Entering The World of Classic Rock Inglorious II

Entering The World of Classic Rock Inglorious II

Entering The World of Classic Rock Inglorious II

When Nathan James stormed onto the stage at Planet Rockstock 2015 with Inglorious eighteen months ago the potential for something huge, replicating the rock bands of the past was written in the stars, as reflected in the crystal ball on the cover of their first self-titled album. From that point they have grown into the band they promised to be. The second album is always difficult. Not for Inglorious they didn’t waste time and effort on a title – it is simply Inglorious II. That is the only simply thing.

With a dozen original numbers written by the whole band the feeling of musicians working together creating an organic living musical identity from first to the last chords is evident. This is all underpinned by this studio album having the fluidity, driving energy of a live sound. Being on the road, receiving audience reactions have shaped and formed the sound as they recorded as they play live, with raw energy and the building of tones from the instruments and not trickery.  With the mixing done by  Kevin Shirley  the album has a the stamp of Classic Rock, not trapped in the past but as a sounding board for music you want to rock to.
The band wrote the whole album with no guest writers this time, they said “It came together very organically after spending time touring together and felt great. We knew we were making an album this time too! We focused on getting our sounds just right so we could get into the studio and out in the least time poss.”

The opening chords are full of controlled restraint, the feel of acoustic, building the suspense we have all been feeling since announcement date 12th May for the release of the album on Frontiers Records. The crash of cymbals the melodic howl of Nathan as we are off on an Inglorious rush of melodic rock, play it often and play it loud Nathan may sing I Don’t Need Your Loving! BUT! We need your heady rock fueled energy it is fresh, modern, created for the twenty-first century with a quality that is firmly stepping back in time.

Third track in and you know that this is an album that will perform superbly live, and in the meantime will stay on repeat. Tell Me Why; demonstrates that Nathan has the freedom to perform those toe curling with delight vocals because of the band. The four musicians throughout provide more than a solid platform they give the sound shape and form for the lyrics and vocals to curl round, whether in anger, love or for the pure joy of singing.  The drumming from Phil Beaver is rhythmically strong as we Read All About It and Andreas’ guitar work has a sting in its tail.  As the groove changes with Change Is Coming and its deep bass line from Colin Patterson. Inglorious are a band connected through the music they love to play.

The blistering guitar opening of No Good For You, they may sing and play like that every day for me and will definitely be good for lovers of rock. As the album reaches its finale, we have time to draw our breath, reset our energy levels with Faraway, simple, quieter, a controlled vocal delivery from Nathan full of delicate intricacies. Faraway is a beguiling track. Then the grand closing number with High Class Woman. High class certainly describes the album.

Do not expect surprises, this is a rock album and they deliver.  As ever Inglorious are being compared and contrasted to bands and singers of the past. For me that is a useful starting point, the reality is Nathan James and Inglorious on the second recorded offering are proving they are not pale imitations. The sound is Inglorious’ own, the sound is glorious.

Before, making albums Nathan thought to himself, “Why are those classic albums so awesome?” He realised it was because “the musicians were recording in an organic way; they could track it live and capture amazing energy.” He certainly has lived up to his observations on the whirlwind raw and tamed Inglorious II. Joining the charismatic front man and vocalist Nathan James are lead guitarist Andreas Eriksson, bassist Colin Parkinson, rhythm guitarist Wil Taylor, and drummer Phil Beaver.  With the departure of Wil from the band it is welcoming back former guitarist Drew Lowe.

Inglorious II is a mighty fine rock album with all the necessary components, but definitely not playing rock by numbers. This is modern rock with attitude, raw and at times a little bit dangerous. They want to thrill you through music and inglorious ii definitely thrills.

Dan Patlansky In Conversation Touring 2017 and Beyond

Dan Patlansky In Conversation
Touring 2017 and Beyond

BD: Morning Dan, great to see and catch up with you in Sheffield at HRH Blues and the opportunity to talk this morning

BD: Dan Patlansky, Back in UK and Europe for an exciting tour. Latest single Sonova Faith from the award-winning and acclaimed album Introvertigo.  Returning to venues new and old favourites? With a new band tell us about your touring plan. Starting off at Mr Kyps with Ash Wilson opening and HRH festival you have hit the ground running

DP: Yes, back in UK and Europe with second round touring with Introvertigo.  Following the achievement of Introvertigo being number 1 Blues Rock Album of 2016 by the influential American website Blues Rock Review.  So we are back with a new band of session musicians from Germany bringing a different feel from my South African band. Part tour back at The Globe in Cardiff which will be such fun with Ash Wilson opening a great band, great songs the combination will be a good night of live music following on from Mr Kyps. HRH Blues was amazing great crowd and some amazing bands the atmosphere was really positive.

BD: Having heard your acoustic set at HRH which was wonderful, elegant, beautiful with lingering notes that I wanted to last forever; have you thought about doing more acoustic in the UK?

