Enjoy Jeff Beck Live Hollywood Bowl At Home

Enjoy Jeff Beck Live Hollywood Bowl At HomeThanks to the release of a DVD and Album we can Enjoy Jeff Beck Live Hollywood Bowl At Home. For the majority of fans sitting in the Hollywood Bowl on the 10th August 2016 was just a dream. Now it can be a virtual experience thanks to the release of DVD, CDs and Blueray.  First I watched the DVD, the energy of the show is captured, the feeling of live music permeated through the speakers. Jeff Beck is in absolute control from the first note, his band is in stunning form as The Revolution Will Be Televised is announced by Rosie Bones. We are off to a show-stopping guitar fest no one speaks or move I am in the Beck Zone. The same feeling is on the double CD.  The recording of the live show has kept the warm fluid tones of a live performance and the night just gets better and better no wonder the audience is so enthusiastic.

The collection of tracks reflecting the half century of his incredible contribution to modern music. This is a party with true style as the eight-time Grammy award winner fills his golden moment with a phalanx of special guests. The guests add but never detract from Beck’s glittering virtuoso guitar performance. How far has the road been since Jeff Beck stood on the stage as a tourist to performing to a packed house of fans who hung on every note played and string bending moment. This would not have been a Jeff Beck celebratory party without Jan Hammer on keys bring the textured wonder that shapes Prog-Rock. Freeway Jam is the first but not the last time we hear Jan’s fingers dancing across the keyboards.

Early on in his career as a member of The Yardbirds Jimmy Hall takes on the lead vocals on Over Under Sideways and For Your love. Tonight we journey through his career dipping into an array of albums Truth his debut album through to the 2016 Loud Hailer album.  The albums are crammed full of one highlight after another the guests all adding pizzazz as Buddy Guy, Billy Gibbons, Steven Tyler and Beth Hart all help create the celebratory mood. But the crowning glory on every track is the magical guitar sound from the maestro himself Jeff Beck. There is no need to be a guitar expert, or understand the technicalities of strings, pickups and pedals to sit back and listen in awe to the range and complexity of chords and riffs that flow with incendiary precision from the flying fingers across the six-strings.

To pick out a few of the tracks just doesn’t do justice to the album celebrating the depth and breadth of Beck’s long and illustrious career to-date. With Beck’s Bolero creating a pictorial landscape visualized through the sound and shape of Beck’s guitar, followed by a twin helping of glorious Beck, instrumental Rice Pudding always a live favourite morphing into Morning Dew with Jimmy Hall replacing Rod Stewart on vocals what a classic duo of tunes to showcase contemporary rock. We have to have a jam with the energy on the stage as Beck’s voice once again praises the great Jan Hammer on keys as we zoom down the Freeway. The keyboards create a sound that towers above the instrumentation then in reply Beck’s guitar sweet, controlled and determined that the keys will not win this road race.

The blues classic is given a Hart/Beck rendition as I’d Rather Go Blind is heard across the Hollywood Bowl as Beth relinquished the microphone Buddy Guy picks up the challenge to play with Jeff Beck. As Let Me Love You fills the auditorium and the guitars emit some mighty licks. Then Beck plays Rough Boy with Billy Gibbons, replaying the ZZ Top 2016 hit. Now with Steve Tyler as vocalist, the party is rocking and the show is heading to a close with the 1968 Yardbirds, Train Kept A-Rollin followed by Shape of Things. Who what a night of music live in your sitting room.

How to top that for an encore? Firstly, let the guitar do the talking with a glorious instrumental version of A Day In The Life from Beatles Sgt. Pepper Album. Then invite everyone back on stage and a tribute to the late Purple majesty, Prince with Purple Rain that left everyone listening stirred, shaken and over-awed by the wonderfully emotional performance leaving you astounded by the wonders of contemporary rock.

Joe Bonamassa Live at Carnegie Hall Acoustic Album

Joe Bonamassa Live at Carnegie Hall Acoustic Album

Joe Bonamassa Live at Carnegie Hall Acoustic Album

I can hear the cries – no another Joe Bonamassa album not another live album! Yes, we know he has played live at so many prestigious concert halls and venues. Yes, we know he played Carnegie Hall and that is rather special, but really why would we want Joe Bonamassa Live at Carnegie Hall Acoustic Album?

