The Night Siren Steve Hackett Charms St David’s Hall Cardiff

Tonight the last Friday of April the packed St David’s Hall was treated to a programme of two halves. A musical programme of two movements. The first Prog Rock modern, progressive and pertinent as Steve Hackett unveiled live numbers from his stunning album The Night Siren and dipping onto four of his many solo albums.  The second helping on this musical palette of delights was a revisiting of Genesis, the majority drawn from Wind and Wuthering celebrating forty years since its release.

The Night Siren Steve Hackett Charms St David’s Hall CardiffFor two hours, reality suspended as St David’s Hall was bathed in the multi-instrumental tones and textures created by Steve Hackett and the musicians that surround him. With an array of wind instruments including flute, penny whistle and soprano sax, keys, and a mixture of electronic wizardry, Rob Townsend; behind him surrounded by keys Roger King; the rhythm section of Gary O’Toole behind a sparkling shield of cymbals and bassist Nick Beggs with fretless and twin-necked instruments; and joining the stage for the second half vocalist Nad Sylvan.

The Night Siren Steve Hackett Charms St David’s Hall CardiffWith a discography full of depth and interest the night started with a dip into his third solo album Spectral Mornings and Every Day with the soprano sax adding brightness and colour we knew this wasn’t going to be an everyday performance we were in for something special. Gently easing us in with the familiar we were soon hearing the new album, the dramatic instrumental El Niňo so early on a number that was going to be one of the many highlights of the evening.  The music from the instruments was woven in to a sonic technicolour coat of shape and form, prog rock that enthralled, informs and takes you deep within yourself. Three other tracks from the Night Siren were incorporated into the first set, as he stepped back into the past The Steppes fitted seamlessly into the collection with its Eastern feel.

The light show throughout added a sense of drama as the swirling patterns fell across the stage then up through the tiers that form the many faceted auditorium of St David’s Hall. As we stepped into The Skeleton Gallery the music live reinforcing the power of Steve Hackett’s latest recording and then to the album’s opening track Behind The Smoke. With a political comment about Brexit, an audience divided Steve reminded us that his lineage included Polish refugees. He sang the lyrics that explore the despair of the displaced and how borders contain. Whilst the music crossed all boundaries finding a common coming together through the power of the musical note tonight in Cardiff.  This emotional masterpiece should be the earworm that dictates our walk through life and how we meet and greet strangers from a different place. Last visit to the album is Serpentine, dedicated to his father and gentler times. Inspired by his father selling paintings in Hyde Park, London.  Closing out the set with Rise Again and Shadow Of The Hierophant; with Nick Beggs sitting on the floor using his bass pedals creating a spellbinding atmosphere. We had been on a voyage as acolytes and the feet of superb musicians who deliver prog rock that is mesmerizing, entertaining and often beautiful music, that cascades and falls away leaving a thoughtful phrase or question.

The Night Siren Steve Hackett Charms St David’s Hall Cardiff

The Night Siren Steve Hackett Charms St David’s Hall CardiffThe Second set, was much anticipated with the Cardiff crowd looking forward to old favourites and hearing Wind & Wuthering tracks live once again.  Opening with Eleventh Earl of Mar we were once again introduced to the vocals of Nad Sylvan. They are a beguiling mix of Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins yet never pale imitations Nad brings his own sonic quality and vocal interpretations to every number. The cheer for One For the Vine, when announced was loud and very happy. Cardiff prog rockers were delighted. Then the atmosphere changed as we were treated to an Acoustic Noodle, Steve on stage with acoustic guitar joined by the band at the end a quiet interlude, with classical guitar playing, hints of flamenco and a moment of reflection. The quiet was broken with Blood on the Rooftops, and with Inside Out written by Phil Collins, an early lyric that was left off the final cut of Wind And Wuthering; a Cinderella song quipped Hackett, included tonight as it fits in with the rest. Closing out the set that highlighted the power of Genesis was Musical Box, a wonderful atmospheric number, Nad, using the tambourine to great effect as he added drama to the lyrics. Tonight was a great nostalgic set of Genesis classics.

