Wake up and peer into the depths of the Black Water, Welsh-born Toriah Fontaine’s debut album full of grime, gravel and blues that swirl in the dark musical form. Opening with the title track with the pounding determined drum call overlaid by Toriah’s earthy vocals, powerful and full of texture and tone this is blues contemporary whilst connecting to a primeval ancestry. Recorded at Studio Toy in Cardiff, Toriah is stepping out from any blues comfort zone. The music is contemporary tipping its hat at the deep and fertile waters of the river of music that is blues inspired. Here the music dark, sexy and mysterious as you feel your reflection popping out at you from the Black Water that holds ten compelling tracks in its depth.  As she sings with a country flair, Sleeping On The Wrong Side with hints of Honky Tonk Piano the beat is determined and a softer side is rippling through Dark Waters. The voice peels from the music leaving the scars of life shining through with a gentler smoky blues-jazz edge on Giving Back My Loving. On every track, the centrepiece is Toriah’s vocals they make you cry, laugh and howl with her as she combines the power of her lungs with tonal shape and emotional colour. Toriah is a combination of strong women singers from Amy Winehouse through Mavis Staples, with a touch of Etta James but above all, she sings every song as her own this is no pale imitation it is the real deal.  The album has a flow achieved by recording live at Studio Toy in Cardiff. This is a sound you want to hear again a vocalist who has gargled with blades and whiskey that soften the mix with a smooth cream. The music is fresh, delivered with a blues poke that has an energy as we find her Howling At My Door. The cymbals and humming intoxicate as we are invited to Come On In My Kitchen a quieter tone though still full of intense sparkling blues power as the Robert Johnson classic is given a vocal cwtch by Toriah. Closing out a debut album that will get Toriah heard far and wide is Blood Runs Thin, leaving you in the knowledge this is an album that improves with every listen; second time around you hear more of the guitar as your brain is no longer immersed in the inky blues Black Water that is Toriah’s superb vocals and the eight originals show this is a singer who can write a good blues tale.

Black Water an album released last year that never should have been overlooked by Bluesdoodles. Making mends by including on the 2017 Advent Calendar and will make a great stocking filler for any contemporary blues collector.