  1. We probably could not afford to go even if we lived in New York
  2. How many versions of his blues does any record collection need, he has released over the last fifteen years twenty-two albums.

This review, I promise you will tell you why Bluesdoodles believes sincerely why Joe Bonamassa Live At Carnegie Hall Album to add to your personal blues discography.

Joe Bonamassa Live at Carnegie Hall is different an acoustic evening with a massive impact. This is not Joe Bonamassa on a stage trying to replicate, mimic an old-time blues player on a porch deep in the delta. Bonamassa has surrounded himself with an all-star and diverse ensemble of world-class musicians. From China, cellist & erhuist Tina Guo; from Egypt percussionist Hoosam Ramzy; multi-instrumentalist Eric Brazilian, saxophone, Hurdy Gurdy and more; along with regulars on Piano Reese Wynans & Drummer Anton Fig and a trio of Australian backing vocalists. This is acoustic with attitude conjuring deep sounds from the musical arsenal of the world, adding layers of complexity to the acoustic fueled textures and tones. The twelve tracks include favourites and new tracks ensuring the live performance is fresh and alive with sparkling blue tones.

Every track has a special moment and will single out a few. BUT; more important for Bluesdoodles was the collective, message, energy and the vibrancy of music that shimmer and shines as the blues is augmented with roots tones from across the world.  Joe Bonamassa said “Despite being among the most ambitious things I’ve done – I played with a 9 piece acoustic band – It came out great. It was a typical Joe freak show.”

The scope is huge and the ambition all-encompassing achieving an album with a deep acoustic feel. It feels personal, intimate as acoustic should despite being recorded in the large Carnegie Hall with the guitar surrounded by a 9 piece band.

Opening with a seriously classic piano intro a whoop and JB joins the duet as the intro shapes the ambiance of the album then with a 1,2,3,4 we hit the beat we know with the opening track revamped from Blues of Desperation, This Train and our introduction to Tina Guo’s Erhu a Chinese two-string bowed musical instrument. With this track the album is gaining a head of steam as we realise that a relaxed Joe B on vocals is having fun. With the opening tracks from the same album we are on familiar territory but the foundations have shifted with new sounds and arrangements. Going back to his ninth album we have the title track Dust Bowl re-worked that gives the strong lyrics more depth and the backing vocals add emotional punctuation.   Driving Towards Daylight is a beautiful piece of musical artistry closing with haunting strings and then as the applause dies the guitar picking up the raw notes of the delta harsh, quiet thoughtful as Black Lung Heartache is added to the set list.  The guitar joined with a swirl of strings, the Hurdy Gurdy connecting the coalfields of USA from Appalachians across to South Wales, into Europe and across to China wherever men hew coal from the deep dark earth. This power source bringing light and heat to our homes at a personal cost Black Lung .The mood changes like a sky at sunset, vivid, muted bright and darker. Closing out disc one with Livin’ Easy returning to Blues of Desperation with saxophone and piano bringing in a jazz fueled vibe and the languorous beat suits the lyrics. Then Get Back My Tomorrow up beat, the backing vocals add so much tone I like the lyric ‘I wanted more….’ It is okay there is more another six tracks on the second disc.

Opening with Mountain Time given a country treatment leading in to the cover and longest song title on the album from 1929, Blind Alfred Rees; How Can Poor People Stand Such Times and Live? The guitar takes the lead with piano and this is country blues as Joe implores the lyrics with emotional tones a heartfelt holler.  Then as a juxtaposition a reworking of Black Country Communion’s Song Of Yesterday. With a tender love song Hummingbird is bought alive in this format tonight in Carnegie Hall, then The Rose gentle musically fragrant with strings and percussion pulling the melody and Joe’s vocals strong and true full of tenderness as the acoustic notes fall silent.

Acoustic can be modern, exciting challenging and above all else acoustic can be experimental as he proves on Joe Bonamassa Live at Carnegie Hall Acoustic album.

So back to the original query why have another Live Joe Bonamassa album?