DP: Yes, it was fun. Acoustic is a different beast to playing electric. In some ways limiting with the change of guitar style. It is a challenge in the way you play and think about the music. As for playing acoustic in the UK; back in South Africa we often do the combination acting as our own support act. Yet to do that in the UK. Perhaps for the future; the logistic of travelling with an Acoustic rig as well as electric will be another travelling challenge. For acoustic at HRH I borrowed Big Boy Bloaters guitar, it was great to play and a big thank you to Big Boy Bloater’s loan of his lovely acoustic guitar. It was a different vibe when I played the guitar showing the power of acoustic.

BD: We all love to hear you get that special sound out of your Strat Old Red and is certainly how you continue to build your fan base. Tell us about strings, pickups and I believe you are retiring the beautiful guitar. How will you find a replacement?

DP: I play with twelve gauge strings, they are considered heavy, but I have always used them. I don’t just use them for the showmanship of the last number. I like the sound they produce. I use standard Fender pickup. For the last number, I turn my amp up to achieve sonic textures, feedback making it as musical as possible.  I always have the amp fairly high, I play loud which is why I have speakers facing the wings and turn them up which can surprise front of house guys.

Old Red not being retired just refining parts of her. Just the neck is being overhauled. The neck has become a liability, 1960’s Fenders used Brazilian Rosewood, this is now a restricted wood and can cause a problem at customs in some countries. In addition, the neck is getting tired and twisted. When I get back home from this tour I’ll be getting a new neck for the guitar.  A face-lift, not retirement.

BD: How do you keep the tracks we love to hear you play the sound is so fresh and vibrant when playing live? It is as if we are hearing the tracks for the first time as you add interest and surprises.

DP: This tour there is a new dynamic with the German musicians. It is though the nature of the music improvising. I may be playing the same song every night on tour, yes the melody, lyrics and chords stay the same but I go in different directions. Not always the way I expect, I grew up playing Jazz music the king of improvisation so every night has its own journey. Can be good or not that is the nature of the beast. It keeps the music exciting for us as musicians and puts a fresh breath into every night’s performance. We are definitely not playing by numbers, traditional blues is steeped in improvisation. I am just keeping that tradition alive and flourishing through my music.

BD: With a hectic touring schedule here, Europe and South Africa what are your plans for 2017 and beyond?

DP: Yes touring is hectic but always great to catch up with friends and fans we make on the tour. This will be the last UK tour focused on Introvertigo. I have dates in South Africa when I return. Then in June we go back in the studio with new songs, new ideas for my next album which will be released Spring 2018. Then back touring South Africa. We are also possibly back in the UK November 2017; where we could be previewing new tracks from the forthcoming album. So watch this space once dates finalized we will be letting the fans know.

BD:  You are back in Cardiff at The Globe, what makes venues fun to return to? Is it building the fan base?

DP: Yes, excited to be playing back in Cardiff. I love the vibe of the venue. Why return to venues, it is a bit of both the venue and the audience is a big part of the show. The Globe is a great little venue, great audience who have such a positive response. I love the sound of the venue, the guitar always sounds good to me on stage which is really satisfying. The Globe is a loud room, lots hard surfaces. It is a venue I will always look forward to playing. The Cardiff crowd are always up for loud music and to enjoy the blues.

BD: Thank you for sharing with your growing group of fans. We have asked you your fantasy band, what you are listening to in previous interviews. So today who would you invite to play with Dan Patlansky band?

DP: Dream scenario would be David Gilmore from Pink Floyd. Gilmore got me into music generally and in particular the guitar.

BD: Thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule and looking forward to seeing you play live in Cardiff on 4th May.

READ what Bluesdoodles said about the TEN Doodle paw album  Introvertigo – We voted the album as the best Overseas album heard over at Bluesdoodles HQ.

Introvertigo with its carefully crafted lyrics that blend urbane wit and honest observation, this is blues pertinent to today’s lifestyles, not so much whisky and women more the corruption of power and social interaction. Ten tracks there are no fillers every number is full of strength and tonal power but there is not an off note or lyric.

MARCH/APRIL UK & EUROPEAN TOUR

Krissy Matthews Live Album and Touring 2017Krissy Matthews Band are set to embark on a UK and European tour in March and April to celebrate the release of their first live album “Live At Freak Valley”.

Released by Proper Records on Friday 14th April 2017, the live album was recorded at the Freak Valley Festival in Siegen, Germany on May 27, 2016. It really catches the adrenaline and pure excitement of the band in all their glory.

“Too many bands release “live records” but half of it is over dubbed in the studio and the f*** ups are erased,” says Matthews. “On Freak Valley you get the real deal. No overdubs.”

Continues Matthews: “I remember our Freak Valley show very well. It was the first show myself, Sam and Max did as a three piece. It was the first time I performed at a major “stoner rock” festival, and it was the first gig of our 2016 summer festival tour. We walked off stage smiling and had a fabulous time. Over the past twelve years of touring since I was 12, more and more fans have been asking me when I was going to release a live album. I knew it had to be around the corner. When I heard the recording of this show, I knew it was the one.”

