hocks (released digitally) filmed on the move and in venues from Sun Studio to Amtrak’s famed City of New Orleans train, produced and directed by Cody Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars, which chronicles their train-bound excursions and the influence of train travel on American roots music.  The list of guests on the album makes this full of depth of tone that curls and shapes around the lyrics and the power of Alyssa’s vocals. Glory Bound is an album that will not linger on the shelves gathering dust but revisited and the favourite track will change to reflect your mood and how life is treating you in that moment.

Simultaneously, the band will be releasing Rattle the Hocks, a musical documentary focusing on the live recording, and the relationship between the railroad and American roots music. Both film and album (which will be released digitally on May 19) were directed and produced by Cody Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars.

CD Review: Dani Wilde: Songs About You

Layout 1Dani Wilde

Songs About You

Bri-Tone Records

There is an elegance in both the guitar playing and the vocals and the percussive undertones throughout Songs About You, creating a mood board of musical textures and the songs are relevant to everyone with feelings apparent on fist listening and after listening to on repeat it is indeed a mighty fine album. Every song composed by the multi-talented Dani Wilde and all eleven tracks are strong with lyrics that reflect an emotional connection to circumstances of life.
The opening track Open Road is evocative of a trip with the opening guitar, piano and country twang and then the glories of Dani’s soprano purity as the lyrics unfold full of memories and yearning; this is a track that hooks you in with its jaunty chorus line and the twang of guitar and clear piano notes you just want to hear more.
This is an album where the music and vocals blend to produce a full acoustic sound with layers of tonal contrasts with Dan’s pure bell like quality and the raunchy voice lower down the scale combine with a backing waterfall of tones with the mid-tone of Bethany on cello which for me connects to my music radar every-time. The rhythm section, guitars courtesy of Todd Sharpeville & Stuart Dixon and Rhodes piano effectively add in the layers to create a tonal sculpture of delight as seen on That Ain’t Love.

Fancy something a bit different well track four pleases you as Change is certainly a break in feel and tempo from the beginning of the album, the lyrics just draw you in with some superb drumming with the backing singers adding another layer of interest. Half way through and I was mesmerised by the quality of production every note is played and meshed together to create a whole sound that has the sole purpose of showcasing the talents of Dani and her vocals that are very special they combine a purity and every word is sung so they can be heard and the emphasis is put on certain phrases so that the song makes perfect sense. Flame has the feel of a contemporary twist on a Lieder song it would work as well with just a piano accompaniment; there is a simplicity that can only be created when talent works in harmony.

Begging For Love has a wonderful intro that with Piano and drums has a Latino dance feel and your hips move to the sultry tones and your brain engages with the words and you smile with the cheeky percussion and use of male backing vocals including her brother Will. The closing track is Time and we have a southern country blues riff that meanders like a bayou, this is a perfect end to an album that is such a joy to listen to, want to hear more of the cello guitar and vocals, then make the time to put on replay and listen again, I did.

This is an accomplished album from Dani Wilde reflecting the maturity of the vocalization and the projection of her voice to portray the emotion and feeling of the song and connects to the listener’s inner soul, while still keeping that skillful finger touch that makes her six-strings resonate in harmony this is undoubtedly a powerful album.

The new self-titled album from Gill Landry will be released through ATO Records on 22nd June. The 10-track album was fully produced and mostly engineered by Landry and recorded in what he calls, “a ramshackle, shanty-ass apartment on the south side of Nashville.” Landry gathered various friends and musicians on his nonstop travels alone and as a multi-instrumentalist and songwriting member of Old Crow Medicine Show.

These artists include Laura Marling, who duets on ‘Take This Body’, songwriter Robert Ellis, Nick Etwell of Mumford & Sons and Odessa Jorgensen, who lends harmonies and fiddle to a number of tunes. Landry will tour the UK as special guest to Laura Marling in April/May. Listen to Landry’s duet with Laura Marling below…

Gill Landry ft. Laura Marling – Take This Body:

Embed:

Louisiana native, Gill Landry, is a singer-songwriter, multi- instrumentalist, adventuresome photographer, hitchhiking gentleman, self-taught painter, shade tree mechanic, and then some. It would take a novel to tell his tale. From hustling the streets of Paris to hitchhiking America on day labor and daydreams, he’s slept beneath bridges with his brothers and in the beds of lordy estates. After cutting his musical teeth in New Orleans and chewing up half of America, he started writing songs about it; interpreting life from the curb up.

Gill’s self-titled third album is his first on the ATO label, but he is not new to the family. He’s played guitar, banjo, pedal steel, and been a contributing songwriter in Old Crow Medicine Show since 2004. Although Gill’s music is influenced by some of the same sources as Old Crow, from Dylan to old delta blues songsters, his music is very much his own. As one reviewer put it, “Landry’s too sharp a storyteller, too tuned-in a craftsman, too real, to find himself on the wrong side of suspicion. Like Tom Waits, John Prine, Steve Earle… Landry is down-to-business believable. His songs carry their own persona, and though they may be creepy and otherworldly at times and nasty and grubby at others, they’re familiar while remaining at arm’s length.”

After working through some more classic broken-hearted love songs on his first two albums, Landry says, “I tried not to come at this one from the point of how things could or should have been, or should be, but rather searched for sweet understanding and surrender to what is or was, and moving forward with compassion and kindness without harsh judgement to the reasons for this crime or that misstep.”