  • Will this collection of musicians ever be repeated?, I doubt it; 9 musicians bought together by love of live music gathered to deliver blues rooted in the world’s musical diversity, history and heritage.
  • Joe Bonamassa Live at Carnegie Hall belongs in a personal collection not as a trophy but able to be played in your own space capturing the mood when he played for two nights in New York.

The album, where nothing is overdone, acoustic authenticity maintained, Joe’s vocals the best I have heard. No theatrics,  music and the power of lyrics telling the story in perfect harmony.

Michael Schenker Live In Tokyo CD Rocks Your Socks Off

Live music adds a sense of occasion, the frisson of anticipation runs through you as you await the band to strike the first note. The next best thing is a live album, Michael Schenker on Fest – Live Tokyo International Forum Hall A, here he nails it. Close your eye turn the speakers up loud and you are in the concert hall with the band. Fest – Live Tokyo is a rock concert with an overture, three movements with interludes and the finale pulling the whole show together. This gives the body of work from Michael Schenker a structure, definition and purpose that engages and keeps the audience in the hall or listening to the double CD or DVD engaged with the music.

The overture is a double instrumental helping Searching for Freedom & Into The Arena. The stage is set as with any overture.  Searching For Freedom; the applause, then you can almost hear the collective holding of breath as the first notes of his virtuoso guitar playing fall like musical diamonds from the speaker.  The opening two instrumentals are a personification of rock majesty the instruments collective takes you on a journey looking for the freedom and Into The Arena we are now at the heart of the crowd intently listening to the band featuring drummer Ted McKenna and bassist Chris Glenn pounding out the driving deep rock rhythm and Steve Mann on keys adding tonal textures and interest counter-balancing Schenker’s guitar the glorious centrepiece of the CD & DVD.

With three vocalists in this eighteen track set, Gary Barden, Graham Bonnet and Robin McAuley it is not long before the vocalists join as an extra layer with words and the human musical instrument the voice.

The first movement consists of five tracks featuring vocalist Gary Barden. Starting with Attack of The Mad Axeman. Gary was the vocalist on Michael Schenker Group debut album released August 1980 entering the top five UK album chart. With UK single chart conquered by Armed and Ready, the obvious track to close out this section.  This is a band in their element, they are hitting the highs pulling out every moment of the music. Production is superb the band is tight around the flaming guitar comet that is Michael Schenker, in his natural element playing live music on a Marshall stacked stage. Gary’s vocals have deepened connecting with the lyrics as he sends out a heartfelt cry For The Nations. This is a vocalist that is back in town singing rock with the band that he feels is right for him.

A pause as Coast To Coast resets the mood before the mighty Graham Bonnet picks up the microphone for a trio of numbers in the second vocal movement of the night. Yes, the first track is Assault Attack forever associated with the power of the partnership of Schenker & Bonnet.  The music is fast the rock is frantic and we feel the heat of the live event being turned up another notch. The DVD shows Michael & Gary smiling at each other once again, the joy of playing rock is paramount as the clock is turned back.

Captain Nemo the interlude as the microphone baton is passed to Robin McAuley for a quintet of numbers.  Change of vocalist, change of feel as the melodic movement cascades from the speaker as we hear This Is My Heart live. No one will have a broken heart listening to the outpouring of rock classics. The vocal muscles are warm full of emotional contours as they curl around the guitar and conquer Love Is Not A Game. Nor, is producing live rock of this glittering quality.

All too soon, the finale is here the mighty Doctor Doctor with all three vocalists joining the howling guitar majesty of Michael Schenker.  Live music is magical, this s a recorded live album that pulls no punches you truly feel that you are there in the presences of musicians who love and understand the power of rock. One thing I am certain of there will not be a better live album produced in 2017. Michael Schenker Live In Tokyo Rocks your socks off.

RELEASED FRIDAY 24th MARCH 2017

Says Schenker, “It’s a miracle that after all these years, something like this took place with the original band members of “M.S.G.”. Being able to go back to those days and celebrate the music is an exciting experience for us, as well as for old and new fans. To being able to re-experience, and for the new audience to get a feel of what it was like, is incredibly enjoyable.”