The three bonus tracks on the album – Hit The Rock, Roadsick Blues and Bubbles And The Seven Phones, were recorded live from a concert Matthews performed at one of his favourite venues – Gerd’s Juke Joint in Joldelund, Germany during Spring 2016.

Originally from Oxford, Krissy’s band has often been described as an exciting, high octane, power rock trio steeped in blues roots. 24 year old Matthews has performed at some of Europe’s most iconic music venues including Ronnie Scott’s, Loreley, Tanzbrunnen and Festa Avante. He’s also opened for many high profile recording artists at the top of their game including Joe Bonamassa, Toto, Gregg Allman and Tedeschi Trucks Band.

http://bit.ly/2dg70UkBluesdoodles reviewed the album  –  The only complaint I have and it is a big one, Open Hands and Enemies is immense for an E.P. but Bluesdoodles wants a full-blown twelve track album so that we can get to know all the intricacies that makes Dan Owen such a marvelous musician. Following on from  their storming European Arena tour with Nickelback and now in the middle of their Billy Talent Arena shows, Canadian Juggernaut rockers MONSTER TRUCK will be returning for a European headline tour calling at the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Spain in March/April 2017.

Rave reviews followed their UK run of the tour dates with Nickelback, Classic Rock proclaimed how they “look good on the big stage”, The Nottingham Post claimed they made a “huge impact”, Planet Mosh screamed that this was “rock n roll played how it should be…completely confident and at home in this big arena”, whilst Louder than War said “it probably won’t be long before they’re headlining arenas themselves.

To go along with the announcement of their tour they have released a brand new stomping psychedelic animated video for ‘For The People’. Talking about the video frontman/bassist Jon Harvey says; ‘”We wanted the video for ‘For The People’ to capture a certain vibe. The song was intended to be a pseudo-protest and very roots rock and the 70’s style animation seemed to speak that. Besides nothing is cooler than hand-drawn animation.”

SINGLE AND ALBUM RELEASE PLANS ANNOUNCED

LIVE SHOWS IN APRIL 2017

Zeal & Ardour With Tour Dates and Album plansThe forthcoming album ‘Devil Is Fine’ – set for release February 24, 2017 –  thematically revolves around more typical black metal fare – rituals, human sacrifice, fire, and blood. Zeal & Ardor take the blaspheme up a notch by delivering the lyrics in the fashion of slave spirituals sung by chain gangs. Black metal from the cotton fields.

Zeal & Ardor is the one-man brainchild of Swiss-American musician Manuel Gagneux. His approach draws on an alternate history and stems from two thoughts: Christianity was imposed upon American slaves (just as it was imposed in Norway) and black metal in the ‘90s grew as a rebellion to monotheism. What would have happened if American slaves had rebelled in the same way? Or put bluntly: what would satanic spirituals sound like?

Zeal & Ardour With Tour Dates and Album plans The double first single, which includes album title track ‘Devil Is Fine’ and ‘Children’s Summon’, is set for release in Europe on November 11.  Pre-orders for the ‘Devil Is Fine’ album, described by Noisey as “one of the year’s most intriguing”, launch the same day.
Having listened to the single’s first side Devil Is Fine, not once, twice or three times it has left me a mixture of excited, intrigued and confused. This is not  Blues  simply revisited and rewritten it has been re-imagined as to what the voices of slaves would sound like today.  The sound is a mash-up as the essence of blues meets metal and gospel colliding with electronica. The beat is pagan, the chains clang with painful memories and the  music is totally dark and modern as the holler of the chain gang rings loud and clear. The pain is deep with the vocals full of open pain and anguish. This is a loud message that will gain attention across the genres of music.  The genre is mixed and has been garnering attention online since April 2016 belongs to Zeal & Ardor.
Gagneux comments, “Devil Is Fine was not created thinking that this many would ever hear it. There is no stylistic compromise or pandering on it. Only things I personally like.”

Zeal & Ardor intend to bring the live experience to Europe in Spring 2017. When asked earlier this year by toiletovhell  about performing live, Gagneux commented, “I’d really like it to be somewhere between a concert and a seriously f*cked up play. Not just something people haven’t heard before, but something people have never seen before, leaving them frightened, weak, and loving it. That is the thing I’m currently striving for.” The following dates are now on sale:

Rising star Dan Owen has announced his brand new single ‘Moonlight’, celebrating the release of his latest EP Open Hands and Enemies out today through LAB Records.

The single premiered with The Independent who said, “Shrewsbury-born singer-songwriter Dan Owen is one to watch… Owen has a voice quite beyond his years, is a versatile guitarist, and judging by his opening performance for Birdy at the Eventim Apollo he’s an electrifying live act as well.”

‘Moonlight’ is a distinctly intimate insight into Dan’s stunning songwriting and jaw-dropping vocal abilities. It’s one of the most touching moments on the Open Hands and Enemies EP, a haunting love ballad that finds Dan at his most effortlessly smooth.
