21 March 2018, London:- Continuing the borough’s historic legacy of rhythm and blues, Ealing Blues Festival has announced the first wave of artists for the 2018 iteration, including ‘rockgrass’ pioneers Hayseed Dixie and leading Rolling Stones tribute act The Counterfeit Stones.
No strangers to experimentation and originality, Hayseed Dixie have recorded albums in Norwegian, covered AC/DC to critical acclaim and boast the fastest banjo player in the world. With an impressive catalogue of 15 albums – their latest, Free Your Mind…And Your Grass Will Follow, was released last year. Having toured the European and US festival scene prodigiously and promise to deliver a raucous show.
Hayseed Dixie will be joined by the unparalleled The Counterfeit Stones, hailed by Mick Jagger as “the most famous Stones band in England“. Fronted by the charismatic Nick Dagger, the band come equipped with classic hits, retro costume and humour to entertain audiences of all ages. Renowned for their wild energy and mirror-like performances of the Stones’ epic repertoire, The Counterfeit Stones will undoubtedly rock the blues stage.
Continuing its dedication to the diverse blues scene in the UK, the festival will also be welcoming Kitty, Daisy & Lewis, fresh from the release of their fourth studio album Superscope in September 2017. Signed to former BBC Radio 1 DJ and Bestival curator Rob da Bank’s label Sunday Best, multi-instrumentalists Kitty, Daisy & Lewis have shifted over a quarter of a million records worldwide and are sure to light up the stage with their distinctive fusion of R&B, blues, soul, punk, rock and roll and West-Indian music.
Other first wave artists include psychedelic classic rock group Perfect Blue Sky, the sultry Kareña K Band and European alt-blues act LaVendore Rogue.
Taking place in Ealing’s Walpole Park, Ealing Blues Festival will run from 21st – 22nd July. Since its inception in 1987, the festival has continued the borough’s rich musical history that began at the Ealing Club in 1962 where the likes of The Who, The Rolling Stones, and CREAM members Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton cut their teeth. Ealing Blues Festival’s contribution to the scene has recently been recognised by the UK Blues Federation, who have nominated the event for Blues Based Festival of the Year.
Ealing Blues Festival is one of 2018’s Ealing Summer Festivals, a series of six separate events taking place in the borough throughout the months of June and July. It is produced by the Event Umbrella on behalf of Ealing Council.

Ealing Blues 2018 Saturday 21st – Sunday 22nd July Announced

AN OVERVIEW BY ARTISTIC DIRECTOR & FOUNDER – BOB SALMONS

Over the years, the definition of ‘What is Blues?’ has become very blurred. Muddy Waters sang, ‘The Blues had a baby and they named it ‘Rock’n’Roll’, BB King said in his autobiography, ‘I heard funk as a hopped up version of The Blues’, Ray Charles did a Country & Western album.

And so, when programming The Ealing Blues Festival, we adopt a very broad view of acts we can put on. Basically, we think of it as a big party. The music has to be played ‘live’ with a rhythmic content that you should at least be able to tap your feet to, and we like our artists to be entertaining!

With this in mind – HAYSEED DIXIE will headline on Saturday 21 July. Specialising in Bluegrass versions of Rock Classics, they blend humour with exceptional musicianship.

Closing the show on Sunday 22 July will be THE COUNTERFEIT STONES. The Rolling Stones met and were formed in 1962 at The legendary Ealing Blues Club and so the booking of the best Stones Tribute band pays homage to their links with Ealing.

And also on Sunday 22 July, on the South Stage, we have HONEY B. MAMA the Blues singing alter-ego of actress CLEO SYLVESTRE. In 1964 whilst still a teenager she released a version of the Phil Spector song ‘To Know Him is To Love Him’. Her backing band on the record was none other than the Rolling Stones.

This year has seen the introduction of the UK Blues Awards, with The Ealing Blues Festival being a finalist in the ‘Best Blues Based Festival of the Year’ category. We also have three finalists in other categories on this year’s bill.

ZOE SCHWARZ – Main Stage, Sunday 22nd 1.30pm – Female Blues Vocalist of The Year Finalist

ZOE SCHWARZ & BLUE COMMOTION, Main Stage, Sunday 22nd 1.30pm – Blues Album of the Year Finalist – for their album ‘THIS IS THE LIFE I CHOOSE’

LA VENDORE ROGUE – Main Stage Saturday 21st, 7.00pm – Blues Band of the Year Finalist

RICHARD TOWNEND & THE MIGHTY BOSSCATS – Main Stage Saturday 21st 3.15pm – Blues Album of the Year Finalist – for their album ‘GOD BLESS AMERICA’.

RICHARD TOWNEND – Main Stage Saturday 21st 3.15pm – Blues Songwriter of the Year Finalist.

* The winners of the UK Blues Awards will be announced on Saturday 19th May

And that’s not all…………

JADE DANIELLE WILLIAMS, lead singer with DuBELLOWS got through to ‘team Tom Jones’ on the 2018 series of ‘The Voice’. Main Stage Sunday 22nd 3.15pm

Ealing Blues Festival Host Musician ROBERT HOKUM (the musician alter-ego of Festival founder Bob Salmons) recently released ‘Trippin’ Backwards’ a compilation of his favourite ‘live’ performances with several tracks recorded at the Festival. The album received excellent reviews and was The Independent Blues Broadcasters Association (IBBA) ‘Pick of the Month’ for October 2017. Main Stage Sunday 22nd 7.00pm.

We welcome back NEVER THE BRIDE, Main Stage Saturday 21st 5.00pm, fronted by Nikki Lamborne and Catherine Feeny, they have been described as ‘The Queens of Blues Rock’. The Who’s Roger Daltrey said, ‘Nikki Lamborne has the best female rock voice since Janis Joplin’.

And, ‘New for 2018’. Jam sessions have proved highly popular on the Blues Circuit and so for Saturday 21st on the Bar Stage we will have THE GREAT WEST GROOVE as house band backing LITTLE STEAM, CARMEN CARR, THE RIGHT REVEREND SWIFTY LeZARRE who will be jamming together.

The Ealing Blues Festival has always supported local talent and this year’s bill is no exception. Acts with a member who has lived, worked or studied in the Borough of Ealing this year includes KARENA K BAND, BORN OF THE SUN, JUMP 66, THE GREAT WEST GROOVE, LITTLE STEAM, DuBELLOWS, KING BUSTER BLUES, SAM WILLOUGHBY, GARRY ‘SLIDE GUY’ SMITH, BEER O’CLOCK.