Continues Schenker, “It’s an amazing feeling to have all of my M.S.G. Family from the ’80’s performing together and especially with Graham Bonnet, who I never got to play any concerts after our Assault Attack album that was originally released in 1982. Fortunately, being able to have the participation of original M.S.G. members such as Gary Barden, Chris Glen (bass) and Ted McKenna (drums) being part of it, and somehow, to perform with Robin McAuley and Steve Mann (guitar, keyboards) again as well, is pretty awesome.”

MICHAEL SCHENKER - LIVE TOKYO OUT March 2017

An Evening With Todd Rundgren – Live At The Ridgefield

An Evening With Todd Rundgren – Live At The RidgefieldAn Evening With Todd Rundgren – Live At The Ridgefield

Live At The Ridgefield, the first thing  you notice on this fourth live album from Todd is the cinematography is not the quality expected from a live professional shot DVD. BUT the most important part, the sound is excellent and captures the energy, enthusiasm that is Todd Rundgren. The appeal of the DVD is also the under production, this is who I am Todd Rundgren while he moves from Rock to Soul, it is his eclectic take on music the fans love the individuality, energy and connection with the audience. The show they chose to film was December 2015 at The Richfield Playhouse in Connecticut.

With a back catalogue that spans the decades from the1960’s up to now, as Todd adroitly says the evening is not long enough to fit the set list in. The set reflects the journey Todd has taken with his guitar and vocals and the set list moves from one song to another including his early days with The Nazz. The fans will love the choice yes, some favourites will not be there but he has ensured fans from all and any era will have the sound they love. From funky through to rock.
Picking out highlights as Todd puts down the guitar and funky drives the theatre, Love Science with some smart footwork as the band takes over. Following from funk Buffalo Grass a complete contrast with its luscious harmonies and a guitar that sings. The twenty-five tracks show the scope and range that Todd has delivered, melodic soulful ballads through to lead breaks that are understated letting the guitar strings do the talking. He has performed live songs not heard for decades and if you love music from both rock and soul genres this DVD/CD has it all delivered with verve and an intent to entertain with quality music.
As ever, the DVD has those extra nuggets that no CD or vinyl will ever have, this is no exception with band members interviewing each other.
The DVD/CD combo, An Evening With Todd Rundgren – Live At The Ridgefield is one for the fans, this is a Todd Rundgren trip down memory lane. Every fan will remember the first time they saw Todd live, heard the number played creating a visual and aural treat to revisit the music that defines Todd Rundgren and the band.

Opening the twelve track album with Lose Control, which is a certainty with King King’s music; this is a jump up and down number that will raise the temperature at any venue. Glasgow is on fine form as Alan thanks the audience before launching into a Fabulous Thunderbirds number that is always sublime when it receives the King King treatment Wait On Time is no different tonight. The guitar from Alan weeps and pulls at the rock n roll vibe that Wayne picks up with a clash of the cymbal as the guitar beguiles you and pulls you in to a Nimmo musical hug.

Three Blues Kings Saluted by Joe Bonamassa

Three Blues Kings Saluted by Joe Bonamassa

Three Blues Kings Saluted
by  Joe Bonamassa

Another month and another Joe Bonamassa album. Now you have Live At The Greek Theatre an evening of tribute to the Three Kings to add to your collection. Unleashed tonight as Bonamassa captured those signature licks and lead breaks. This is a blues masterclass for a guitarist that understands the very DNA of electric blues combined with a phalanx of musicians adding layer upon layer of luscious sound.

Accompanying Joe on this sumptuous mix of DVD and CDs are Anton Fig on drums and adding to the rhythm groove bassist Michael Rhodes. The next layer added to the sound is the magical blues guitar of Kirk Fletcher and the sound of chords from the keys by the sensational Reese Wynans. Joe Bonamassa want’s a deep, expansive sound so now we have soul in the shape of the horn section Lee Thornburg’s trumpet , trombone from Nick Lan and the final piece of the horn jigsaw saxophonist Paulie Cerra. Let’s add some texture to the vocals with backing singers Mahalla Barnes, Jade McRae & Juanita who bring gospel into the mix.