The Night Siren Steve Hackett Charms St David’s Hall CardiffSt David’s Hall was resplendent in the glow of Prog Rock from Steve Hackett and his band of musicians, we had been bathed in lights of every hue and taken on a journey through the power of lyrics and the complexities of multi-instruments exploring the notes of the octaves. The sound was superb, the audience attentive and as one rose as The Musical Box faded. The encore the perfect Genesis titled number Los Endos. This must not be the end, Steve Hackett and his Progressive Rock is welcome back in town anytime. For me I enjoyed the reminiscent quality of the Genesis numbers, they are familiar and safe, BUT the new solo numbers have an edge and intimacy they are modernity looking forward not back.

Roadstars hit The Tunnels Tonight

Roadstars hit The Tunnels Tonight

Roadstars hit The Tunnels Tonight

Tonight we caught up with the Planet Rock Roadstars, at The Tunnels in Bristol having seen them in Cardiff earlier on the sixteen-night tour. What changes tonight? First off the running order tonight SIMO, Aaron KeylockFederal Charm closing out the night.

SIMO are a trio fusing music from every genre into a river of guitar magic and have hints of Cream flavoured with Zappa and their own unique rock music. Tonight opening there was a plan, less of a jam as they showcased new songs and with a short set the opening track Don’t Waste Time was particularly pertinent. The trio have power, control inventive licks and riffs and an intuitive understanding of where they are taking the music. Drummer Adan Abrashoff has magic sticks reminiscent of Chad Wackerman technical and full of interest. The link that holds the band in shape with bass playing that is deep and rich is Elad Shapiro. The focus of many eyes is on JD Simo his guitar playing is mesmerising, energetic, full of details and little licks that curl around the rhythm section. This is a band that warms the room with Light The Candle and the spectacular Shine. This number really did shine with all the glories that are SIMO. The set tonight closed with Long May You Sail, the only number tonight from their current album Let Love Show The Way. Yes SIMO is definitely a band you want to sail on the crest of a wave with.

Up next, loud, electric young gun Aaron Keylock and his band. Tonight’s outing was still loud, fast and furious but I have to say there was more control in the performance. The sound was better and the vocals were present tonight. This is a power trio with rock energy bassist Jordan Maycock adds depth to the sound as the drummer Sonny Greaves completes the trio. As we await their forthcoming debut album due out January 2017, Against The Grain it is the live experience that is building this young band’s platform. The trio appear to be going down rock’s path, yet Aaron with his love of the blues needs to incorporate the control of blues into his live show. This was seen in Medicine Man and then Spin The Bottle has a chorus that excites audiences. Aaron with his raw potential will definitely be taking fans on an interesting journey will the road be rocky or blues? We wait with anticipation.

Finishing of tonight’s instalment of the Roadstars tour are Mancunian band Federal Charm much to the delight of the fans in the room. With the revolving order there were some disappointed as they would have liked to have heard SIMO ending the evening as they were the new band for many and are definitely exciting audiences wherever they play. This quartet with the two guitars up front of vocalist Nick Bowden & Paul Bowes as they interpret the blues with energy and charm. Occasionally it is hard to determine who is playing lead and rhythm as they meld the tone into the Federal sound. Completing the foursome are bassist LD Morawski and drummer Danny Rigg who do so much more than provide a solid platform. Federal Charm bringing a swagger to the music and always a delight whenever they play loud. It would be great if they could add some extra to the tracks from recordings so that the live version of numbers like Guess What have a bit extra pizazz. This would add excitement and a hint of danger to the live set that once again won them fans. Closing once again with Silhouette, the single from their much-praised album Crossing The Divide, they delivered and satisfied the crowd tonight.

Aaron Keylock with all The Right Moves

Today, teenage guitar legend Aaron Keylock has released an audio stream of his new single ‘All The Right Moves’ on YouTube

Talking about the album Aaron reflects;  “Against the Grain was penned about 3 years ago now and has grown on the road; I had a Led Zeppelin style riff, mixed it with some Johnny Winter vibe and stamped my own style on it.”  Crowd favourite Medicine Man was the first song he ever demoed whilst the hints of Rory Gallagher on All The Right Moves is a lightning rocker that’s fast becoming a live favourite.

The song features on his upcoming debut album ‘Cut Against The Grain’, which is released on Friday 20th January 2017 by Mascot Label Group. Things have been building momentum and in Cut Against The Grain, Aaron Keylock is set to launch himself on the world full throttle.