You could say something about every one of the 22 tracks as Joe matches the guitar and instrumentation mix to augment the sound of the Blues Kings.  Joe Bonamassa’s presence grows as he picks up the guitar and connects to the blues. Electric blues full of Joe B’s passion for the sound he personifies he is living and breathing the sound and vibe.

Highlights are many in fact the whole concert is a masterpiece in how to give the old masters of the blues new life.  Early on I groaned – not Freddie’s King Going Dow again, there are too many interpretations already. I had to eat my thoughts this was Freddie Electric! Reese Wynans keys just sparkled through the licks and riffs. The flying V got into the blues with  Albert King’s I Get Evil, that evil feel was caught by the horns and flying fingers of Reese.  Jim Reeves’ Ole Time Religion, part of BB King’s sings spiritual the backing singers open and add to the fervent blues vibe along with Joe’s vocals and one of the three Gibson ES’s used during the live concert. Into this tantalising mix of the greats of early electric blues we have Oh Pretty Woman, and Cadillac Assembly Line just to whet your appetite for a fitting emotional rendition of the works of Albert, Freddie and BB’s the Three Kings by Joe Bonamassa.

Throughout the DVD the guitar from Kirk Fletcher adds to the emotionally charged performance adding rhythm guitar licks and lead breaks that are mouth-watering.  Closing with riding with the Thrill Has Gone, one thing is for certain the thrill of Joe Bonamassa’s guitar is not going to be diminished anytime soon!

Covers, yes JB is paying tribute to the Kings BUT! Where is his own music infusing the musical memory of this iconic Theatre, where he has dreamt of playing so long. I am sure The Greek Theatre would have welcomed the originality of his own material linking the delicious delivery of blues classics with verve and style!

Added to the concert of nearly two hours you also get the chance to see and hear bonus material including a conversation with Joe’s parents and behind the scenes.

AS he continues a celebration of Blues Heritage, beginning in 2014 as he visited Red Rocks in tribute to Muddy Waters & Howlin Wolf Both tours contribution a portion of proceeds to presenting partner Keeping The Blues Alive Foundation

Once again a polished live performance, not and this is a keeper for fans of Joe Bonamassa especially if a trip to the Greek Theatre, Los Angeles was impossible. Once again Joe Bonamassa visits an iconic theatre and captures it soul with his superlative blues guitar playing Joe Bonamassa is electric!

Michael Schenker Enters the Temple of Rock Live In Madrid

Michael Schenker Enter the Temple of Rock Live In Madrid

Michael Schenker Enters the Temple of Rock
Live In Madrid

A true reflection of the modern age of attending a live concert with a sea of mobile phones held aloft, as the crowd anticipates with growing applause, drummer, keys, and the with a salute Michael Schenker arrives with his Flying V.

Michael Schenker Enters the Temple of Rock Live In MadridOpening with UFO Doctor, Doctor Michael touches hands with his phalanx of fans as he announces it is Rock n’ Roll time and with a few notes played the atmosphere is electric.  The vocalist, ex Rainbow front man Doogie White  sung on though the audience themselves were happy to take on the singing duties as Michael’s fingers flew up and down the strings, everything was immaculate, precise and augmented by the Bassist Francis Buchholz and rhythm guitarist  Wayne Findlay all in harmony coming to the front. So Why Oh! Why? did Michael have the strings of his guitar untrimmed looking an irritating visual distraction? To be honest, nothing really deflected from the honest rocking sound from Michael Schenker’s Temple of Rock. This is rock that refuses to make the sound over complicated it is Rock n’ Roll that hits the beat and entertains. The vocals had the clarity and depth to tower above the band as Lights Out is picked up. The rhythm section are superb this is the granite rock of the band with ex-Scorpions Bassist  Francis Buchholz and drummer Herman Rarebell giving a deep secure and stable foundation for Michael’s guitar antics. Lights may be out in London but definitely not in Madrid for this UFO classic.