Rob Tognoni The TasMANian Devil Brave New Album

Rob Tognoni The TasMANian Devil New Album Brave Now Out

Having heard Rob Tognoni live at HRH Blues 2016, I was excited at the opportunity  to listen to the single Brave from the album. Bluesdoodles predicts that the  single will get lots of airplay. Why? It is strong, brave rock with a hard vein of blues flowing through. The vocals have power and purpose the drumming kicks up the beat and then the blue icing that fills the track  Rob Tognoni’s guitar. The tone, pace the riffs that fit into a pocket earworm that you want to carry around this is a confident number that sets out the stall and makes you run to get the album Brave.  This is easily done as Rob is on Tour in the UK throughout November.

Due to a recent vocal cord condition with lead singer and guitarist Alan Nimmo, the majority of King King’s November 2016 UK tour dates with special guests Broken Witt Rebels, have been re-scheduled to January, February, March and May 2017. The news follows the release of the band’s first ever live album ‘King King Live’ that went to #1 in Amazon’s Best Sellers Blues Rock Chart, and the upcoming release of their radio remix of their new single ‘Waking Up’.

Says King King’s frontman, Alan Nimmo, “I’ve seen my ENT specialist. He put a camera down my throat to look at what condition my vocal cords were in. Unfortunately, there’s still a good bit of inflammation and redness. I’ve been working with a vocal coach to build strength and stamina to aid my recovery.
“We will be re-scheduling most of the dates on the UK tour to January, February and March, however, we will commit to the remaining four shows on the November UK tour, beginning at Edinburgh’s Queen’s Hall (25 November), continuing through to the Live Rooms in Chester (26 November), The Grand Venue in Clitheroe (27 November) and wrapping up in London at Islington Assembly Hall (29 November).”

In the last six months, the buzz around self-released, Birmingham blues rock band Broken Witt Rebels has reached a deafening roar. So much so that the band have rushed out their latest single, Guns, to capitalize on fan-driven interest. The official video for Guns has generated almost 400,000 views on YouTube in less than 48 hours.

Chosen by the fans, Guns is now the second single to be taken from the band’s <strong>Georgia Pine EP. Produced by Tom Gittins (Robert Plant), the previous single, Low, was a featured track of the week on Radio X, and play-listed on Planet Rock, who are currently playing Guns.

GUNS pays homage to their hometown of Birmingham with a melody and energy that tears through you, with the refrain. “Born and raised where Guns are made, they burn bright like a cigarette.”

The Birmingham four-piece is comprised of James Tranter (guitar), Danny Core (vocals), Luke Davis (bass) and James Dudley (drums). Their bluesy southern swagger has drawn favourable comparisons with Kings of Leon, Alabama Shakes and The Black Keys.

Alter Bridge In Search of The Last Hero

Alter Bridge In Search of The Last Hero

Alter Bridge In Search of The Last Hero

With five albums now released Alter Bridge are blending earlier influences with music they want to play now heavier with a curling melodic guitar driven journey that speeds you through the music. Alter Bridge refuse to stand still they continue to strive to improve on the last album pleasing current fans and winning new followers. As Myles Kennedy says “While recognizing where we’ve come from, we wanted to expand what Alter Bridge is. This record is definitely an exploration of the hero theme—whether it be the lack of heroes, the need for heroes, or a tribute to heroes. There’s a story in there.”

This is hard rock with the sting of metal with the winning combination of Tremonti and Kennedy as guitar and vocals work off each other as the story of the music unfolds and takes you on a darkened journey where our footsteps chime with the frantic urging rhythm from Marshall & Phillips.