Michael Schenker Enters the Temple of Rock Live In MadridMichael’s guitars change but the rock stays focused, granite hard with sparkles of keys and resplendent guitar chords. Schenker’s eyes stare out with steely intent into the crowd as his fingers dance up and down the fret board. Everyone just standing in amazement and pure enjoyment as rock hit’s the bullseye. Madrid loved their moment in the spotlight when they were told to go crazy and see themselves in 4K, the chanting was definitely more football that rock n’ roll but certainly raised the temperature of the show.   A song dedicated tonight to those that died in Paris the week before as    Michael, Francis and Wayne Findley  swayed in unison a dance of  guitars the vocals kick in then straight into Victim of Illusion from Micheal Schenker Group. Whatever the power, skills and antics of the band all eyes and focus are on the smiling rocking colossus that is Michael Schenker.  Then we have a Scorpion pairing, Lovedrive with its vocals and the hefty rock instrumental Coast To Coast. The live atmosphere is building as the Temple of Rock delve into the back catalogue, UFO, Scorpions and the last three Temple of Rocks albums. This is a real opportunity to sit back and enjoy the entertaining rock driven antics of an axe-man who wields his guitar of choice with focused intent.

The double necked monster guitar, his new flying M, with two necks tuned differently was definitely not Too Hot To handle in the skillful hands of Schenker.

There is no argument that across the twenty-two tracks and the use of four Schenker guitars this hits the rock spot-on live and a little bit dangerous. The DVD recorded live at the Joy Eslava Concert Hall in Madrid on the 19th November illustrates that Michael Schenker’s Temple of Rock is on a mission. Recorded less than a week after the Paris atrocities with the bombing of Bataclan it is not surprising they are in the thoughts of crowd and musicians alike as a tribute is paid.

If you can’t get to a live Michael Schenker’s Temple of Rock gig or need a Schenker fix between live shows then this DVD fits the bill. It has everything of a live show and extras the drama of the moment is captured you just miss out on the heat and the electricity between the crowds and the artist on the stage.

A taster of what to expect on the main event a superbly produced DVD

CD Review: Neal Morse Testimony and One Live

Scan0003Neal Morse
Testimony and One Live
Morsefest 2014
Radiant Records

Released on 2 Blu-Ray or Special Edition 2 DVD/4CD Set

This is a musical equivalent of a T.V. series Box set; the advantage is you can dip in and out across the four albums and the music still has a form and a narrative or you can sit back, feet up a glass of your favourite tipple and let the two nights of concerts flow from your speakers for just over five hours.

The long-time rhythm collaborators drummer Mike Portnoy and bassist Randy George plus the anchors of the musical pictures being painted are the Neal Morse Band, the keyboard delights from Bill Hubauer and Eric Gillette’s guitar magic joining Neal Morse.  In then the addition of layers of sounds that fill out the textures and add a velvety lushness of sound from 4 piece horn section, 6 member female background vocal, strings and full orchestral percussion the sound is progressive and full of enchanting moments some loud whilst others take on a more subtle hue.

Across the four CDs is a Prog-Rock show for everyone to enjoy with the added bonus of DVDs to see the full stage show spectacular. This is music that is full of melodies and hooks of choruses that catch the ear and then the complexity of different instruments meeting through clever arrangements so that the show is a celebration of everything that is Prog-Rock as the tempos ebb and flow, the level rises and falls and the cadences of the guitars squeal as the six-strings take centre stage.

Neal Morse’s career whether in bands including Transatlantic and Spock’s Beard or as a solo artist this is an undertaking that takes the confidence of being a respected musician and the faith that bringing a project of this size to stage will deliver the music that has a purpose and entertains – this has been achieved whether you listen to the whole or parts of the collection the music paints for you pictures in the music mind.

Yes, in this length of music there are moments of self-indulgence but that can be overlooked as the sum of the whole is progressive rock that pours from keys, strings and the percussive nerve will hold the structure together it is a roller-coaster ride of delight. The vocals when used are another musical instrument as the harmonies flow around the words and then the guitar picks up the lead from the voice. This is a journey of Neal Morse’s life and challenges having left the band Spock’s Beard and finding Christianity. This is a true Prog-Rock concept journey that finds you taken on a road trip that allows you to explore the emotions, changes and challenges we all meet on the road.

This is for the collection of all lovers of Prog Rock and his ever growing fan base who must be delighted and at times it is like playing Name That Tune as there are snippets of tunes we all recall. The energy of live music is live and well on Morsefest 2014.