Opening with Show Me  A Leader the swell of the melody builds ready for the guitar solo to stream through like a visionary light that is Mark Tremonti, the pace picks up and Myles Kennedy storms the number with Show Me A Leader refrain, with a yearning yet manic desperation. A reflection of today’s troubled world as we seek leaders and heroes to shed light into the darkness. The track pulls you as all opening numbers should into the album with an adrenalin-driven need to hear more.  There is a feeling of a narrative a story pulling you through the album to the title track. The pace is fast metal to the ground for the doom-laden The Writing On The Wall this is Alter Bridge that continues to excite. With riffs that are muscular, bass lines that are heavy and drumming driven to shape the rhythm. This is the solid rock face that Tremonti and Kennedy stand on building the tension creating anthems of the future with tracks like My Champion, we all need someone that champions us. For stand out guitar laden riffs, and licks with solid drumming chops it has to be Poison In Your Veins, this is a loud fast-moving four minutes of delight, the poison of the guitar seeps into your veins in a delectable way this is poison that sounds very good, who needs an antidote to this! Now we are at fever pitch half way through the album how can they build on this opening studio album full of resounding lyrics, choruses that you want to sing out loud and guitar solos that seep into your soul. They can’t I am sorry to say. It is an album of two halves.  The second half is good but the momentum is static Losing Patient the silent opening almost made me lose patience! When the track opens up it is more of the same an echo of the previous tracks.  Then that track with a difference a power ballad, You Will Be Remembered that captures the story, direction and feeling of the first six tracks, we are looking at heroes that serve communities and the country. We may not have political heroes but people still can be heroic. Then we have the epic title track that brings the album to a close the tempo is controlled the melodic lyrical closing is full of heartfelt desperation as The Last Hero tried to save us. There is a burning necessity in the guitar playing looking, probing with chords that are trying to find the light and matching the vocal tone of Myles perfectly.   The album is very good, but what we needed was a coherent strong bridge between the first and second half of the album to make The Last Hero truly heroic and great.

Ian Siegal 2wnty5ive The Collection

Ian Siegal 2wnty5ive The Collection is a three CD boxed set celebrating twenty-five years of professional touring. Accompanying the recordings  is a book with an opening biography written by Tom Russel, MoJo Magazine, Classic Rock and more, he understands the music and gets underneath the skin of the music. Into the mix are a selection of photographs that epitomise the spirit, soul and moods that are Ian Siegal on tour. Whilst the lyrics, once again confirm the poetry inherent in the songs written by a wordsmith who mixes his metaphors, whilst misquoting the Bible and plucks phrases and rhymes for the interesting corners of the lexicon of songwriters. Of the thirty-eight tracks, seven were co-written the other tracks are all written by the man himself.  The collection spans the music Ian and his various bands and collaborations have been released by Nugene Records, ten albums in total. Yes, we have the individual albums but these songs have made the cut and have been selected to celebrate, showcase and delight in the many memories we have of following Ian on the road for all or some of the last twenty-five years.

Ian Siegal 2wnty5ive The CollectionThis is the Opus Majus of an artist who whether playing solo, as a duo or with a band electric or acoustic always entertains and the box set does just that.  The collection has been put together with thought this is not  a timeline starting with earliest and ending with the latest it is a melding of tone, mood and colours that is the spectrum of country blues infused rootsy music that Ian Siegal delivers with the charm and wit of a snake oil salesman as he growls snarls and lures you into the tonally magic brew that is his distinctive work.  The albums the songs are taken from are like a staging post on the journey Ian takes us on through the music that inspires him The three albums as a trio/band Meat & Potatoes, Swagger and Broadsides, the solo album Dust, his live albums Man and Guitar and One Night and Amsterdam, Mississippi hill country inspired The Skinny, Candy Store Kid and Picnic sessions and Wayward Sons as a duo with Jimbo Matthus. We all have favourite tracks and the album that has that special place in our Siegal collection. The box collection captures every moment and wraps up our memories across the three CDs we can sit back and savour. This is a walk on the dark side with Ian Siegal, rootsy blues with country colouring as we explore the music and the journey we have travelled with a contemporary musical troubadour where Ian wanders down to the bayou, up in the hills and across the plain he is The Train and we are the passengers on a musical ride that is always exciting.

Do not be Stranger Than a Green Dog and get along to an Ian Siegal show and enjoy the music as he digs back into a back catalogue that is deep and wide and definitely a portrait of the man and his guitar. Here is to the last Twenty-Five years with Ian Siegal and looking forward to the next musical gem on the train ride.

How to score this? it is a Ten yet again a collection that will form an integral part of every fans collection and for those yet to discover Ian Siegal it his music encapsulated in a three CD Collection. You would be Hard Pressed to find a better collection and this is a trio of delights that will never be sent to Quarantine.

Rising star Dan Owen has announced his brand new single ‘Moonlight’, celebrating the release of his latest EP Open Hands and Enemies out today through LAB Records.

The single premiered with The Independent who said, “Shrewsbury-born singer-songwriter Dan Owen is one to watch… Owen has a voice quite beyond his years, is a versatile guitarist, and judging by his opening performance for Birdy at the Eventim Apollo he’s an electrifying live act as well.”
